It was another night of a welcome dinner for all the families being here. A pre-ball gathering as my mother called it. As the evening descended, the grand hall was alive with chatter and laughter. The flickering candlelight cast a warm glow over the room, illuminating the faces of the assembled guests. The long banquet table was adorned with exquisite silverware and fine china, a feast fit for royalty.
Seated at the head of the table, the King and Queen sat talking animatedly to everyone close to them. Their voices carried across the room, punctuated by laughter and occasional nods of agreement. With each gesture, they exuded an aura of warmth and approachability, despite their lofty positions.
My eyes went to look for the prince, hoping his lively presence would liven my mood after today's encounter with Alice and Elizabeth. It cetrianly left me feeling unsettled and conflicted. Guilt too. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything. I have put them in a situation that could be life threatening for them. On one hand, I couldn't shake the nagging feeling that there was more to their story than they had let on. But on the other hand, I couldn't deny the relief I felt at having avoided a potentially scandalous situation that could have risked the prince's future.
I wrestled with my thoughts, wondering if I had done the right thing by not pressing Alice and Elizabeth further. Had the prince let them off too easily? Or had he simply avoided unnecessary drama? The uncertainty gnawed at me, leaving me feeling anxious and apprehensive about what the future might hold.
Turning my attention back to looking for the prince. My eyes travelled to him at back table seated next to Kathy. Their conversation seemed friendly, and a sense of foreboding washed over me. I think it was Alice and Elizabeth's situation. Kathy needed to stay away from them, especially Alice, who is content on finding out who told on them.
It was heartening to see them getting along so well. As I watched them laughing and chatting together, a twinge of something swelled within me. Watching them easily converse and the way the prince moved Kathy's hair from her face stirred a mix of emotions. There was admiration of their connection, but there was something that I couldn't quite shake off.
"They're taking a liking towards each other, aren't they?" Mother said, coming to stand next to me, her voice soft with observation.
I nodded, torn between the warmth of familial connection. "Yes, they seem to be getting along quite well," I replied, trying to mask any hint of inner conflict.
Mother glanced at me, her gaze perceptive as always. "You're pleased, aren't you?"
"Of course," I said, forcing a smile. "It's good for the kingdom if they get along."
She placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Indeed, it is. And who knows, it might lead to something more beneficial for all of us."
I nodded again, but the unease persisted beneath the surface. "Yes, it could," I replied, my voice tight with uncertainty.
Mother gave me a knowing look before turning her attention back to the scene unfolding before us. "Just remember, Matthew, alliances are forged in many ways. Sometimes, even through unexpected connections."
Her words resonated with me, reminding me of the complexities of courtly life and the strategic nature of relationships. It was a stark reminder that even matters of the heart were often entwined with political considerations and the greater good of the kingdom. Does Kathy really deserve this? She deserves someone who would cherish her, someone who would stand by her side through thick and thin. Being the Queen has consequences, and I can't help but wonder if Kathy would be happy in such a role or if the prince will be able to provide her with the love and support she needed. Would Kathy become another pawn in the endless game of political chess?
"Come now, Matthew" Mother spoke, placing a hand on my shoulder "Not all the women here are destined for the prince, lets introduce you someone."
Her words were both comforting and jarring. I looked at her, trying to read her intentions. "Introduce me to someone?" I echoed, unsure of where this was heading.
"Yes," she replied with a knowing smile. "It's high time you started thinking about your own future as well. There's a young lady from a noble family who I think you'll find quite charming."
I sighed, feeling the weight of her expectations. "Mother, I'm not sure I'm ready for this," I said, glancing back at Kathy and the prince. "There's so much happening already."
She chuckled softly. "There's always something happening, Matthew. But that doesn't mean you should neglect your own happiness. Come, she's waiting to meet you."
Reluctantly, I allowed her to lead me through the throng of guests, my mind still occupied with thoughts of Kathy and the prince. We approached a group of people gathered near the fireplace, and my mother stopped in front of a young woman I knew too well with striking features and an air of quiet confidence.
