Stephanie
Cassius had been out for two hours.
Ethan and Mason were hardly gentle with his human body as they carried him up the stairs, banging his head against the wall at least twice before finally managing to get him into my bed.
He seemed so foreign there.
So beautiful.
Dark and light mixed in one. Swirls of blue spread throughout his wrist and pushed against his fingertips as little icicles attached themselves to my bedspread. The Angel blood was leaving him.
I kind of hated it.
As a Dark One, I knew what to expect from him, complete indifference or on rare occasions pity, where heâd let me spend time in his arms for a brief second, only to push me away hours later in shame.
I swallowed my pride and moved to stand by the bed. Heâd said not to touch him⦠but the temptation was too strong.
Ethan, Mason, and Alex were too busy going all medieval on Johnâs ass, stuffing him in a dungeon I didnât even know existed until Alex skipped toward the kitchen pantry, pressed a button and gleefully clapped his hands chanting. âDungeon, Dungeon, Dungeon.â
Clearly my brother needed a hobby if this was the highlight of his week, which he repeated over and over again while he carried the body downstairs, and then again as he attached the metal chains.
Iâd nearly puked when I saw a rat.
Working out of fear, I froze it and then nearly burst into tears while Mason groaned out, âWe used to eat those in the old days.â
âIt amazes me you even remember eating meat,â Alex pointed out. âDonât pinecones give you stomach troubles? How does one even process that?â
âMagic,â Mason barked. âIâm magic.â
âI had a girl tell me that once in bedâ¦â Alex smirked off into the distance as if recalling the memory.
âRocked her world twice for the compliment then sadly had to wipe her memory so she wouldnât commit suicide after discovering no man would ever compare.â
âAs much as I love hearing you bicker like women,â Ethan said, his dark hair falling around his chin, âIâd really love to get back to my wife. Mason, secure the last chain, and Alex find a mirror.â
Alex flipped him off.
While I stared in horror. Is that really what our lives have come to? Chaining someone to a wall?
âYouâre young.â Ethan was at my side instantly, his grip on my wrist was painful, but I think he meant it to be, to gain my attention.
âYou donât know how we used to do things because you never had to see the ugly⦠weâve lived through so many wars, so much death, plague, destruction. Believe me when I say, this is Disneyland.â
Alex moaned. âI would give at least six sexual favors for a turkey leg right now. After all those Disney movies Genesis made us watch, I looked it up online.â His blue eyes widened. âTons of turkey legs.â
âJust a guess.â Mason shoved past Alex and adjusted the metal casings around Johnâs legs. âBut sex for turkey legs is probably frowned upon by King Disney.â
âKing Lion!â Ethan grumbled. âDisney is no King. Heâs a man.â
âGenesis says so,â Mason argued as if it was complete truth. That was just the type of relationship they had, and frankly I was getting a dizzying headache from all their arguing, not to mention I kept hearing screaming.
It was faint.
But it was there.
Gulping, Iâd gone back upstairs to take a nap.
Only to find a giant of a man in my bed.
A perfect man.
The perfect blend of good and bad.
His lips twitched as he kicked his legs and then stilled again.
Just one touch. I promised myself before my fingertips grazed his strong jaw.
~âEva!â Cassiusâs voice was thick with emotion as he held nothing but dust in his hands. Like diamonds, the glittery dust spread in a perfect circle around his body, his head was hung, his shoulders tense.~
~Sariel was standing behind him, looking just as menacing as ever. Then he disappeared, leaving Cassius alone.~
~Iâd never seen a Dark One cry, didnât know they were capable of it. Ever since my change Iâd had trouble even conjuring up watery eyes. Although I felt sadness, I couldnât express it.~
~Cassius was wrapped in a red type of toga, a sword was laid at his side, he slowly pulled the sword from its silver casing and held it out in front of him.~
~âDonât.â Ethan appeared in front of Cassius. âPut the sword down, brother.â~
~âSheâs gone,â Cassius whispered. âI have nothing left.â~
~âYou have Alex.â Ethan joked. âHeâs like a two-year-old. He needs guidance, you know how new he is.â~
~Cassius continued to stare at the long sword. âI want to forget the pain.â~
~âYouâll go dark if you do, Cassius. You know this. Forgetting emotions isnât human.â~
~âI am no human!â Cassius spat. âIâm an Angel!â~
~He stood to his full height, his body shimmering with iridescent whites and purples as he called upon his Angel blood, pushing the humanity so far away that my eyes hurt to look at him. Snow fell in the spot over his head. âI am to be worshipped!â~
~âBrotherâ¦â Ethanâs voice was still calm. âYou are fallen.â~
~As if a reminder of what he would never be, wings appeared at Cassiusâ sides, but they were completely black.~
~Dripping with blood.~
~As the storm increased what was once bright turned so dark I stumbled backward.~
~His eyes went black, his teeth elongated into fangs, and his body grew another foot.~
~âEvil and good always did have a problem co-existing,â Ethan said in a bored tone.~
~âCome back, brotherâ¦. killing yourself is not the answer, for you will lose your soul and turn into your greatest nightmare, meaning one of us will eventually have to kill you, and Iâve hunted enough friends, donât make me hunt my family.â~
