Chapter 14: Chapter 14

The World Cannot KnowWords: 15634

Prince Sebastian

Why now, out of all the nights, did someone try to attack today? Being a prince always carried its burdens, but tonight's events had thrust that reality into sharp relief. The ballroom, which moments ago had been alive with the vibrancy of celebration, was now a scene of fear and confusion. I moved through the crowd, my eyes scanning for threats, my mind racing with the implications of the guard's death outside the castle doors.

The air was thick with tension. General Hector's sharp commands echoed through the hall, cutting through the din of clattering armor as the guards rushed to secure the palace. My focus was absolute; every detail mattered. The safety of my family and our guests weighed heavily on my mind. As I strode toward the perimeter, my thoughts were on Matthew and Katharina.

I knew he would keep her safe. Matthew—my confidant, my... more than that, really. The memory of our stolen moments together flashed through my mind, grounding me amidst the chaos. Was he safe? Had he managed to find Katharina and Alice? My heart clenched at the thought of him being in danger, but I couldn't afford to be distracted now. I had to keep moving, keep focused.

"Report," I demanded as I approached General Hector. His weathered face was set in a deep scowl, eyes scanning the grounds with the intensity of a hawk.

"Your Highness," he began, snapping a salute. "The perimeter is secure. We have doubled the guards on all posts and are conducting a thorough search of the palace grounds."

"Any leads on the assailants?" I asked, my voice steady despite the turmoil churning inside me.

"None yet," Hector replied, frustration evident in his voice. "But rest assured, we will find whoever is responsible for this."

I nodded, clapping a hand on his shoulder in silent appreciation. Hector was a man of his word, and I trusted him implicitly. But the unknown gnawed at me. What was their motive? Was it a random attack, or was someone targeting us specifically?

"Thank you, General. Keep me updated," I said, my voice firm despite the questions swirling in my mind. As I turned to leave, a steward approached, bowing hastily.

"Your Highness, the King requests your presence in the council chamber immediately," he said, his eyes wide with urgency.

I nodded and followed him quickly through the castle corridors, my thoughts racing. An emergency meeting at this hour could only mean something critical.

We arrived at the council chamber, the heavy oak doors already ajar. Inside, the atmosphere was tense. My father, stood at the head of the long table, his face etched with concern and determination. Beside him were Lord Gregory and Lady Isolde, the kingdom's chief diplomats, their expressions grim.

"Father," I said, entering the room. "What's the situation?"

King Alden looked up, his eyes softening slightly at the sight of me, but the worry remained. "Sebastian, we've received disturbing intelligence. Lord Gregory and Lady Isolde believe tonight's attack is part of a broader scheme."

"Indeed," Lord Gregory said, his voice grave. "We've been receiving reports of increased unrest among neighboring factions. There's been talk of dissent and whispers of a plot to destabilise the realm."

"Valoria, is possibly behind this?" I asked

Lady Isolde nodded in agreement. "It seems tonight's attack was not just an isolated incident. We suspect it's connected to a larger conspiracy aimed at weakening our position."

My mind raced, trying to piece together the implications. "So, what's the plan?" I asked, looking at my father.

King Alden exchanged a glance with Lord Gregory and Lady Isolde before speaking. "We must act swiftly. We cannot afford to show any signs of weakness."

Lord Gregory leaned forward, his eyes piercing. "We've decided that the marriage between you and Lady Katharina must proceed immediately. There is no time to wait. The union will solidify our alliances and send a strong message to our enemies."

I felt a surge of conflicting emotions. Marriage to Katharina had always been on the horizon, a future that seemed inevitable but distant. But now, thrust into the immediacy of the situation, it felt like a collision course.

"Father," I began, my voice measured, "marriage is a significant step. Are we sure this is the best course of action, given the circumstances?"

The King nodded, his expression resolute. "I understand your reservations, Sebastian. But this is a matter of security and stability. The alliance forged through this marriage could be crucial in deterring further attacks and maintaining the kingdom's strength."

Lady Isolde's voice softened slightly, adding a touch of empathy to the conversation. "We know this is sudden, but the stability of the realm must take precedence. Your union with Lady Katharina will bolster our defenses and unify our people."

I took a deep breath, trying to absorb the weight of their words. The duty I bore as a prince had always been heavy, but now it felt like a tangible burden pressing down on me.

"What about Katharina?" I asked, thinking of my sister and the impact this decision would have on her life. "Has she been informed?"

