âSooooo,â Joan said softly, occasionally glancing at Ifrit. The girl looked as taut as an overpulled bowstring. She hadnât touched the tea in front of her, only sitting and waiting. âHow you two been?â
âNot well,â Ifrit said. âHe is going to be okay, isnât he?â
âHeâll be fine,â Joan said. âItâs just some blood loss. I lose a lot more than that all the time and Iâm half his size.â
Ifrit gave another soft sigh before leaning back in the chair. âHe shouldnât have been hurt at all. Itâs all my fault.â
âWhat happened?â Joan asked. âWhy were they after you?â
âWe donât know,â Ifrit said. âTheyâve been hunting me for so long. For a little bit it seemed they had finally stopped, after we left Hearth. But then⦠wellâ¦â She looked around for a moment before speaking in a soft, hushed tone. âWhen will the Chosen arrive? Your father is one, correct? This is his keep?â
âHardwin wonât be coming, at least for a while,â Joan said. âHeâs with most of the other Chosen working to put an end to the war between the demons and, well, I guess everyone else. Youâre right, though. This is his keep.â
âYou⦠call him by his name? Not father?â Ifrit asked, staring at her.
Joan gave a shrug. âI guess? Itâs⦠he⦠him being my father is kind of⦠new. To both of us. We didnât know that⦠itâs a long story. I usually just call him that when I want to weird him out.â
The look Ifrit gave her made her suspect that only made it more confusing.
âDonât worry about it,â Joan said. âSo you donât have any idea who they are?â
âI⦠wellâ¦â Ifrit said nervously before looking around again. âYou are a daughter of the Chosen. Not to mention you saved us that one time. If we canât trust you, who can we trust?â Joan couldnât help but feel the girl was telling herself that more than her. âWe have one thing. This is why we came to meet with the Chosen. Before those⦠things ambushed us.â She reached into her bag and rummaged around in it. For a moment she looked panicked before letting out a sigh of relief and pulling out a small scroll. She opened it to reveal a lot of meaningless letters, likely a code of some sort. What was most important, however, was a small symbol at the end. A scorpion curled in a circle.
âHuh,â Joan said. âThe Scorpionâs Venom. I didnât think theyâd pop up for another decade or two.â
âWHAT?!â Ifrit yelled so loud it made Joanâs ears ring. âY-you know them? YOU KNOW WHO THEY ARE?!â
Joan cringed a moment before the door opened and Vivian came rushing inside. âI heard yelling. Is everything okay?â she asked, her eyes shifting to Joan. âAre you okay?â
âEars ringing, but Iâm fine,â Joan said. âIâm right here. No need to yell. Do you mind?â she asked, holding her hand out. Ifrit, grudgingly, handed it over. She looked it over for a moment before nodding. âYeah. Probably them.â
âAnd who, exactly, is âthemâ?â Ifrit asked. âWeâve looked everywhere to find them! Thereâs been nothing! How do YOU know them?â
âUhhhhhâ¦â Joan said before giving a sheepish smile. âItâd be really hard to explain and itâs kind of⦠a Chosen thing. But donât worry, theyâre not that big a deal.â
âOh Joan,â Vivian said with a sigh, lifting a hand up to her forehead and shaking it. âThat fills me with very little comfort.â
âItâs fine,â Joan said before handing the scroll back to Ifrit. âTheyâre just a weird darkness obsessed cult who are worshiping a non-existent âservantâ of the Scorpion. A servant that, by the way, died centuries ago.â Sheâd know, theyâd ended up entering its prison across so many of the Heroâs lives. Whatever that thing had been, it hadnât been a servant of the Scorpion. Dead for ages, too.
Still, they shouldnât have been active, certainly not this active, for a long time. More importantly sheâd never seen them having any connection to Francis. She eyed Ifrit for a moment. This girl had to be the connection, so who--
âJoan?â Andreas voice suddenly filled her head, making her jump.
âGAH! Donât do that without some warning!â Joan said.
âWhat? Whatâd I do?â Ifrit asked nervously.
âNothing, not you, sorry,â Joan said before giving a sigh. âVoices in my head. Andreas. Chosen. Magic. Itâs a magic thing. Stop looking at me like Iâm crazy!â
âNo,â Ifrit said.
âJoan? Are you okay?â Andreas asked.
âYeah, one second,â Joan said over the bond.
âDonât one second us,â Korgronâs voice came next.
âOh by the stars,â Joan said before groaning. âIâll be right back, Iâve got to go get yelled at. Did you tell them?â she asked, glaring at Vivian.
âOf course,â Vivian said.
âJoan!â Korgronâs voice yelled in her head now.
âYou know, most grandmothers wouldnât try and get their precious granddaughter yelled at by all of the Chosen,â Joan said before giving an annoyed sigh.
âJOAN!â Korgronâs voice echoed in her head. She had to give the demon credit, she didnât know someone COULD be that loud over the bond.
âMost granddaughterâs wouldnât try and fight a bunch of⦠whatever those were by themselves,â Vivian said.
