An hour later.
Nie Qingruâs car rolled over the fallen leaves as it drove into the Nie residence.
She called Nie Tao before coming. The living room was filled with both old and young, but the atmosphere was too heavy.
Everyone sat in their seats. They either had their heads lowered while drinking coffee or looked out the window. No one spoke.
Even the weak Old Master Nie made an appearance. He looked at everyone as he was wheeled into the living room by a Filipino maid.
âDad.â Nie Tao went over to help the Filipino maid push the wheelchair to the center.
The other members also put down their miscellaneous tasks and looked at Old Master Nie, greeting him respectfully.
Old Master Nie did not look at anyone. His voice sounded tired as he asked, âWhereâs Qingru? She hasnât arrived yet?â
Nie Tao answered truthfully, âShe called me and said sheâs on the way. She should be here soon.â
Old Master Nie stopped talking.
â¦
In fact, Nie Qingru had arrived outside the residence while they were talking.
Before entering, she received a call from the council member on good terms with the Nie family. Just as she placed the phone to her ear, an anxious voice came from the other end.
âEmpress, I only agreed to help them because of you. In the end, things have turned out like this. The media is clinging to me and wonât let me go. The higher-ups have already begun to investigate meâ¦â
There was no explicit blame in the other partyâs words, but every word was accusatory.
Nie Qingru took a deep breath, and her pitch-black eyes revealed a hint of coldness. âCouncilman Allen, youâre blaming me.â
Afraid of her, Councilman Allen tried to smooth things over. âYour Majesty, you know thatâs not what I meant. Itâs just that this matter has blown up too much and the impact is too bad.
âThe election is next month, and I still hope to participate. But if I canât resolve this matter, I donât even know how far my career as a senator can goâ¦
âDo you understand my difficulties?â
âDonât worry, Iâll give you an explanation.â Nie Qingru was smart and naturally understood the meaning between the lines.
Councilman Allen was not at ease, but there was no better way. He could only believe she could handle this mess.
âThen Iâll have to trouble you, Empress.â
âItâs only right of me.â
Nie Qingru hung up and put the phone down. She sat in silence for a long time.
Shadow opened the door, and seeing her furious expression, asked softly, âWas it the councilman?â@@novelbin@@
Nie Qingru pressed a hand between her eyebrows as if she wanted to suppress her anger. âHeh. Up until now, the council members, the police, and the Privy Council have contacted me. Only, they havenât called me to explain why they didnât listen to me! Theyâre sure that Iâll clean up their mess for them. This is my good family!â
The Nies were such a hypocritical, scheming, and cold-blooded family.
As one of them, no matter how much she hated these people, she couldnât get rid of her background and change the blood flowing in her veins.
Shadow was silent for a moment. âDid Qiao Nian do that at the police station?â
Nie Qingruâs frown deepened, and her tone was displeased. âWho else besides her?â
âI donât think itâs her style.â
Qiao Nian was more direct.
She did not usually scheme this much.
Nie Qingru dropped her hand and looked at him sharply as if examining his inner heart. After a moment, she looked away. âEven if itâs not her, itâs related to her.â
