Half of me is happy, and the other half is murderous.
St. fucking Monarchâs.
The air is tense in the security room as we stand by a round table, putting a map together. Demitri, Isabella, and I are trying to remember the layout.
Isabella points to the south side. âThereâs a courtyard here. Guards patrol every five minutes.â
Demitri gestures to the west. âThe outdoor shooting range. Itâs too close to the armory to breach from there unless we blow it up.â
âIsabella,â I say as I grab a pencil and lean over the map, âHow many guards are on the south side?â
She thinks for a moment. âIâd guess between ten and fifteen.â
I write down fifteen, then glance at Demitri.
âStationed near the shooting range?â he asks. âEasily double. Iâd prepare for thirty guards.â
Then he shakes his head, and it has me asking, âWhat?â
âThe guards arenât the problem. Weâll be able to get through the first line of defense.â His eyes lock with mine. âItâs the custodians Iâm worried about.â
âTwo always follow Madame Keller,â Isabella mentions.
âAnd thereâs Miss Dervishi and Mr. Yeoh, the instructors,â Demitri adds. âThey trained us. Theyâll be able to anticipate our moves.â
Fuck.
âWhere would the other custodians be?â I ask.
The last time I was at St. Monarchâs was almost two years ago, and I didnât pay attention to the guards.
âTwo in the hallway leading to Madame Kellerâs office and two near the armory.â
I write the numbers down. âWhen we breach, weâll have three highly fucking skilled people to deal with stationed by the armory, then two outside the office, and two on the inside.â
âAnd Madame Keller,â Demirtri adds. âDonât underestimate her. She might be old, but she can still fire a gun just as good as any of us.â
I take a deep breath and let it out slowly.
âBesides the first line of defense and the nine skilled people, weâll have to find a way to get through the fucking vault door that will seal them in the office.â I think for a moment, then say, âUnless we just blow that part of the building. Would the walls be steel-reinforced?â
Demitri shakes his head. âMaybe the back of the office where the cabinets with weapons are, but not the sides.â
Nodding, Isabella agrees, âDemitriâs right. After remodeling the castle, they kept the walls intact because of the historical artwork. The ceilings as well.â
âAt least we have that counting in our favor,â I mutter. I stare at the map. âFirst line of defense will easily be sixty men. Second line, Iâm guessing twenty.â
Demitri lets out a sigh. âFinal line of defense seven and a vault door.â
âNine,â Isabella corrects Demitri. âCounting my mother and Hugo.â
âYou shot Hugo during the attack, and Iâm pretty sure Demitri and I got shots in as well, so he might be out of the picture,â I say.
âLetâs count him just in case,â Isabella replies.
Lifting a hand to my face, I scrub my knuckles over my jaw. âAnd thatâs not adding the custodians and assassins in training.â
âWeâll have to take Nikhil and Sacha.â
I glance at Demitri and see the worry for Arianaâs safety if theyâre not here to protect her. âWeâll send Ariana to the island.â
Demitri nods.
âIâll leave Tristan with her,â I add to set his mind at ease.
âWhat about MJ?â Demitri asks.
MJ is Haileyâs custodian that my brother got her for protection. From what Carsonâs told me, sheâs good. âIâll talk to Carson. Hailey can join Ariana on the island.â
âMaybe we should leave them on Damien and Winterâs island. Cillian and their guards will be able to protect them better than Tristan.â
I begin to nod, knowing Winterâs personal guard, Cillian, is good and tough as nails. âGood idea.â I let out a heavy breath. âNow to figure out what kind of weapons weâre looking at.â
âA lot,â Isabella chuckles, shaking her head at the map.
Ariana comes into the security room. âTime for a break, guys. Come eat.â
I drop the pencil on the map, and when Demitri and Isabella follow Ariana, I glance back at the numbers I wrote down.
Worry gnaws at my insides like a fucking rat.
Iâll be risking everyone who means something to me. My friends. My brother. Demitri. Isabella.
Thereâs a chance some of us will die.
Closing my eyes, I contemplate calling the whole thing off and waiting Sonia out. She canât live there forever.
Demitri comes back into the security room. âWhat?â
I shake my head. âIâll be risking everyone I love. Soniaâs not worth it.â
Demitri places his hand on my shoulder, and we just stare at each other for a moment, then he says, âWe donât back down, Alexei. If we do, Sonia wins. It will make her stronger and you weaker.â
I let out a slow breath and lift my chin. âWe donât back down.â
ISABELLA
âHarder,â Demitri orders.
I shake my head. âIâll hurt you.â
âThatâs the point, Isabella.â His eyes are hard on me. âShow me what you can do.â
Weâve been sparring for the last hour, and it just doesnât feel right attacking Demitri. After all, weâre on the same side.
He lets out a breath, then says, âIf you manage to hurt me, itâs my own fault for not blocking you. Give me your all.â
âI need to know you can hold your own against Demitri, or I wonât risk taking you with me,â Alexei suddenly says.
