Chapter 53 Hanging up, Harry turned to Joseph and said smugly, âDirector Harrison told me that Nathan Cross has no other backer other than Thomas Dunn. Luckily, I know for a fact that Dunnâs father has recently passed away. This means that heâs gone back home to handle the funeral. He wonât be coming back anytime soon.â
Josephâs eyes narrowed as he smirked widely. âThat means that Nathan Cross will be alone and unprotected. Perfect! Mr. Leigh, looks like you can go all out when you teach those two wretches a lesson.â
Laughing boisterously, Harry replied, âDonât worry, Mr. Myers. Iâll definitely make them regret ever crossing you.â
âMake sure to let them know that Iâm the one behind their suffering. I want Penny Smith to come crawling as she begs me for mercy.â
âGot it!â
With that, Joseph promised Harry that he would reward him thirty million upon getting the job done.
Incentivized, Harry called his right-hand man, Carl, over the next day.
Listening closely as his boss instructed him Carl nodded. âOkay, boss, I understand. Iâll get it done.â
Today was a weekend, so the Cross family had decided to take a hike up Mount Blanc. Other than Nathan, Penny, and Queenie, his in-laws were coming along as well.
The family was having fun in the park near Mount Blanc when Penny received a call from Bob Hoffman, the head of the construction team.
The manâs voice was panicked as he cried out, âPresident Smith, somethingâs happened!â
âBob, calm down! Tell me, whatâs happened?â
âWhen our demolition team was transporting the waste materials from the construction site, we were stopped by a group of people. Not only that, but the rest of our trucks were also forcefully detained by them. When the drivers tried to reason with them, they got beaten up for their troubles.â
Penny frowned. âWho are these people and why are they blocking our trucks? Who gave them the right to detain our trucks and hit our people?â
âThey say that theyâre residents on that street and theyâve accused us of destroying their road with our heavy trucks. They also blamed us for dropping a lot of trash and other waste materials as weâve gone past. Thatâs why theyâre forbidding us from using it. They say that if we dare to use their road again, theyâll damage our trucks and beat up our men.â
Bewildered, she asked, âWere our trucks going against regulations? Did they overload or not put a tarp on?â
âMost definitely not! Iâm very strict about enforcing these workplace regulations. Besides, I donât think these men look like residents of the street. They actually look more like thugs looking to cause some trouble. Boss, what do we do?â
âIs there any way that we can avoid that road in the future? As for the injured drivers and the detained trucks, maybe I could go negotiate with these people?â
Bob sighed as he replied, âNope. We definitely have to go past that area if we want to reach our construction site; thereâs no way to avoid it.â
Penny furrowed her delicate eyebrows. âHave you called the police?â
âWe did, but they donât seem to be coming anytime soon. This is some tricky business, boss. If we donât settle this soon, weâll not be able to continue with the demolition and the trucks wonât be able to transport them away.â
âAlright, Iâll head over there immediately.â
Noting the troubled look on Pennyâs face as she hung up, Nathan asked gently, âDid something happen at the construction site?â
She answered with a bitter tone in her voice, âYeah. Some thugs are causing trouble. Theyâve detained several of our trucks and have beaten up some of the drivers. Theyâre also refusing our trucks future passage. If we donât resolve this quickly, the project will have to be put on hold.â
A calm expression on his face, he offered, âIâll go with you!â
She nodded.
Leaving their daughter in the care of her grandparents, the two of them hurried to their car.
As they neared the road leading to the construction site, they saw a convoy of trucks parked at the intersection. Around thirty thugs were standing nearby with arrogant smirks on their faces. Bob was currently trying to reason with their leader, a man with curly hair.
Carl gave Bob a hard slap across the face, shouting, âWho the hell do you think you are? Iâve already said that none of your trucks are allowed to go past here in the future; otherwise, Iâll trash every truck and beat up every man I see.â
