I should be exhausted. Instead, it felt like someone had just zapped me with adrenaline.
It was an odd sort of balance, to experience a beautiful moment with Cassius only to have it dampened by the darkness that being mated to him had unlocked.
It crept.
Like a slow choking blanketâ it tempted, told me that if Iâd just give in to the evil side of myself, Iâd be complete.
And then, Cassius would smile in my direction and bring me back.
How long had he been trying to exist like this? Constantly battling the innermost darkest parts of himself? Alone?
âA very long time,â he answered. âEva helped.â
âI would have liked her, I think.â I led Cassius back to the bed, we both lay down and stared at one another.
âShe was strong.â Cassius touched his fingers to my face. âLike you.â
I kissed his fingertips.
The door burst open.
Ethan stood there with Mason on one side, Alex on the other, and Genesis in the back trying to peek over their shoulders.
âThe hell?â Ethan roared. âWhat did you guys do to my house?â
For the first time since weâd lain down, I glanced around the darkened room.
All of the lights were completely shattered. The walls were lined with ice, the window was completely frosted over, and the walls had cracks running up and down them as if an earthquake had occurred.
âWe, um, had aâ¦â I elbowed Cassius. âFight.â
âIs he dead?â Mason wondered aloud. âWhat I mean to say is, did he survive this⦠er, ordeal?â
âYes, did the King last his first bout of lovemaking or shall I call the time of death?â Alex joked.
Cassius swore under his breath then in an instant rose to his scary full seven-foot height and glared down at them.
Ethan and Mason took a cautious step back while Alex stood there with a stupid grin on his face. âSo, sex heals all, hmm?â
âI made myself a promise Alex, care to know what it was?â
âSex before youâre old as hell anatomy falls off?â he guessed.
Cassiusâs grin widened. âI think Iâll enjoy this.â With a wave of his hand Alexâs voice was gone.
âFrozen voice box⦠it may take a few hours to thaw, if it ever does.â
Alexâs eyes widened.
âBut all Sirens have are their voices and good looks!â Genesis argued from her spot in the hall.
Cassiusâs eyes softened. âPerhaps heâll learn to choose his words more wisely in the future then.â
Alex stomped out of the room, while Cassius faced everyone. âIt seems that I am⦠restored.â
âHow?â Ethanâs eyes narrowed. âSariel took pity on your weakness?â
âMore likeââ Cassius glanced back at me. ââI accomplished what I was sent to do as a human, and he restored me.â
âSheâs trained?â Ethan nodded seemingly impressed. âFantastic.â
âYes,â I lied, and the air immediately turned bitter, while Cassius laughed inside my head. âBut it might be good to get a few more sessions in this evening, just in case.â
âAnd by sessions you meanâ¦â Ethan pointed between the two of us. âNever mind, donât tell me.â He raised his hands above his head. âIf you tell me the mental image will permanently ruin my existence.â
Genesis sighed behind him. âThatâs so romantic though, donât you think? That theyâre finally together?â
A sudden wind whistled along the hall and swirled into the room.
âSweet hell,â Ethan muttered as Cassius tossed clothes in my direction. The air had shifted.
âWhat?â I glanced around the room. âWhatâs wrong?â
âAngels,â Mason spat. âOr just one in particular. Seems heâs paying us a visit. Damn it, I only set the table for six. If he wants ham heâs shit out of luck.â
âYes, because Iâm sure thatâs whatâs on his mind,â Cassius hissed. âHam!â
âSays the one who tried to chase a blue jay with his pitchfork!â
âI had no pitchfork!â
âYes, a lament Iâm quite familiar with.â Mason rolled his eyes. âIf only I had a pitchfork, a bow and arrow, a gun, I could hunt my own meat. Thank God your appetite will disappear, I was afraid the goldfish was next.â
Cassius shared a glance with me. âWe have goldfish?â
âGoldfish.â Genesis laughed. âMason likes to see how long he can keep them alive.â
âSo theyâve died before?â Cassius asked.
âItâs not like he revives them, just buys more,â Genesis shrugged. âNow, you both needâ¦â She glanced down and coughed. âClothes.â
Ethan was already stomping down the hall, most likely making Sariel aware that his sudden presence in his house wasnât welcome.
âCassius?â
He turned, his muscles rippling beneath his simple black T-shirt. As a human it had fit him perfectly. As an immortal, it was almost like his muscles were straining to break free.
Give him a cape and heâd be able to star in the next Avengers movie, no problem.
âItâs about Alex. Look, I know he drives you crazy, he drives everyone crazy but⦠since Sariel is here, can you just⦠un-freeze him with your Dark Ones Mojo?â
Cassius tilted his head, a look of complete seriousness crossed his face. âMojo?â
âYou know.â I lifted my hand in the air and twisted as power swirled to my fingertips. âWhen you do that.â
âYou have the power to do it, too.â
âI do?â I twirled my hand again, my fingertips heavy as if something needed to release from them.
Cassius crossed his arms. âWill it.â
I closed my eyes and flicked my wrist, willing Alex to speak again.
âSon of a bitch!â Alexâs voice erupted from downstairs.
âThink it worked?â I laughed.
Alex cursed so loudly I was surprised Sariel didnât silence him forever.
âA bit too well.â Cassius held out his hand. âNow, letâs go face Sariel.â
I sighed. âYou think heâs going to be angry.â
Cassius didnât answer right away. âI think that I often underestimate Sarielâ¦â
âIs that good or bad?â
âI never know.â Cassius led me down the stairs. âUntil the exact moment it happens.â