"Matthew, you know Lady Alice," my mother said, introducing us with a warm smile. "Alice, this is my son, Matthew."
Lady Alice curtsied gracefully, her eyes meeting mine with a hint of humour. "It's a pleasure to meet you again, Matthew," she said, her voice forcefully melodic.
I struggled to keep my expression neutral. "The pleasure is mine, Lady Alice," I replied, my words tasting bitter. Memories of what was discussed about her doing with another woman resurfaced, making it difficult to mask my discomfort. She had been involved in a compromising situation that I couldn't forget, and the thought of engaging in polite conversation with her felt like a farce.
Lady Alice's eyes sparkled with mischief as if she was aware of the turmoil her presence caused me. "Shall we catch up, Matthew? It's been a while since we last spoke."
Before I could protest, my mother interjected, her tone leaving no room for refusal. "Matthew, why don't you and Lady Alice take a walk in the garden? It's a beautiful evening, and the fresh air will do you both good."
I hesitated, glancing at my mother in silent plea, but her expectant gaze brooked no argument. "Of course, Mother," I said, forcing a tight smile. "Shall we, Lady Alice?"
Alice nodded, her smile widening. "Lead the way, Matthew."
As we made our way through the hall towards the garden, I could feel the weight of my mother's expectations pressing down on me. My thoughts remained tangled between my concerns for Kathy and the distaste I felt for Lady Alice. The moonlight bathed the garden in a soft glow, and the cool night air provided a brief respite from the crowded hall.
"Matthew," Alice began, her voice tinged with amusement, "you don't need to make your disgust so obvious."
I glanced at her, taken aback by her directness. "I'm sorry if I seem impolite, Lady Alice. It's just thatâ"
"Just that you heard something you weren't meant to," she finished for me, her tone light but with an edge of seriousness. "Believe me, Matthew, I am well aware of the rumors and whispers that circulate within these walls. But we all have our secrets, don't we?"
I nodded stiffly, unsure how to respond. The truth was, her unapologetic nature both intrigued and unsettled me. "It's not my place to judge," I said, though my voice lacked conviction.
Alice chuckled softly. "Oh, but we all judge, don't we? It's part of our nature, especially here at court. But let's put that aside for now. Your mother seems keen on us getting to know each other better. Surely, we can manage a civil conversation."
I forced a smile, trying to ease the tension. "You're right. Perhaps we should start anew."
She smiled back, a hint of genuine warmth in her expression. "Agreed. Tell me, Matthew, what are your thoughts on tonight's gathering?"
I hesitated, my thoughts still preoccupied with Kathy and the prince. "It's been an interesting evening, to say the least. There are many dynamics at play."
Alice nodded, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Indeed, there always are. And what do you make of your sister and the prince? They seem to be getting along quite well."
A pang of somethingâstabbed at me, but I pushed it aside. "It's good for the kingdom if they form a strong bond," I said, repeating the words I had told my mother earlier.
Alice studied me for a moment, her gaze piercing. "You care deeply for your sister, don't you?"
"Of course," I replied, my voice softening. "Kathy deserves the best. She deserves to be happy."
"And do you think the prince can provide that happiness?" she asked, her tone more serious now.
"I hope so," I admitted, the uncertainty clear in my voice. "But only time will tell."
Alice nodded thoughtfully. "It's a complicated world we live in, isn't it? Filled with duty and expectations, but also with the hope for something more."
I looked at her, surprised by the depth of her words. For a moment, I saw a side of Lady Alice that was different from the image I had formed in my mind. "Yes, it is," I agreed. "And sometimes it's hard to navigate."
She smiled again, this time more genuinely. "Well, Matthew, perhaps we can help each other navigate it. After all, allies are always valuable in this grand game of ours."
I couldn't help but feel a flicker of appreciation for her candor. "Perhaps you're right, Lady Alice."