King Alaric's expression softened. "We have not spoken to her yet. We wanted to discuss it with you first, given the urgency. But she will understand the necessity."

I nodded slowly, understanding the gravity of the situation. "I will talk to her," I said, my voice steady. "She deserves to hear this from me."

Lord Gregory and Lady Isolde exchanged relieved glances, and King Alden placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Thank you, Sebastian. Your strength and willingness to lead in these trying times mean more than you know."

As I left the council chamber, my thoughts turned to Katharina and Matthew. How would they react to this sudden turn of events? The weight of responsibility settled heavily on my shoulders, but there was no turning back now. Duty demanded sacrifice, and tonight, the path before me had never been clearer—or more fraught with uncertainty.

With a deep breath, I made my way to find Katharina and Matthew, knowing that our futures were now more entwined than ever in the shadow of this looming threat.

...

I made my way through the quiet corridors, reflecting on the gravity of the information I had just received. Our intelligence suggested that the attack might be linked to Valoria, our powerful and ambitious neighbor. For years, Valoria had been a constant presence at the edge of our realm's politics—a kingdom with which we maintained a tenuous peace.

Yet, there was no concrete evidence, only whispers and shadows. Our scouts had intercepted messages suggesting Valorian involvement, but nothing was definitive. It could easily be a smokescreen, or the work of factions within Valoria acting without the king's direct command. The uncertainty gnawed at me.

As I approached the west wing, I found myself thinking of Matthew and Katharina again. The urgency of the situation left little room for personal contemplation, but the memory of my moments with Matthew and the duty I felt toward Katharina were anchors in the storm.

Pushing open the door to their room, I was met with a tense silence. Matthew stood protectively between Katharina and Alice, his face a mask of concern. Alice had retreated to a corner, her expression a mix of anger and worry, while Katharina looked defensive, her eyes darting nervously between us.

"Sebastian," Matthew said, his voice a mixture of relief and worry as our eyes met.

"Is everyone alright?" I asked, stepping fully into the room and closing the door behind me.

"We're fine," Matthew replied, though his eyes betrayed his unease. "What's happening out there?"

I took a deep breath, knowing the gravity of what I had to share. "The palace is secure for now," I said, trying to inject as much reassurance into my voice as possible. "But the situation is complex. We believe Valoria might be behind the attack, but we're not certain. There's no concrete evidence, just fragmented intelligence and speculation."

Alice's eyes widened. "Valoria? But they've always kept their distance. Why now?"

"It's unclear," I admitted. "We've had reports of unrest and increased activity at their borders. It's possible that factions within Valoria are pushing for more aggressive action against us."

Katharina's voice trembled as she spoke. "What do they want? Why would they attack us now?"

I met her gaze, feeling the weight of her fear and confusion. The truth was, we didn't have all the answers yet. "We don't know their exact motives, Katharina. It could be a show of strength, or perhaps they're testing our defenses. For now, all we can do is stay vigilant and prepare for whatever comes next."

Alice, still tense and clearly agitated, looked between us, her eyes wide with a mixture of curiosity and concern. "Sebastian, what are we supposed to do now? Just wait for them to strike again?"

I turned to her, sensing the urgency of the moment and the need for focused conversation with Matthew and Katharina. "Alice," I began gently but firmly, "I need to discuss something with Matthew and Katharina in private. Can you wait in the adjacent room? I'll come to you as soon as we're done."

Alice opened her mouth to protest but then seemed to reconsider. She glanced at Matthew, who gave her a reassuring nod, and then at Katharina, whose expression was equally pleading.

"Alright," she said, her voice subdued. "But don't keep me waiting too long"

"Thank you, Alice," I said, offering her a small, grateful smile. "I promise we won't be long."

With a reluctant sigh, Alice turned and walked out of the room, closing the door softly behind her. The air seemed to grow heavier in her absence, the gravity of the situation pressing down on us.

I turned back to Matthew and Katharina, my voice lowering to a more intimate tone. "There's something we need to discuss, and it's best if we keep it between us for now."

Katharina's eyes searched mine, her worry evident. "What is it, Sebastian?"

"It's about the future of our kingdom," I said, stepping closer to them. "And the role you, Katharina will play in it."

Katharina's eyes widened slightly, her gaze darting between Matthew and me. The weight of my words hung in the air, adding to the oppressive silence that followed Alice's departure.

