Matthew Wild
The ballroom was a maelstrom of activity. My heart pounded as I escorted Katharina through the bustling throng of guests and guards, her face pale but composed. The sudden scream had turned a night of celebration into one of fear and confusion. We moved quickly, the urgency in my steps mirrored by the frantic movements around us.
"Stay close, Kathy" I urged, my voice firm but gentle.
She nodded, her eyes wide but resolute. I could see the questions in her gaze, but there was no time for explanations. I had to trust that she understood the gravity of the situation. As we made our way toward a side exit, the imposing figure of General Hector entered the room, his presence commanding immediate attention. He began barking orders, directing the palace guards with the precision of a seasoned military leader.
"Secure the perimeter!" Hector's voice boomed. "No one leaves without my command. Find out what happened and report back immediately."
The guards moved with practiced efficiency, their armor clinking as they fanned out across the palace grounds. I paused briefly, my eyes searching the room for familiar faces amidst the chaos. My parents, the Duke and Duchess of Canterbury, stood near the entrance, their expressions a mix of concern and determination. They had always been pillars of strength in times of crisis, and tonight was no different.
"Matthew!" my mother called out, pushing through the crowd to reach me, my father right behind her. "What's happening? Are you and Katharina alright?"
"We're okay, Mother," I replied, my voice calm despite the adrenaline coursing through me. "But there's been a... situation. A guard was found dead outside the castle doors."
My father's face paled slightly. "Dead? How? Who could have done this?"
"No one knows yet," I admitted, glancing back towards the entrance where the disturbance had originated. "But we need to get Katharina to safety."
My father nodded, his jaw set in determination. "Of course. Take care of your sister. We'll handle things here."
As my parents turned to confer with General Hector, I resumed our hurried path toward a discreet hallway leading to the secure chambers deep within the palace. The grand tapestries lining the walls, depicting our kingdom's storied history, seemed almost mocking in their serenity given the current turmoil.
"Matthew," Katharina's voice was soft, almost a whisper, as we moved swiftly down the corridor. "Who do you think is behind this?"
I shook my head, wishing I had an answer. "I don't know. But we can't take any chances."
We reached the heavy oak door of the secure chambers, guarded by two of our most trusted soldiers. They nodded at me, recognizing the gravity of the situation.
"Keep watch and let no one through, the princes orders" I instructed them firmly. "We need to ensure Katharina's safety until we understand what's happening."
The guards saluted, their expressions solemn and focused. As we stepped into the dimly lit room, the door closed behind us with a solid thud. The chamber, though simple, offered a sense of sanctuaryâa stark contrast to the opulence and chaos of the ballroom.
Katharina sank into a plush chair, her composure finally starting to fray at the edges. I crouched before her, taking her hands in mine. "We'll be alright," I said, trying to infuse my voice with the confidence I wanted her to feel. "Sebastian and the guards will sort this out. We just need to stay here and wait for news."
She nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Thank you, Matthew," she whispered, her voice tinged with a mix of fear and gratitude. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
I managed a reassuring smile, though the weight of responsibility bore down on me. "You don't have to worry about that," I replied. "I'm here. Always."
A soft knock that suddenly reverberated through the room broke the tension. My instincts kicked in, and I shot a glance at Katharina, whose eyes had widened in apprehension. Cautiously, I approached the door, my grip tightening on the knob.
"Who is it?" I called out, my voice steady despite the churn of emotions within me.
"It's Marcus," came the familiar, reassuring voice from the other side.
I exhaled slowly, relief coursing through me. I quickly opened the door to find Marcus standing there. Â Tonight, his dark hair was slightly mussed, and there was a hint of weariness in his eyes, but his presence was a welcome sight.
"Matthew," he greeted me, stepping into the room with his usual composed grace. He closed the door behind him, offering Katharina a quick nod of acknowledgment before focusing his attention on me. "I came to check on you both. How are things here?"
Before I could respond, Katharina, her eyes scanning Marcus with cautious curiosity, spoke up. "Who is this man?" she asked, her voice steady but edged with concern.
I glanced between them, offering a reassuring smile. "Katharina, this is Marcus," I said, motioning towards him. "He's a close friend of Sebastian and, by extension, a trusted friend of mine as well. He's been a steadfast ally to us."
Marcus inclined his head respectfully towards Katharina. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Lady Katharina," he said, his tone warm and respectful. "Sebastian speaks very highly of you."
Katharina's posture relaxed slightly, but her eyes remained cautious. "Thank you, Marcus," she replied, a note of relief in her voice.
"We're alright," I replied, feeling a mix of gratitude and anxiety. "But what's happening out there, Marcus? Any news?"