~Cassius fell to his knees as the diamonds of dust burst into the air. He lifted his hand and caught a few particles and pressed them to his heart. âSo I never forget the pain of remembering.â~
~âPainâ¦â Ethan answered just as Mason appeared, sword raised. ââ¦isnât reserved for mere humans, but for everything in creation. It would not be fair that we never experience it.â~
~âI donât want to feel.â Cassius stood, sheathing his sword and facing both men. âI refuse it.â~
~Mason looked uncertain at what to say, but Ethan nodded. âOne day, you will regret that choice. And I do hope Iâm still alive to see it.â~
~The vision shattered in front of me into a million shards of glass. I gasped as I was transported to last year.~
~Genesis had just been brought to one of the immortal parties.~
~I hung on Cassius like a whore.~
~Ashamed, I looked away.~
~Minutes passed, maybe an hour.~
~And I was across the room, talking to a few friends. Cassius stared, his mouth ajar and then flexed like he was both in awe and irritated.~
~âHappened faster than you would have liked, Iâm sure, even though itâs been what? A few thousand years?â~
~âGo to hell,â Cassius muttered.~
~âInteresting choice, however.â Mason crossed his burly arms and chuckled. âI wonder what the council would think.â~
~âThe council needs to mind their own damn business.â~
~âShe is beautiful.â~
~âSheâs mine!â Cassius roared, slamming Mason into the nearest wall.~
~Mason brushed him off, smirking like heâd just won the lottery. âIs she? I havenât seen your mark.â~
~Cassius recoiled. âI would only mark my true love and even then, we cannot be.â~
~âBut if you could?â Mason asked.~
~Cassius didnât answer. He simply watched me, and when my friends disappeared, he held out his hand and whispered, âMay I have this dance?â~
~I shivered, remembering the way heâd touched me that night, so different than other nights, like he wanted me as a woman.~
~Saw me as his equal.~
~We danced for hours, and when it was time to leave, he tugged me against him and whispered against my mouth, âCome with me.â~
~âIs that allowed?â I teased back.~
~âI make the rules.â He tugged my body against his, he was so big⦠everywhere, that it was overwhelming to all my senses. Even then Iâd been powerless, so powerless.~
~âGood.â He chuckled wickedly. âYou can try to fight me⦠but youâll give in⦠in the end, they always do.â~
~The thought that heâd been with others pissed me off. I pushed him off and spat. âDonât you have a human to chase?â~
~âWhy chase a human? When Iâve tasted you?â~
~âWhy taste me when you can have her?â I countered.~
~His mouth snapped shut.~
~Fresh pain washed over me as the vision shattered again.~
And I was back in my room.
And Cassiusâwas awake.
âWhat did I tell you?â He tried to get up, but was still too weak. After three tries he lay back down and cursed.
âYou cannot simply invade my thoughts while I sleep. It isnât fair.â I invaded his sleep? âAnd before you try again, remember you can only do it once within a REM cycle, and Iâm very much awake thanks to your erotic musings.â
âErotic musings?â I repeated, crossing my arms. âI wasnât the one going all Viking or caveman!â
Cassius frowned. âI am neither of those things and I donât appreciate being called a Neanderthal.â
âItâs a figure of speech! You know, cavemen, who pulled women by the hair and had sex with them.â
Cassiusâs face blanched, and he looked absolutely appalled. âIâll have you know my favorite human was a man who lived in a cave!â
âOf course! Because youâre older than dirt!â
âAnother untruth!â Cassius fired back. âDirt has been around for at least a millennium longer than I!â
I groaned. âYouâre giving me a headache.â
âItâs the Angel blood, not me,â he sniffed the air. âDamn it, I cannot smell anymore, at least not how I could before. Youâre too new to dream walk. Iâd suggest against it, but youâre like a child with a new toy.â
âAm not.â
âAre too!â he argued.
I burst out laughing. âNow whoâs acting immature?â
He glared. âStill you.â
Sighing, I sat down on the bed. âIâm sorry forâ¦â I waved my hand over him. âThat.â
He looked down. âOh, a simple chemical reaction to your kiss.â
âHuh?â I looked where he was looking and then nearly burst into flames. âUmâ¦.â
He was still staring. âThough itâs quite large? Is that normal for a human?â
Still blushing, I looked away. âHow would I know?â
âYouâre a woman.â
âSo?â
âSo youâve lain with human men.â
My eyebrows nearly met the sky. âExcuse me?â
âSiren.â Cassius seemed confused. âIt was your glamour. Therefore, you practiced seduction, mainly of humans, did you not?â
âNot! Most definitely not!â I yelled. âI never⦠slept with them!â
âSilly, who sleeps? You fornicate.â
âPlease donât say fornicate. In my bed.â
âWould you rather I stand and say it?â
âWhy? Are you so ancient that simple manners during conversation escape you?â
âSorry⦠You fornicate in bed⦠please?â He looked even more confused.
Alexâs laughter from down the hall didnât help. âSirens love manners in bed!â
âShut up!â I yelled slamming the door in his face and glaring back at Cassius. âLook, maybe we should talk about what I saw, and then you can start my training.â
Cassius clenched his jaw. âYou saw a memory, nothing more.â
âButââ
âAnd your trainingâ¦â He heaved himself out of the bed and stood on wobbly feet. ââ¦begins as soon as Mason cooks meat.â
I rolled my eyes. âFine, we feed you again and then lesson time?â
âYes.â Cassius leaned toward me and whispered, âWhy do you smell so good?â His eyes dilated as he reached out to touch my skin.
âIâm a Dark One. I think thatâs part of the attraction, right?â
âRight.â He stumbled over his words. âYes, thatâs it, of course. We should⦠eat.â
