Genesis
I immediately tried to recoil, ashamed, embarrassed, and horrified that I was in his arms without any clothes on. As if sensing my thoughts, Ethan looked away, jaw clenched.
âYou were taking them off.â
âI was hot!â I yelled, happy that my voice was back but still shaking from the pain. It was still thereâthe searing heatâbut it was bearable.
âI had it under control,â a voice said from the corner.
I pulled the blankets and covered myself as Mason stepped out of the shadows, now looking like his normal self.
âYou didnât need to interfere, Ethan.â
âSheâs. Not. Yours.â Ethan hissed.
âNow you claim me,â I mumbled.
His jaw popped, as if heâd been trying to clench his teeth but had overdone it and nearly dislocated his entire face.
âIf you would have given in right away, your clothing wouldnât have been an issue!â
âSo itâs my fault.â My lower lip trembled. âIs that what youâre saying?â
âDamn it, Ethan.â Mason made his way to the bed and threw another blanket over my body. Iâd completely forgotten I was still nakedâand arguingâprobably because I was still so hot. âJust leave.â
âSheâs my mate.â Ethan released me but didnât leave his position next to me on the bed.
Mason hung his head. Dark circles framed his eyes. âThen do whatâs best for her. Just leave her be.â
âIf I leave, the marking wonât be complete.â
âSheâs been through enough this evening. Let her rest before the final stage. I think itâs the least you can do⦠considering.â
Ethan hung his head and whispered, âFor my sacrifice⦠Iâm the bad one in this scenario?â
âYou became the bad one in this scenario the minute you heard your mateâs screams and didnât come running. Now get out.â Mason growled the last part so loud my ears started to ring.
Ethan cursed and stomped toward the door, leaving me.
I learned something in that instant.
He was a jerk.
No, he was a selfish ass.
But I missed him.
And I hated both him and myself because heâd turned away, and I needed him to be close.
My body yearned for him.
And the heat returned full forceâ I threw off the blanket then panicked and grabbed it again.
âIâm not going to seduce another immortalâs mate.â Mason rolled his eyes. âJust⦠try to stay still.â
âIf I close my eyes,â I whispered. âWill I keep dreaming⦠things?â
Mason nodded slowly. âItâs part of the process. The pain will come and go three times in the next twelve hours. You survived the first. Now you have two more.â
âAnd Ethan?â My body shook with fear.
âIs an ass.â Mason shrugged. âBut Iâll be here. Iâve seen worse, believe me. When myâ¦â His voice died, and with it, his eyes closed. âNever mind.
âJust know, it will pass, and when you open your eyes, Iâll be here. With water.â
âAnd a margarita,â I added, thinking that next to Ethan it sounded like the best thing in the world.
Mason burst out laughing. âIâll see what I can do.â His eyes flickered to the clock by the bed. âYou have five more minutes.â
âYou'll be here?â I asked in a weak voice.
He studied me, frowning before giving a firm nod. âI swear it.â
âThank you.â I closed my eyes and lay back against the pillows, waiting for the next wave.
I expected Mason to stay put.
Instead, he lay down next to me and grabbed my hand. âYou wonât break me.â
The last thing he whispered, âSweet dreams,â was funny because I knew that the next few hours would be nothing but nightmares and wanting something I knew I could never have.