"I can see that you are worried about your sister," she said, her tone softening with understanding. "It's natural to be concerned. But you must also trust that she is capable of making her own choices."
I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "It's just... I've always felt responsible for her. And now, with the prospect of her becoming queen, the stakes are higher than ever."
Alice nodded sympathetically. "I understand. But if it helps, I think the prince genuinely cares for her, even if it's just political for him."
This unsettled me. The prince genuinely caring for Kathy just for a political gain. I had always imagined Kathy being cherished by someone who could give her undivided attention and love, not someone whose affection was divided by the demands of the kingdom. Was I being overly protective, or was there something more to this unease?
"It's... it's good to hear that," I said, my voice betraying a hint of uncertainty. "I want the best for Kathy, truly. I just hope that in all the political manoeuvring, her happiness isn't overlooked."
Alice studied me for a moment, her gaze penetrating. "You don't sound sure," she observed, her tone gentle yet probing. "What is it you're truly worried about, Matthew?"
I hesitated, glancing away. "It's complicated. I just... I care about Kathy a lot. I want to protect her from any potential heartache."
Alice's expression softened, a knowing look in her eyes. "Matthew, sometimes we need to let go and trust that those we care about can find their own way. Besides, it seems to me that you have a deeper connection with the prince than you might realize."
I blinked, caught off guard by her words. "What do you mean?"
She smiled, a hint of mischief in her eyes. "I've seen the way you look at him, Matthew. There's a spark there, something more than just concern for your sister. Perhaps the political manoeuvring isn't just about Kathy's happiness, but yours as well."
I felt a flush creep up my neck, unsure how to respond. "I... I don't know what you're talking about."
Alice chuckled softly. "Oh, come now, Matthew. It's clear to me that you care for the prince, too. Maybe even more than you realise. And from what I've observed, the feeling might be mutual."
Her words left me speechless. The idea of having feelings for the prince, and the possibility that he might feel the same, was something I hadn't dared to consider. "This is absurd, what you're saying," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, disbelief colouring my tone. "You're imagining things, Alice."
Alice raised an eyebrow, her smile unwavering. "Am I? Sometimes the truth is right in front of us, and we refuse to see it."
I shook my head, trying to dismiss her suggestion. "It's not like that. The prince...he's friendly and nice and the main thing is he is being good to my sister. He's doing what is expected of him as a prince. There's nothing more to it."
Alice's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Is that so? Matthew, I've seen the way he looks at you. There's a difference between duty and the constant staring, his eyes are always travelling to where you are. And I think you're blind to the latter."
I felt a flush creeping up my neck, my discomfort growing. "You're mistaken. The prince is just... kind to everyone. He cares about his subjects, and that's all there is to it."
She sighed softly, her expression turning more serious. "Matthew, you can't ignore what your heart might be telling you. Even if you don't believe me, at least consider the possibility that there could be something more between you two."
I clenched my fists, feeling a mix of frustration and confusion. "This is ridiculous. Even if what you're saying had any truth to it, there's no place for such feelings in this world of politics and alliances. Two men, or two women cannot be together, ever, unless you want your head to be detached from your shoulders"
She let out a sigh, linking her arms with mine. That same tight smile appeared on her face again, though this time it seemed tinged with a hint of sadness. " I know it might seem far-fetched, but sometimes the most unexpected connections are the ones that are the most meaningful"
I couldn't skate the feeling of frustration and confusion coursing through me. I know what she is talking about, a connection that resonates with me, something that I would love to have one day, with my future wife. The idea of the prince being this person, just doesn't sit right. It absurd and wrong. Something that I think Alice wouldn't understand.
"Now, shall we rejoin the festivities?" She said, her happy smile back on her face.
Reluctantly, I followed her back into the hall, my mind still reeling from our conversation. As much as I wanted to dismiss Alice's words as mere whimsy, a small part of me couldn't shake this new feeling that she has just awoken. But for now, I pushed those thoughts aside, determined to focus on the present and enjoy the rest of the evening.
