Chapter 5: Shadows of the Past

The fire had barely been extinguished from the battlefield, and yet, the weight of what had just transpired still hung heavy in the air. The Southern pack had been driven off, but their presence left a bitter taste on the tip of Jungkook's tongue. His thoughts kept drifting back to Kyungsoo's words. Taehyung’s a rare prize. A valuable possession. The phrase echoed in his mind like a song on repeat, each note a reminder of how much Taehyung meant to him.

Jungkook turned to look at his family. Taehyung stood close by, holding their eldest daughter’s hand, her other hand clutching the tiny boy they’d just had—his heart thumped at the sight of his pups. His gaze softened. Despite the battle, despite the threat, they were all here. They were safe. For now.

"You did well," Jimin said as he approached, his voice strained from the effort of the fight, though there was a light in his eyes that only appeared when he saw his Alpha victorious.

Jungkook nodded, but his thoughts were still elsewhere. "We’ll never stop fighting for them, Jimin. I won’t let anyone take Taehyung from me."

"Nobody will," Jimin said confidently, laying a reassuring hand on Jungkook’s shoulder. "You have an entire pack behind you."

Jungkook’s jaw clenched. His pack, his family, had proven their loyalty time and time again. But this—this battle, this threat—it wasn’t just about proving their strength. It was about protecting the ones they loved.

In the distance, Taehyung seemed to be talking to their pups, his eyes soft and gentle as he reassured them that everything was okay. Jungkook watched him for a moment, his heart full of warmth and affection. But just as quickly, a shadow passed through his mind—the shadow of a past he wished he could forget.

Flashback

The wind had been particularly cold that day. Jungkook was only twelve years old, yet already, the weight of leadership hung on his shoulders. His father, the Alpha King, had been struggling with the politics of their pack. Rumors swirled about his stepmother, and it was clear that her intentions weren’t purely out of love for the family.

Jungkook had been training in the woods, alone as usual. His father had insisted that he get stronger—prepare for the day when he would lead the pack. But that day, the only thing Jungkook wanted was a break from it all.

Then, out of nowhere, Taehyung had appeared.

He had been five years younger, his laughter bright and carefree. Taehyung had always been the light to Jungkook's storm, the peace to his chaos. They’d been inseparable for as long as they could remember.

"Jungkook, you're training again?" Taehyung had asked, his voice teasing but concerned as he walked over to him. "Come on, stop being so serious. You’re starting to look like your stepmother. Maybe you’re turning into a battle-hardened Alpha after all."

Jungkook had scowled at Taehyung’s playful jab, but the moment their eyes met, something clicked in his chest. Taehyung was always there when he needed him. Always. And though they were still too young to understand the full meaning of their bond, Jungkook had known, deep down, that Taehyung was more than just his best friend.

Taehyung had been his comfort, his safe place. And in return, Jungkook had vowed to protect him, even if it meant facing down the entire world.

End Flashback

Jungkook blinked, the memory fading into the air like mist. His heart was still heavy with the past, but his mind refocused on the present. His family was everything to him now—his mate, his pups, and his pack. And he’d never let anyone harm them.

He looked over at Taehyung, who had finished speaking with their children and was now making his way toward him. The way his mate walked, with that same carefree energy Jungkook had fallen for all those years ago, filled his chest with pride.

"I’m glad you’re safe," Taehyung said with a soft smile, his voice the same as it always was—gentle, affectionate, and full of love.

"I’m always safe when you’re near," Jungkook replied, pulling him close, his arms wrapping tightly around Taehyung’s slender waist. Taehyung laughed lightly, but there was a flash of concern in his eyes.

"Don’t go starting something you can’t finish," Taehyung teased, his fingers brushing over Jungkook’s chest. "I saw how you looked at Kyungsoo. You’re not going to make a habit of killing every Alpha who looks at me, are you?"

Jungkook huffed, his wolf growling in response to Taehyung’s teasing. "If I need to, I will. They’ll learn soon enough that you’re mine, Taehyung."

Taehyung's smile softened. "I’m not your possession," he said quietly, but there was an unspoken understanding between them. "I’m your mate. And I’ll fight for you just as much as you fight for me."

Jungkook looked down at Taehyung, his heart swelling with love. "I know. I’ll never let anyone forget that."

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps caught their attention, and they both turned to find Jungkook’s stepmother emerging from the trees, her eyes cold and calculating. She had always had an air of superiority about her, as though she were the true Alpha of the pack, and her every movement seemed to ooze with control.

"Jungkook," she said, her voice sweet but insincere. "I’m so glad to see you’re safe. I hope this little skirmish didn’t cause too much trouble."

Jungkook’s jaw tightened, but he kept his composure. "Mother," he said, his tone stiff.

Taehyung, standing beside him, didn’t hide the disdain in his gaze. "Don’t call her that," he muttered under his breath, his voice harsh.

Jungkook’s stepmother, however, seemed unfazed. "Now, Jungkook, I’m not blind. I see the way your attention is constantly on that little omega of yours," she said, her words dripping with malice. "It’s a shame, really. You’ve already produced pups, but I think it’s time you considered expanding your family with someone of higher status. Perhaps one of my friends' daughters?"

Taehyung’s eyes flared with anger, and before he could say anything, Jungkook stepped in front of him, his expression cold and menacing. "I won’t stand for this, stepmother," Jungkook said, his voice low and dangerous. "Taehyung is my Luna. And no one will replace him. Not now, not ever."

For a moment, there was silence. Jungkook’s stepmother’s eyes flickered with something dark, but she quickly masked it behind a smile. "We’ll see about that," she murmured, turning on her heel and walking away.

Jungkook’s wolf roared inside him, but he held himself together. He couldn’t let her have that power over him anymore.

As he watched her disappear into the distance, Taehyung’s hand slipped into his, and he squeezed it tightly. "You’ll burn the world down for me, won’t you?" Taehyung whispered, his voice soft and full of understanding.

Jungkook smiled down at him, his heart swelling with love. "I would burn the world for you, Tae. And I’ll destroy anyone who dares to think they can take you from me."

And with that promise, Jungkook knew—no matter what the future held, he would never let anyone tear his family apart.

They would face everything together, as mates, as a family, and as a pack.
