As we all ran through the maze, I tried to ignore the pit of guilt in my stomach. I tried to ignore all the thoughts that drowned my mind, how could I be with Wicked? I didn't have any memory of it whatsoever, so why did Thomas? And Teresa?
Jealousy started to overwhelm me, but I forced myself to focus on the maze. All that doesn't matter now, we all just had to focus on escaping once and for all. I held my spear as tight as I could, my sweaty palms making the wood almost slippery under my grip.
I ran next to Thomas, who was in the lead, taking all of us to exit. I had barely any idea where we were all going, but Thomas and Minho remembered exactly, which definitely made me feel even more hopeful that our chance of escaping was getting bigger.
Running around each wall, the maze twisting and swirling in my eyes, making me feel almost dizzy, but I ignored it and ran harder. I felt my legs burning as I ran as fast as I could, slowly passing Thomas and Minho now.
Before I could do anything though, I felt a hand grip my wrist and pull me back. My eyes widened with surprise when Thomas pulled me back, I hadn't noticed that everyone was standing behind a wall. I stood beside Thomas, his hand still on my wrist, sending tingles all throughout my body. I glanced down at his veiny hands, his fingers lingering against my skin, brushing softly as his grip loosened until he finally let go, not taking his eyes off me.
"Look." He whispered, nodding his head to something behind me. I turned around the corner of the wall, my back stuck to the stone like glue. Peering around the corner with my eyes, I noticed a griever pacing in front of some sort of vault door.
Fear tugged at my chest, making it feel like it was difficult to breathe. I looked back at Thomas, who nodded encouragingly, his gaze darkening with determination. I took a deep breath, a part of me wishing his hand were still on my wrist, but I couldn't think about Thomas's touch, and how it made me feel, and what I wanted to--
"Grievers?" Chuck's words interrupted my thoughts just in time. Thomas looked down at Chuck and nodded slightly, his lips drawn in a thin line, like he was finding it difficult himself to actually follow through with the plan.
Everyone let out a shaky sigh as I glanced around, hoping that maybe there could magically be another exit. The vines that stretched across the stone walls seem to sway ever so slightly in the distance, the thin steel walls closer to us had remained still, while the tunnel that was God knows how high, was a grievers den.
What happens if we actually escape this place?
"We got this." Thomas spoke with confidence, though the glimmer of guilt shone through his eyes that there was a definite chance we wont be able to get through this alive. But like Thomas said, I'd rather die trying then be trapped forever. If only Gally had followed us in, perhaps we would have a bit more hope in even just a few more numbers.
"Ready?"
Everyone nodded their heads, and Thomas clang his spear on the ground and turned around the corner and was already charging at the Griever, screaming a challenge. Everyone quickly followed, including me, as we ran around the corner, holding our weapons tightly. A rush of adrenaline drowned me and I ran even faster, screaming as the griever came charging at us.
Once the grievers was close enough, I dug my spear through his hard wired chest and setting my foot into the ground, causing the griever to flip over and landing in front of everyone who was attacking it ferociously. I stood up quickly, and glanced around desperately, looking for Teresa and Chuck who were in charge of unlocking the door.
I spotted Teresa grabbing Chuck from falling down the edge just in time, relief washed over me until I noticed a robotic leg clinging onto the edge, getting closer and closer until they reached the top. Alarm rushed through my body as I screamed for Teresa and Chuck to hurry at the door.
Teresa and Chuck raced towards me just as everyone was able to push the grievers off, until two more grievers appeared, their shrieking making my ears ring as Teresa desperately pressed buttons on the door.
"Eight numbers." She muttered in disbelief, my eyes widened, and I turned to the fight, seeing as Thomas and Minho were barely able to keep the grievers away from them.
"Thomas!" I screamed, immediately catching his attention. Worry and alarm was gushing through my body, would we all make it out okay? Would we die horribly?
"Minho! Eight numbers!" Thomas yelled over at Minho who was barely grasping the spear in his hand from the grievers jaws. As Minho began to scream the numbers, a third griever came out of nowhere, shrieking at us three. I glanced at my spear that was in my hands, and I looked at the grievers, eyes cold and lifeless.
"Thomas!" I screamed when I saw Thomas faught off the griever, as soon as my mouth opened I noticed Thomas spun around and faced me, looking back and forth at the griever. Instantly, he ran towards it and speared it in the side, attempting to push it over the edge that it was barely hanging on to.
Quickly, I stabbed the spear in its eyes and pushed it further down, the screams echoing in my ears traumatically. I screamed, letting out all my strength into pushing down the griever. With a deafening shriek, the griever was falling down just as Teresa yelled the door was open.
"Hurry!" Thomas yelled, rushing towards the door to aid everyone in pushing back the grievers from following us. We all ran backwards, fighting with every strength in our body to push back the grievers as the door slammed down blocking them all except for one. Just before the final door slammed down, the grievers would be stuck with us, and that was not a fight we were willing to take.
Abruptly, Thomas threw his spear at the face of the grievers, sending it tumbling backwards, giving us a solid second for the door to finally slam down on its body, crushing it easily.
Heavy pants were all around us, as we slowly faced the final door behind us, turning the knob slowly and walking in. Thomas walked cautiously beside me, Teresa no where in sight, I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with relief and happiness that we were one step closer to getting out of here.
Thoma's fingers suddenly brushed my hand ever so gently, I glanced at him, seeing as he was continuing to walk along everyone. I felt overjoyed, that I didn't even care if Teresa was anywhere, or Newt. Right now, I just gently wrapped my fingers around his long fingers tightly, holding his hand as we walked along a hallway lit up with lights all along.
I caught Thoma's glance at me, and my face grew red when I smiled softly at him, my heart pounding with butterflies. My stomach fluttering with excitement. Since I had been in the maze, there had been a lot of drama, that I had barely known what was going on myself. Between Thomas, Newt, Minho, and Teresa, it was all such a blur.
We all slowly looked up to a quite simple, yet modern looking door, with the sign over it labelled exit. Frypan just raised his eyebrow in surprise. "Seriously?" Still holding Thoma's hand, we walked through the door to some sort of lab.
I followed beside Thomas, not wanting to let go of his warm touch, everyone spread out, lost with words on how to describe this place. Glass was shattered everywhere, blood splattered all along the walls, bodies laying motionless, I felt cold to the touch.
What happened here?