Marcus's eyes flickered with a guarded expression as he glanced between Katharina and me. "The guards are sweeping the grounds and securing all entry points," he began, his tone measured. "General Hector is coordinating the investigation. It's still unclear exactly what's happened, but it's serious."
Katharina rose from her chair, her face pale but resolute. "Serious how?" she asked, her voice betraying a tremor despite her efforts to remain calm. "Do you think this is an attack?"
Marcus softened his gaze as he looked at her. "We're treating it as a significant threat," he replied gently. "But we're doing everything to ensure your and everyone else's safety."
"Thank you, Marcus," Katharina said quietly, drawing some comfort from his steady presence. "What about my parents? And Sebastian?"
"Your parents are in the main hall," Marcus assured her. "They're helping with managing the situation. As for Sebastianâ"
My concern sharpened at the mention of his name. "Sebastian was with General Hector when I last saw him. Is he still there?"
Marcus nodded, his expression grave. "Yes, he's been crucial in helping manage our response. But he insisted on checking the perimeter himself. He's out there with the guards now."
A mix of relief and anxiety washed over me. Sebastian's bravery was admirable, yet the thought of him facing potential dangers outside unsettled me. The night had taken such an unexpected turn, and the risks seemed to multiply with each passing moment.
"We need to understand what happened," I said, my voice firm. "The kingdom deserves some answers."
Marcus sighed, his face reflecting the gravity of the situation. "I understand, Matthew. But right now, the best course is to remain vigilant and wait for more information. General Hector will keep us updated as they learn more."
I nodded, knowing he was right. Acting impulsively without full knowledge of the threat could lead to greater peril. "Alright. But if there's anything I can doâ"
Marcus placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder, his grip firm and steady. "I'll keep you informed," he promised. "For now, stay with Katharina. Your presence here is crucial."
The oppressive silence of the chamber was abruptly shattered by a sharp, urgent knock at the door, followed by it swinging open with such force that it nearly rebounded off the wall. Alice burst into the room, her face flushed and her eyes wide with a mix of fear and determination.
"Alice!" I exclaimed, stepping forward instinctively, my heart skipping a beat at her sudden entrance. Katharina and Marcus turned towards her, their expressions mirroring my shock and concern.
"Alice, what's going on?" I asked, my voice tight with worry.
She paused for a moment, catching her breath. Her normally composed appearance was replaced by a look of fierce urgency. "Matthew," she panted, quickly surveying the room to ensure we were safe. "It's chaos out there. I didn't know where to go."
Katharina took a hesitant step forward, her concern evident. "Alice, calm down. Tell us what happened."
Alice swallowed hard, her gaze flickering between us. "T-There's so much confusion," she stammered. "I was busy with someone, then I saw guards running everywhere, people shouting... I saw blood. They were carrying someone out. I... I got scared."
I moved to her side, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "It's fine, you're okay" I said softly, trying to soothe her panic.
Marcus stepped closer, his eyes filled with concern as he addressed Alice. "Did you see anything else? Anyone suspicious?"
Alice shook her head, her voice barely above a whisper. "No, just the chaos. I was too scared to look around."
Katharina pulled me aside, her expression tense and her voice low. "She said she was busy with someone," she whispered, her tone laced with disgust.
I frowned, trying to process Katharina's words amidst the chaos of the situation. "Busy with someone?" I repeated quietly, glancing back at Alice, who stood with Marcus, her shoulders hunched and her gaze haunted.
Katharina nodded grimly. "Yes, she mentioned it when she first came in. Said she was preoccupied with someone or something before she found us," she explained, her features hardening with suspicion.
I paused, absorbing Katharina's words and the tension that hung heavy in the air. Her suspicion was understandable given the circumstances, but her implication about Alice's personal life struck a nerve. We had both known about Alice's preferences for women, and though it had never been openly discussed, it was an accepted fact among the prince.
"Katharina," I began, my voice steady but tinged with frustration, "what Alice does in her personal life has no bearing on the situation at hand. Right now, our priority is understanding what happened and ensuring everyone's safety."
Katharina's expression softened slightly, but her disapproval lingered in her eyes. "I know," she replied quietly, "but you'd think she would stop after being caught before, and the Prince having to speak with her. It's disgusting."
"Kathy, stop," I said firmly, my voice carrying a tone of finality. I didn't want to delve deeper into this conversation, especially not now, when tensions were already running high.
Katharina blinked, taken aback by my interruption. Her expression hardened briefly before softening again, a mixture of frustration and resignation in her eyes.