âFair,â Joan said before quickly leaving the room. âIâm here, calm down.â
âI will not calm down,â Korgron said. âYou could have died.â
âIâve fought shades before,â Joan said over the bond. âAnd while I havenât fought them as Joan, I wouldnât have fought the if I was in any real danger. I had most my equipment too. I was fine.â
âI find that hard to believe,â Hardwinâs voice said.
âYou know, Iâve been very well behaved,â Joan said. âBesides, donât you all have a war to worry about? A bit more important than if I get in a fight with a couple of shades. I can handle myself.â
âJoan, itâs not that,â Bauteutâs voice said next. âWeâre just worried about you. We want to be sure youâre not being reckless.â
Joan gave a groan before leaning back against the wall. âBauteut too? Is everyone here? All the Chosen? Even got the queen in here so she can scold me as well?â
Joan was greeted by silence. She waited a few moments before letting out another groan and sinking down to the ground. âHello, Queen Emeline.â
âHello, Joan,â Emelineâs voice came through next.
âAnybody else?â Joan asked.
âIâm here,â Zorn said. âThalgren isnât, though. Heâs with my sister.â
âQakog?â Joan asked.
âNo,â Korgron said. âNeither is Myrin, Chase or Searle. How much danger are you in?â
âVery little,â Joan said. âAnd youâll all be happy to know I likely wonât be in any. Apparently the Scorpionâs Venom are the ones after Francis.â
She was greeted by a long, long period of silence after that.
âAaaaand none of you have any idea who they are, do you?â Joan asked.
âAdding this to the list,â Bauteut said.
This story has been unlawfully obtained without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.
âHow big a threat are they and where do we need to go?â Hardwin asked.
âVery little and nowhere,â Joan said. âThey were misguided. They were serving this weird shadow creature that died a while back. Not actually connected to the Scorpion at all. Iâm surprised to see them active at all this early so Iâm planning to look into it.â
âNo,â Korgronâs voice echoed in her head, even if it wasnât nearly as loud.
âAnd I know exactly where to go,â Joan continued. âOkay, Korgron? Whatâs wrong, why are you so testy?â
âI am NOT testy!â Korgron snapped.
âPolitics,â Andreas said.
âIâve got this handled,â Joan said. âNot taking any risks. Youâve got enough to deal with without worrying about things I actually can handle.â
âNo!â Korgron said. âIâll come down there and--â
âKorgron,â Hardwin said, cutting her off. âYou know whatâll happen now if you leave.â
âUghhhhhhh. Bucket, then,â Korgron said.
âI canât yet,â Bauteut said. âWe need all the healers here we can get.â
âSee?â Joan said. âYouâre needed there. I can handle this on my own.â
âJoan, itâs not that we donât trust you,â Bauteut said. âBut you have a talent. If there is no threat within three days travel, you will somehow manage to still find an apocalypse.â
âOkay, while true that doesnât change much,â Joan said. âIâll have Francis with me, and enough magical gear to level a kingdom.â
âWait, what?â Emeline asked.
âThe belt,â Joan said. âIâll have the belt.â
âYou still have that?â Emeline asked.
âThey didnât want to leave me unattended,â Joan said. She left off the fact she hadnât been wearing it lately because she didnât like the idea of having something so powerful around her waist when there wasnât any actual threats around. âListen, I just need to go to Seasrest, see if the--â
âSeasrest?â Emeline asked, this time her voice going frantic.
âSeasrest? The demon city?â Korgron asked.
âFirst of all, itâs not a demon city,â Emeline said firmly. âIf anything, itâs one of ours.â
âTheyâd disagree,â Joan said before she could help herself. âThough I think technically theyâre neutral. Ish.â
âDamn it, Joan,â Hardwin said.
âItâs fine,â Joan said. âI swear, I can handle this. Easily. Iâll just pop in, find their fake scorpion, then pop out. Done before you know it. Tracking them shouldnât be that hard, especially if I can find the Silver Beetle.â
âJoan, if you need our help you know weâll come as soon as we can,â Hardwin said.
âIf I needed your help Iâd ask for it,â Joan said. âIâm better about that. This isnât⦠well. You have more important things to worry about. I can handle this. Okay? Just trust me?â
Korgron gave a grunt, but none of them raised objections. It seemed they did have some faith in her after all.
âThank you,â Joan said. âAnything else?â
âActuallyâ¦â Emeline said.
âWhat?â Joan asked, thankful that her suspicion wouldnât translate well over the bond.
âIf you are going to Seasrest, Iâd like to have some people attend with you,â Emeline said. âWe do have some delegates there already, but increasing our presence could only be beneficial during these times.â
âThatâs it?â Joan asked.
âThatâs it,â Emeline said.
âSure. I ummm⦠I guess thatâs fine. Just tell me who they are before you send them,â Joan said.