...
As we reentered the grand hall, the atmosphere seemed to shift, the energy pulsating with anticipation for the upcoming ball. The King's booming voice cut through the chatter, drawing everyone's attention to the front of the room.
"My dear guests," he began, his tone commanding yet warm, "I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for gracing us with your presence tonight. As we gather here in celebration of unity and prosperity, let us not forget the importance of tradition and the bonds that unite us all."
His words were met with a round of applause, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride at being a part of such a prestigious gathering. Despite my earlier misgivings, there was a certain magic in the air, a sense of possibility that hung tantalizingly close.
"And now, I am pleased to announce that the first night of the ball will take place two days from now," the King continued, his voice tinged with excitement. "It promises to be a spectacular event, filled with music, dance, merriment and most of all the perfect partner for my son. I hope to see all of you there, ready to revel in the festivities and forge new connections."
The room erupted into cheers and applause, the anticipation palpable as guests began to mingle and discuss their plans for the upcoming ball. I glanced at Alice, her eyes sparkling with excitement, and couldn't help but feel a surge of anticipation coursing through me as well.
"Matty!" Kathy called out, weaving her way through the crowd towards me. The prince was not far behind her. When she reached me, she whispered urgently, "What are you doing with Alice?" She tugged on my sleeve, pulling me slightly away from Alice. "You know what kind of woman she is."
I sighed, glancing back at Alice, who was now engaged in conversation with another guest. "Mother insisted I speak with her. It's complicated, It's not that bad, trust me"
Kathy's eyes narrowed with concern. "Just be careful, Matty. I don't want you getting caught up in something that could cause trouble."
"I appreciate your concern, Kathy, but I can handle myself," I replied, trying to reassure her. "Besides, there are more important things to focus on right now."
Kathy's eyes twinkled with mischief as she turned to the prince. "Prince Sebastian, my brother also wants to find someone during the ball," she called out, her voice carrying across the room.
Caught off guard by her response, I couldn't help but feel my face flush with embarrassment. "Kathy!" I hissed under my breath, my eyes darting nervously to the prince.
Prince Sebastian raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Is that so, Matthew?" he asked, a playful smile tugging at his lips. "I wasn't aware you were in search of a companion."
I shot Kathy a glare, but she only grinned innocently. "It's nothing," I said, trying to downplay the situation. "My sister is just being...enthusiastic."
The prince chuckled, his gaze lingering on me. "Well, the ball is an excellent opportunity for such endeavours. I'm sure you'll find someone suitable."
Just then, Alice joined the conversation with a sly smile. "Someone who you can wither underneath, right, Matthew?"
I shot her a sharp look, feeling my cheeks flush with a mix of embarrassment and annoyance. "Alice," I said through gritted teeth, "I think you're mistaken about my intentions."
There was an awkward pause between the four of us. Kathy and the prince stood uncomfortably, while Alice's eyes twinkled with mischief. I couldn't help but think back to the conversation in the gardens. The room suddenly felt very hot.
Kathy broke the silence first. "Well, let's focus on making this ball a success," she said with forced cheerfulness, trying to steer the conversation back to safer grounds.
Prince Sebastian nodded in agreement, his eyes flicking between Alice and me. "Indeed. There are many details to attend to. Let's not let distractions get in the way."
Alice, still wearing her mischievous smile, inclined her head. "Of course, Your Highness. I wouldn't dream of causing any distractions."
I took a deep breath, trying to regain my composure. "If you'll excuse me, I need some fresh air," I said, turning to leave the stifling atmosphere of the balcony.
As I stepped out into the cool night, the air felt like a balm on my heated skin. I wandered to the railing, seeking solace among the cool air and night breeze. The soft rustling of leaves from the trees provided a soothing backdrop, helping to calm my racing thoughts.
The prince and I, how absurd... I thought, grappling with the whirlwind of emotions stirred by Alice's insinuations. It was unthinkable. Did Sebastian's eyes lingered on me? Of course not. The very notion of two men harbouring affections for each other was enough to invite scandal and ruin.