"What do you mean?" she asked, her voice trembling just enough to betray her anxiety. "What role?"

I took a deep breath, gathering my thoughts before speaking. This conversation was not one I had anticipated having under such dire circumstances, but it was unavoidable now. "Our intelligence suggests that Valoria might be behind the attack," I began slowly, choosing my words with care. "While we don't have concrete evidence yet, the signs point towards them orchestrating or at least supporting this assault to destabilize our kingdom."

Matthew's brow furrowed in concern, his hand reflexively brushing against mine as if seeking a silent reassurance. "Valoria has always been a threat," he said, his voice low. "But they've never been this bold. What's changed?"

"That's what we need to figure out," I replied, my eyes meeting his. "But in the meantime, we must strengthen our alliances, through marriage and show that we are united and prepared to defend our realm against any aggression."

Katharina's eyes softened, but there was a flicker of apprehension. "So our marriage is just to form an alliance?" she asked, her voice tinged with uncertainty.

I took a deep breath, knowing the complexity of what I had to say next. "Katharina, your marriage is a vital part of our strategy," I began carefully. "But it's not just a political move. It's also about securing a future where our kingdom is safe and stable. I want you to understand that."

Her shoulders slumped slightly, the weight of our conversation settling heavily on her. "I always knew my marriage would be more about duty than love," she murmured, almost to herself. "But to hear it so plainly... it's difficult to accept."

Matthew stepped closer to her, his expression gentle and understanding. "Katharina," he said softly, "I know this isn't what you imagined for yourself. But your role in this is incredibly important. You have the strength and grace to bring about unity in a way that few others could."

Katharina looked up at him, her eyes searching his face for comfort. "But what about love, Matthew? What if I never find it?"

I felt a pang in my chest, my thoughts going to Matthew, "Katharina," I said, stepping closer to her, "I understand your concerns. And I promise you this: our marriage will be more than just a duty. I will strive to be a partner who respects and cherishes you."

She turned her gaze to me, her eyes filled with a mixture of hope and doubt. "Can you really promise that, Sebastian?" she asked quietly.

I nodded, holding her gaze with as much sincerity as I could muster. "I can. And I will," I said firmly. "We may not have chosen this path for ourselves, but I believe we can grow to care for each other deeply. We will build something together—something strong and enduring."

Matthew's hand tightened on Katharina's arm, a silent pledge of support. "Sebastian means every word," he added, his voice steady. "You'll have both of us by your side, no matter what happens. We'll face this together."

Katharina's eyes flickered between us, the tension in her posture slowly easing. "Together," she repeated, as if testing the word. A small, tentative smile touched her lips. "Maybe it's not so daunting if we're in this together."

I felt a surge of relief at her words. "Exactly," I said, smiling back at her. "We'll support each other, and we'll find our way through this. I promise you that."

She nodded, taking a deep breath as if drawing strength from our words. "Thank you, Sebastian. Thank you, Matty. I'll do my part."

I reached out and took her hand, squeezing it gently. "We all have our roles to play, and yours is crucial. But remember, you're not alone. We're with you, every step of the way."

Katharina's grip tightened around my hand, her eyes meeting mine with newfound resolve. "Then let's face whatever comes next. For the kingdom."

"For the kingdom," Matthew echoed, his voice filled with determination.

For the Kingdom, just his voice created a complex swirl of emotions within me. Katharina's resolve and willingness to step into her role, despite the personal cost, stirred a profound respect and affection in me. Yet, even as I looked into her determined eyes, my thoughts kept drifting to Matthew and the secret kiss we had shared.

Katharina's grip on my hand was firm and reassuring, a silent vow to face the unknown together. I admired her strength, her willingness to sacrifice for the greater good. But underlying this moment of unity was a truth I couldn't ignore—a truth that had become a persistent, bittersweet presence in my thoughts since that night with Matthew.

"For the kingdom," I echoed softly, my voice steady but my heart heavy with the weight of our intertwined fates.

Matthew's eyes met mine, a silent understanding passing between us. His support was unwavering, and I could see his commitment to Katharina and to me in that gaze. But there was also a shared acknowledgment of our secret.

With a deep breath, I turned my focus back to the present. We had much to do and many challenges to face. Whatever lay ahead, I would face it with Katharina and Matthew by my side. And in that unity, I found a renewed sense of purpose and hope. We would navigate the complexities together, for the sake of the kingdom and for our shared futures, no matter how uncertain or challenging they might be.
