Chapter 32: foreshadow

Surprised, I widened my eyes as my boss looked back at him and noticed a joyful smile on his face.

"I didn't expect to see you again.", he scratched the back of his head.

„Oh, it's nice you seem to know each other already. Jacob, if you have any kind of questions, my door is always open.", she told him and left with accepting an incoming call.

The awkwardness was clearly written all over my face. "I didn't expect to meet you, either.".

"I mean, damn. What are you doing here? Friends told me you went home like half a year ago.".

For whatever reason, I was drying already dry glasses in front of me with a towel. God, I was so confused. Seeing my ex here was probably the last thing I expected. „As you can see, I'm back. Yeeyy!", I cheered. „No, some things happened in Korea, so I decided to fly back and finish high school here...I don't know for how long I will stay after my graduation.". I bit my lower lip guiltily.

„Wait, what are you doing?", I moved aside, as Jacob stepped next to me and started drying the glasses as well. „I thought I'm supposed to help you".

I nodded as I realized he was actually an intern and I had to show him all the things I have to do.

Jacob silently set the glass back down in front of him and eyed the rest questioningly. "Aren't they dry?"

I felt the heat rising inside me. "Ah yeah, sorry about that. I'm just so confused right now.".

He started laughing. „Don't worry. I was very surprised as well, when I recognized you.".

„But uhm, what are you doing here? I thought you were going to move to Sydney with your family.", I asked him curiously.

I met Jacob during the first week of high school. He was a player on the basketball team, but because of an injury he was only on the substitutes' bench at the beginning. Due to the fact that I volunteered as a first aider at school three years ago, I was able to get to know him. Because of his knee, he was often with us in the hospital room, and I had the feeling that after a few weeks he was just simulating his pain to see me. That was the beginning of our relationship.

After about 14 months, we parted on good terms because he confessed to me that he was moving to Australia with his entire family. And since I was not ready for a long distance relationship, we agreed to go our separate ways from now on.

And look where I am now. In the second long distance relationship.

„Sidney. Yeah.", he paused for a few seconds. It seemed like he had to think about the right words. „My mother became ill about 1,5 years ago and passed away a few months after. So we all decided to stay in the US.".

„Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!".

„No! Don't be! How could you have known?", he tried to calm me. „So now I'm currently doing part-time jobs here and there to save up some money. I'm planning to move out with my girlfriend in November, you know.".

„Oh, you have a girlfriend!?", I marveled.

„Yes, since February actually.".

„That's nice. That's really nice.", I nodded slowly. „I'm so happy for you.".

„Okay, just for the record. We shouldn't make this awkward because of what used to go on between us in the past, should we?", Jacob suggested.

„Of course! Don't worry." I agreed. „We are friends, like in the beginning.".

[Heeseung POV]

5 days later:

„Are you sure we bought enough bottles?", Sunghoon asked as he put a case of beer in the refrigerator.

"There are 20 of us, and we have 10 cases of beer. Come down bro.", I calmed him by nodding towards the kitchen counter. „We also bought about 30 bottles of vodka and stuff."

„Who knows, you will only turn 22 once.". My best friend shrugged.

I couldn't really concentrate about my party preparations. Today was the last football match of this round against the league leader. If we win, we beat the others by two points, which is enough to move up a league. This would be the first time that our school team would achieve this and accordingly my thoughts were only circling around tonight.

„You really need to come down.", Sunghoon said, and suddenly pressed a beer into my hand. „It's not that deep. We will swing this tonight.". He walked past me and flopped onto the couch.

„Also, are you going to introduce us to your girlfriend on your birthday? Or almost girlfriend, whatever.".

My brain stopped working for a second. „She won't come.". I answered briefly, earning a weird glance from him.

„She won't come? Did something happen? Like it's your birthday.".

I rolled my eyes in annoyance and put the closed beer back into the fridge. „I told you before, she doesn't live here.".

„Doesn't live here!", Sunghoon mocked me. Where does she live then? Africa or what?".

„I will introduce her when I think the timing is good, okay?". My voice was a bit harsh, but I couldn't control it any longer. He really drives me up the wall sometimes. „Also, can you finish your beer? We have to leave in about 5 minutes.", I told him, and left the living room to get my bag from upstairs.

Hyeona POV

My roommate Kathy and I were just on a little shopping trip in downtown Vancouver. Luckily, the weather was cooperating, and it wasn't pouring like it was supposed to according to the weather forecast.

"You could get him this!", Kathy pointed to a water air mattress in the shape of two breasts that was on display in the store window. Obviously, we had just landed in front of a sex store.

"Are you stupid?". I walked past her, shaking my head.

"What? I'm sure he and his friends would think it's funny, and you can send it in the mail.".

"No way am I going to buy something like that for his birthday. I'd rather kill myself.". I said and stopped as I noticed I lost sight of my friend. Annoyed, I walked back when I saw her standing at the next shop window. „What about this one?". I stopped, and my eyes met a mannequin that was dressed in black rags. Although, that could not even call rags anymore. This was just a transparent something that should probably pass as lingerie.

„Then I might as well go naked," I put on an are you kidding me look, but Kathy just shrugged in amusement. "I'm sure he wouldn't mind that either.".

„Kathyyyy....", I sighed and pulled her along behind me.

„What? I would never have guessed you to be such a prude.", she complained.

But I defended myself. „I'm not a prude. Our relationship just hasn't reached this point yet.".

„Aww, a cute innocent baby.", she teased me. „I really thought you had sex with Jacob. I mean, you were dating for almost a year.".

I chewed on my lower lip.

Kathy noticed my uncertainty. "You know, even though I come across as a crazy bitch, you can always talk to me about things like this. I'm your older sister.".

Suddenly I remembered something that I hadn't told her yet. "Omg, you know what?", I gasped excitedly. "Jacob is starting to work at our movie theater.".

"JACOB DAVIS? Like, your ex?".

I nodded quickly. „I know it's crazy. My reaction was the same. He was an intern one day and I showed him my working routine, but he signed the contract yesterday.".

Kathy hissed with squinted eyes. „You know, ex-boyfriend at work is dangerous.".

But I quickly wanted to drive this thought out of her head. "He's apparently been taken again for several months and is planning to move out with his girlfriend. So don't panic!".

"Girl, never mind, I'm just telling you".