I shook my head, trying to banish these thoughts. It was impossible. My duty was to my family and to the kingdom. Kathy's future depended on the prince's goodwill, and I couldn't jeopardise that.
I hadn't been there long when I heard footsteps behind me. Turning, I saw Prince Sebastian approaching, his expression concerned. "Matthew, are you alright?" he asked, his voice gentle.
I nodded, though my mind was still a whirlwind of emotions. "Yes, Â Just needed a moment to collect myself."
He nodded, and a silence fell between us. We both stood on the balcony, taking in the calmness of the night. The cool breeze rustled the leaves, providing a soothing counterpoint to the tension that had built up inside me.
"Since when did you become close with Alice?" the prince called out, breaking the silence.
I sighed, my thoughts still tangled. "It's not what you think," I replied, turning to face him. "My mother introduced us earlier this evening. She insisted we spend some time together. I think my mother sees Alice as a potential wife for me"
Sebastian laughed out loud, his expression a mix of amusement and surprise. "Alice? Your potential wife?" He shook his head, still chuckling. "Your mother certainly has an interesting way of picking matches."
I couldn't help but smile at his reaction, some of the tension easing from my shoulders. "I suppose she does. But Alice seems okay. She's a good lady, besides her interests and behaviour"
"Don't tell me you're taking a liking to her," the prince said, a playful glint in his eye.
I laughed, shaking my head. "No, it's not like that. She's interesting, certainly, but I don't think we're suited for each other. She's more of a... challenge than a potential match."
"Good, because Alice prefers breasts, which you don't have" He replied laughing again.
I joined in his laughter, the sound of our amusement blending with the rustling leaves. The tension that had been weighing me down began to lift, replaced by a sense of ease in Sebastian's presence.
The prince took a step closer, the distance between us narrowing. "You know, Matthew, if you really want a wife, I can help you find someone"
My breath hitched, the prince was so close. I felt the warmth of his presence enveloping me. "I appreciate the offer, Sebastian," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. "But I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet."
"You sure" He whispered, snaking his arm around my waste.
It was almost like he was taunting me and I couldn't quite ignore the rapid flutter of my heart in response to his touch. His proximity sent a jolt of electricity through me, igniting a longing I hadn't dared to acknowledge until now.
"I... I think so," I managed to murmur, my voice betraying the inner turmoil I was feeling. His arm around my waist felt both comforting and unsettling, stirring up a whirlwind of conflicting emotions within me.
Sebastian leaned in closer, his breath warm against my ear. "Remember we have a deal" he whispered, his words sending a shiver down my spine.
I swallowed hard, struggling to find the right words to respond. But before I could gather my thoughts.
"Matty" Kathy called out, startling us both.
I turned quickly, the sound of Kathy's voice breaking the spell that had enveloped us. Sebastian stepped back, his arm falling away from my waist as we both turned our attention to Kathy.
"Yes, Kathy?" I replied, trying to sound composed despite the tumult of emotions swirling within me.
She approached, her expression a mix of concern and curiosity. "I've been looking for you. Are you alright?" she asked, her eyes flickering between me and Sebastian.
Sebastian nodded, a polite smile on his lips. "We were just having a conversation, nothing serious," he said, his tone casual.
Kathy glanced between us, her gaze lingering on Sebastian for a moment longer than necessary. "Well, Mother is looking for you. Apparently one of her friend's has a daughter" she said, smiling a little
I nodded, understanding the implication of my mother's search. "Thank you, Kathy," I replied, trying to hide my reluctance. "I'll go find her."
As she turned to leave, I caught Sebastian's eye, a silent exchange passing between us. Despite the sudden interruption, the memory of his touch lingered, leaving me feeling unsettled yet strangely exhilarated. With a quick nod, I followed Kathy back into the hall, the weight of Sebastian's presence still lingering in the air behind me.