I glance over my shoulder as he walks toward us. Crossing his arms, he stops on the side of the sparring mat, raising an eyebrow at me as if heâs daring me.
âOkay,â I mutter. Another thing thatâs frustrating is that I canât remember the training I received. I have no idea what I can and cannot do.
Suddenly Dimitri lunges at me, and twisting his body into the air, his leg darts out. Automatically, I dart forward, and grabbing hold of his leg, I pull my body up and manage to wrap my legs around his neck. I twist myself and flip him, and then we both crash to the floor, Demitriâs full weight knocking the air from my lungs.
âFuck yes!â Alexei shouts. âNow thatâs what Iâm talking about.â
Demitri rolls off me, letting out a chuckle. âGood move.â
I let out a groan as I peel myself off the mat. âYou weigh a ton.â
âAgain,â Alexei orders.
Glaring at him, I say, âItâs easy to stand there and give orders.â
He tilts his head and then begins to remove his coat. âOkay. You and me.â
I let out a burst of laughter. âActually, I meant you should go find something else to do.â
Alexei shakes his head as he removes his boots, and then he steps onto the mat. âCome on, babe. Dance with me.â
âRules first,â I say as I keep my eyes on him. âNot the face.â
âAnd not between the legs,â he adds.
âDeal.â
I dart forward and take a swing at Alexei. He blocks the blow, and then his fist connects with my right shoulder. Knowing he didnât use his full strength, it still stings.
Jumping back, Alexei shakes his head at me. âCome on, little princess. You can do better than that.â
I run, and jumping at the last minute, I grab hold of Alexeiâs shoulder, but as I swing myself into the air, he turns around and grabbing hold of my arm, he yanks me down, causing me to fall to the mat.
Rolling over, I push myself into a kneeling position, and then I use the back of my hand to wipe the sweat from my forehead.
Alexei crouches in front of me with a bottle of water. âTake a break. Demitri and I will spar. Watch us and memorize the movements.â
I take the bottle from him and nod, not feeling half as badass as heâs made me sound. Climbing to my feet, I walk to the side of the mat.
Demitri and Alexei face-off, and then Alexei smirks at his custodian. âItâs been a while.â
Demitri smiles. âTake it easy on me.â And then he attacks.
The bottle of water is forgotten in my hands as my eyes move to keep up with the two men. Neitherâs getting a blow in. It seriously looks like theyâre completely in sync with each other. I focus on their actions, and they feel familiar.
God, the fight will keep going until one of them grows tired. Only then will the other be able to get past the blocks.
Theyâre equally good.
Suddenly, Alexei manages to wrap his arm around Demitriâs neck, and twisting his body, he slams Demitri down on the mat.
Speed. Alexeiâs faster.
The two men chuckle as they climb to their feet, and then Alexei asks, âWhat makes you stronger than your opponent?â
âSpeed.â
âGood girl,â he says with a wink.
I toss the bottle of water at him. âGet off the mat so I can train with Demitri.â
Alexei catches the bottle then gives me a fake hurt look. âWhy not train with me?â
âYouâre faster. Iâd like to actually train instead of being on the defense all the time.â Then I smile at Demitri. âDemitriâs also more patient than you.â
âIâll leave the two of you to train then,â Alexei chuckles as he walks to where his coat and boots are.
I wasnât lying, Demitriâs much more patient than Alexei. Plus, heâs a good trainer, and his energy is calm.
We practice for another hour, and with Demitriâs guidance, I start to move faster, feeling more confident with every move.
When we take a breather, Demitri smiles at me. âYouâll get there, Isabella. You did well for your first day.â
âThanks,â I say breathlessly.
âSame time tomorrow.â
I nod at him. âOkay.â
When Demitri begins to walk away, I say, âThank you.â He stops, and when our eyes meet, I add, âFor training me. I really appreciate it.â
âYouâre welcome. Take a warm bath to relax your muscles.â
As he walks away, I stare after him before turning my attention to Alexei, whoâs been silently watching us.
âI like my instructor,â I tease Alexei.
Instead of getting jealous, he gives me a pleased smile. âIâm glad to hear that. Demitriâs very important to me.â
âYouâre the best assassin and clearly trained in fighting. Why did you get a custodian?â
Alexei glances to the doorway where Demitri disappeared through. âI needed someone I could trust one hundred percent.â
Frowning, I say. âBut you have Carson.â
Alexei shakes his head. âEven brothers can turn on each other. A custodian is loyal until death.â
Nodding, I walk closer to Alexei. âWell, Iâm glad you have Demitri.â I smile up at him. âAnd me.â
He just stares at me for a moment. âDo I?â
The smile fades from my face. âOf course.â
Alexei holds the bottle of water out to me. âDrink before you dehydrate.â
I take it from him and swallow a couple of sips while a weird feeling slithers through my heart.
Alexei doesnât trust me.