As Marcus prepared to leave, I felt the weight of the night's uncertainties press down on me even more heavily. "Thank you, Marcus," I said, my voice thick with unspoken fears and gratitude.
He paused at the door, turning back to us with a look of deep concern. "Stay safe," he urged quietly.
For a moment, the tension seemed almost unbearable, and I felt the need to lighten the mood, if only for a second. "Marcus," I called out, just as he was about to step through the doorway.
He turned, raising an eyebrow in question. "Yes?"
I managed a small, wry smile. "You know, if you find any quills or cakes along the way, feel free to send them my way. We could use a distraction from all this chaos."
A chuckle escaped Marcus's lips, the corners of his mouth lifting in a rare smile. "Cakes and quills, huh?" he said, shaking his head slightly. "I'll see what I can do. But don't count on the cakes; the kitchens are probably in lockdown too."
"Cakes and quills?" Katharina said, seemingly confused by our jesting. "What's so amusing about cakes and quills?" she asked, her tone curious yet tinged with a hint of bemusement.
I turned to Katharina, realising she hadn't been privy to the light-hearted exchange Marcus and I shared earlier. "It's just a bit of levity amidst all this chaos," I explained with a faint smile.
With a final nod, Marcus turned towards the door. "I should check in with General Hector and see if there are any updates," he said, his tone businesslike yet reassuring. "Matthew, Katharina, Aliceâstay here and stay safe. I'll be back as soon as I can." And with that Marcus left the room, closing the door silently behind him.
"So Matthew, do you always flirt with Marcus like that?" Alice playfully chimed in.
Her words hit me like a sudden jolt. My mind raced back to that forbidden moment in the garden with Prince Sebastianâa secret, a forbidden love that no one knew about. Panic surged through me as I tried to mask my inner turmoil.
Katharina's sharp intake of breath and her incredulous stare bore into Alice. "Alice, that's completely uncalled for," she rebuked, her tone sharp with disbelief.
I struggled to find my voice, torn between my secret and deflecting Alice's comment. "It's alright, Katharina," I managed to say, forcing composure into my voice. "Alice didn't mean anything by it."
Katharina's expression hardened. "How can you say something like that? Have some decency."
Alice's playful demeanour faltered as Katharina's accusation hit her. "Whoa, Katharina, I didn't mean anything by it. It was just a joke," she defended, sensing the rising tension.
"Don't joke about things like that," Katharina retorted sharply, her tone accusatory. "It's inappropriate and disrespectful. Just because you love in a disgusting way, doesn't mean my brother is similar to one of you"
"And how do you know about that" Alice asked, her eyes filling with fury. "Last I heard, the only people who knew was Prince Sebastian and Matthew"
Katharina's face paled slightly, caught off guard by Alice's bold response. She hesitated for a moment, searching for words, but Alice pressed on.
"So it was you who told" Alice said, now her voice raised a little.
Matthew, sensing the escalating tension, stepped forward, his voice calm yet firm. "Alice, Katharina," he interjected, trying to diffuse the situation. "Let's take a step back. Emotions are running high, but accusing each other won't help us right now."
"You're a scheming little bitch aren't you Lady Katharina" Alice stated.
"I had to say something, it was wrong what you were caught doing," Katharina retorted sharply, her voice laced with accusation.
I sighed inwardly, realising the situation was spiralling out of control. He stepped closer to Alice and Katharina, his presence an attempt to bridge the widening gap between them. "Katharina, Alice is upset. Accusations won't help us right now," he urged gently, his eyes pleading for calm.
Alice turned her gaze to Matthew, her anger still simmering. "But she needs to understand," Alice insisted, her voice trembling with emotion. "What she didâ"
Katharina cut in, her own voice rising defensively. "I did what I thought was right!" she exclaimed, her fists clenched at her sides. "I couldn't just ignoreâ"
"Enough!" Matthew's voice echoed through the room, cutting through the escalating argument. He looked between Alice and Katharina, his expression stern yet compassionate. "We're all on edge. But accusing each other won't solve anything. We need to focus on the dangers at present."
"Keep this bitch away from Matthew, or I'll do something I might regret" Alice spat, retreating to the far corner of the room, away from Katharina's presence.
I sighed deeply, feeling the weight of the rift between my sister and Alice. This conflict couldn't continue. "Let's take a moment," I said wearily, addressing both women. "We need to come together, not fall apart. Marcus will return soon, and we have to face whatever comes next as a team."
Silence settled heavily in the room as Alice and Katharina exchanged tense glances, their emotions still raw. I stood in the midst of it all, hoping desperately that they could find common ground before it tore us apart.