âI⦠suppose I can do that,â Emeline said. âIs there anyone in particular youâd like to join you?â
âNot really,â Joan said. âI just want to make sure it isnât anybody who tried to kill me in the past. It might make things⦠awkward.â
âJoan, I swear, I would neverâ¦â Emeline trailed off. They both knew it was a lie, after all. âI wouldnât do that now.â
âI know,â Joan said. âAnd Iâm mostly able to accept that. Doesnât mean it wouldnât still be awkward. Oh! That one woman, from before. Uhhhh⦠Wind? Something? Who was watching me when I was there?â
âWendalin?â Emeline asked.
âYeah, her,â Joan said. âShe seemed nice.â
âIâll try, but I do not believe she is currently available,â Emeline said. âIâll send a small detachment when Iâve made my choices. It--â
âThis isnât going to be an attempt to delay me, is it?â Joan asked.
She was greeted by silence again.
âYou know, even if you did delay me itâs not like you all arenât busy,â Joan said. âIâve been here for the⦠de-escalation of the war thing many, many times. I know itâs going to take a while. I canât help with it, but you all canât just expect me to sit in my room and wait for you to fix every little thing. So can you please just trust me a little bit?â
âIâll have them there within a week,â Emeline said. âWould that be quick enough?â
âThank you,â Joan said. âAlso, one more thing. Next time a little more talking before all of you yell at me. It was just a few shades.â
âWhich you fought alone,â Bauteut said.
âSomebody had to,â Joan said. âIf I let them go, they might have brought back whoever summoned them to start with. Or worse, gone down to the village and attacked the people there. I was the best equipped to deal with the situation and I had the training. What would you have rather I done?â
âJoan,â Zorn said. âI donât think any of us think you made the wrong choice. Nobody is happy that it was the right choice.â
âI donât think it was the right choice,â Korgron said. âSheâs a lot more important than--â
âJust keep being careful,â Andreas said, cutting the demon off. Joan couldnât help grinning at that.
âI will,â Joan said. âPromise. And Iâll get a hold of you if I need you. Iâll make sure I take some of those stored spells to call for you if I need to. Try and keep your sister-in-law from causing too much trouble, okay? Sheâs usually way less tense about this kind of thing. The Demon Lord must have her really riled.â
âYou have no idea,â Andreas said before sighing. âThings will get better, wonât they?â
âThis is the first time they can,â Joan said. âBut hey. This time they CAN get better. I trust youâll all figure it out.â
âThis is all so much workâ¦â Andreas said.
âWorth it though, isnât it? After all, Isla made it this time,â Joan said.
âItâs definitely worth it,â Andreas said without a momentâs hesitation.
âOh, right, one more thing!â Joan said quickly.
âYes?â Andreas asked.
âIf you can, see if you can talk to Chase,â Joan said. âHeâs from Seasrest, he might have some advice.â
There was a long moment of silence following that. She could practically feel the questions building. Finally, the storm broke.
âThe Chosen of the Gauntlets is from WHERE?â Emeline asked.
âGreat talking to all of you,â Joan said quickly. âAndreas?â
âBye, Joan,â Andreas said. âJust try and stay out of trouble. And wear your belt.â
âFine, fine,â Joan said. Well, if she was traveling she was hardly going to NOT wear it, now was she? Joan felt the bond end before she gave a soft sigh. Well, at least she kind of had the support of the Chosen. Ish. Maybe. Oh well, sheâd figure it out.
It wasnât the end of the world this time. She walked back into the room and then paused. âWhereâs Ifrit?â Joan asked.
âShe went to go check on Francis,â Vivian said. âDidnât you see her leave?â
âI was a little distracted,â Joan said. âGetting yelled at. Korgronâs pretty tense up there. A little warning next time would be nice.â
âPlease donât run off like that,â Vivian said before giving a light sigh. âYou could have been hurt, dear. You know how important you are. To all of us.â
âI know,â Joan said. âBut I canât just ignore someone in danger and I canât just leave something out there to hurt people. You all know this. I wouldnât be me if I did.â
âI know,â Vivian said before reaching out. Joan cringed for a moment before she realized the woman was going to give her a hug. She didnât resist, letting herself get pulled into the embrace. âMy sweet, dear little Joan. You truly are such a⦠special little child, arenât you?â
âI try,â Joan said. âSorry I made you worry, all of you. I just⦠I canât not. You know?â
âI know,â Vivian said. âPlease keep being safe when you can. If not for your sake, then for your dear old grandmotherâs?â
Joan gave a light snicker before nodding. âCompared to things Iâm used to facing, this is way easier. This is stuff normal people can deal with.â
âJust donât get sloppy,â Vivian said. âYou are a very talented young thing, but you are a lot more delicate than you realize.â The arms around her tightened. âPlease.â
Joan nodded, giving the woman a tight hug of her own. âIâll be careful, I promise.â Slowly she pulled back and the hug was released. âIâm going to go check on them, okay?â She quickly turned and walked away, leaving Vivian behind.
She had to reach up to wipe some of the moisture from her eyes and she couldnât help but have a big, silly grin on her face. Yeah, maybe her family now was a bit over protective. But at least she knew they cared. There were certainly worse things.
