Chelsea, Jacob, and his little sister Jo played a card game on Chelseaâs bed while waiting for dinner. The smell of roasted turkey and stuffing filled the house, and Thanksgiving decorations made the place feel cozy and warm.
âCome to dinner, everyone!â Parley called out.
âWoo!â Chelsea cheered. Jacob dropped his cards and wheeled her into the living room, where they set up the extra-large table for the evening. Jo followed after, jumping as she went.
âHurry up, Jacob!â Jo said.
Jacob laughed. âHave a little patience, sis. Look, weâre here.â
Once everyone took their seat, Parley stood at the head of the table.
âThank you all for coming,â he said. âIâm so glad our families could be together this year.â
âHere here!â Jacobâs dad Owen said, raising his glass.
Parley tipped his glass in Owenâs direction and continued, âNow, itâs our family tradition to say what weâre thankful for before we eat. Family, friends, and medicine donât count. We all know youâre thankful for them!â Everyone laughed. âIâll start. Iâm thankful for modern cooking appliances.â

âThatâs what I was going to say,â Eleanor pouted with a smile as Parley sat down. She stood up and said, âFine then, Iâll say Iâm thankful for modern plumbing appliances.â She sat down with a smirk at her husband.
Jacobâs older brother Jimmy was next. He stood up, said, âIâm thankful for continuing education,â and sat back down.
Jacob patted him on the shoulder. âGood call, bro.â He stood up to take his turn. âIâm thankful for art supplies.â He sat down and said to Chelsea, âYour turn.â
Chelsea wobbly stood, much to everyoneâs surprise. She had to cling to the table to keep herself upright. âIâm thankful for books and comics.â She sat down quickly but gently, just like she was taught in physical therapy. When no one spoke, she said to Jo, âYour turn.â
âOh, right,â Jo said, startled. She stood up and said, âIâm thankful for⦠cameras! Yeah. And music.â She smiled at her mom as she sat back down.
Jacobâs mom Aubry stood up. âIâm thankful for the townâs protector Phantom.â
Owen stood before Aubry sat all the way. âAnd Iâm thankful for football!â Everyone laughed as he sat down with a satisfied smile.
âThank you for indulging in our tradition,â Parley said. âNow, dig in!â
