Special Agent Laurens is late. I check my phone again. She was supposed to be here twenty minutes ago.
âItâs all right, Harley.â Zack pats my hand across the table. Special Agent Laurens didnât want me going down to the field office, and itâs over an hourâs drive to her office in the city, so we found a spot halfway to meet.
âWhat if she thinks Iâm lying?â I ask, leaning back against the hard back of the chair; itâs one of those that are connected to the chair beside it and the table. The Rueben sandwich I ordered sits untouched in front of me.
âShe wonât. You need to eat something; you havenât eaten all day.â He pushes the red plastic basket at me. His sandwich, ham and Swiss on rye, is nothing but crumbs in his basket. The homemade chips are all gone, too.
âIâm too nervous,â I say, but I pick up a chip and nibble on the edge of it. âSheâs been nothing but nice. Why would you think sheâs not a good cop?â
He lifts a shoulder and wipes his hands on the paper napkin. âEven good apples can have a few bruises.â
A ring of the bell over the front door draws my attention.
âItâs her.â I sit up straighter, taking a deep breath.
âItâs all right. You remember what to say?â he asks, moving his things to my side of the table and sliding into the seat beside me.
âHarley. Hi.â Special Agent Laurens smiles when she steps up to our table. I scoot out of the chair and greet her with a short hug. Itâs how Iâve always greeted her. Changing now would be weird.
âHi. This is my friend, Zack.â I gesture toward Zack who is watching her with an interested eye, but he schools his fierce expression into a warm grin.
âHi. Nice to meet you.â He stands up and offers his hand.
She shakes it, keeping her eyes trained on him. An FBI agent has to know when someoneâs lying to them.
How am I going to get through this without her calling me a liar?
âIâm sorry Iâm so late. Traffic was heavier than I expected getting out of the city.â She drops into the chair where Zack had been sitting.
âNot a problem. Do you want a sandwich?â Zack offers in the gentlest tone Iâve heard him use.
âNo, no, thanks, though. I have to get back. Itâs a bit hectic. I hope it wasnât too much trouble meeting here.â She smiles at me, folding her arms so her elbows lean on the table.
âNo. No trouble,â I assure her. âThanks for taking the time. Itâs nothing mind blowing, but I thought you should know about it.â
She nods.
âOf course. Anything you can remember would be helpful.â Her eyes wander to Zack. âI assume sheâs told you about what happened?â
âShe has.â He lays his arm over the benchâs back, behind me. âHorrible.â
Special Agent Laurens nods. âIt was.â Her lips pinch together. âWhenever youâre ready. Take your time.â
I nod. Weâve been through this before. Usually, I have nothing for her, and we spend a few minutes talking over whatâs been done so far. Then we end it, and she leaves.
But today is different.
âThe nightmares started up again a month ago.â They never completely stop, they just leave me alone for a little while before thrusting their ugliness into my life again.
âAll right.â She leans forward, really paying attention. Sheâs always given me the sense that, no matter whatâs happening around us, sheâs completely homed in on me. She never gets distracted by a phone call or some other conversation. Iâm the only one sheâs listening to.
âWell, when I woke up from one the other night, I started thinking about things andâ¦â I blow out a breath. Zack rubs my back with his hand. A simple touch that transfers his strength right into me.
âI remembered a name,â I say. âArtie.â The name pops out of my mouth before I can stop it.
Zackâs hand freezes.
This isnât the information he wanted me to feed her. But it just came out.
âArtie?â Special Agent Laurens sits back in her chair. âJust that name?â
I nod. âYeah. Just Artie.â
She stares at me a long moment, her expression unreadable.
âIâm sorry. I know itâs not much.â My shoulders sag. Itâs too late now to tell her the lie I was supposed to tell her. It wonât make sense, and she wonât believe me.
âNo. No itâs good.â She pulls her phone out and taps away on the screen. âA name is more than we had before.â She smiles up at me. âIâm gonna make a note here, and then when I get back to the office, I can go through the file again. Maybe thereâs something there.â
âGood.â I glance at Zack. Heâs watching Laurens intently, but his hand has moved to my shoulder. He gives me a little squeeze.
âDid you talk to your mom about the name?â Laurens asks. âDid she remember it too?â
âNo.â How could I have? It only just came to me. âItâs really hard this time of year for her. I didnât want to upset her more by bringing it up.â
âI understand.â She nods. âMaybe she mentioned it when everything first happened. If itâs in the files, Iâll let you know, and we can both talk to her at the same time.â
âYeah. That sounds like a good idea.â I nod with relief. Calling Mom out of the blue with this information will only make things more difficult for her. Sheâs been through so much, and this week is already bringing up all the horrors for her all over again.
âHow is she, otherwise?â
âOh. Good. She retired last year. Sheâs good,â I say. âI think sheâll miss the kids when we go back at the end of August.â
âThatâs right, you two taught at the same school, right?â she asks with a little laugh. âThat had to be a little weird, after sheâd been there for so long.â
I shake my head a little. âNo, not really. She liked having me there. Getting my teaching degree and then getting the job at her school really made her happy.â I sit a little straighter. It had been important to her, and that made it important to me.
âAnd how about the two of you? How long have you been seeing each other?â she asks, still typing away on her phone.
âNot long,â Zack admits.
She raises her eyes to his, her fingers still over the screen.
âYou still live in the same apartment as last time we spoke?â She moves her eyes to me.
âYeah.â I nod, tucking my hands beneath my legs. Iâm shaky all of a sudden. Her features havenât changedâsheâs still smiling slightly, and being friendlyâbut thereâs something darker about the way sheâs looking at me.
âAny big plans for the summer? You still teach elementary right, during the school year?â She finishes with the phone and tucks it away.
âNo, no plans. Just working at the bar and relaxing a little before I go back in August.â
She nods. âI still donât know how you can handle all those little kids.â She forces a shiver and a laugh. âIâd take criminals over little ones any day.â
Zack laughs, moving his arm from around me and pressing his forearms into the table.
âSheâs good at it though,â he says firmly. Thereâs no way he can know that, but it doesnât stop the pride from swelling in my chest.
âIâm sure.â Laurens smiles a little wider, but her eyes are saying something else. I wish I could read people as well as Zack seems able to. âYou still have my number, so if you think of anything else, you call me again.â
She gets up from the table. âTalk soon.â She smiles at me then hurries from the deli.
âSheâs quick. In and out, huh?â Zack watches her leave.
âSheâs always on a case,â I say. âIâm sorry. I was going to say what you told me to say, but out of nowhere, that name just popped into my head.â
âItâs fine.â He turns to me; his eyes soften when they meet mine. âItâs true, though? The name you said, itâs what you remember?â
âYeah.â I nod. âLike a bolt of lightning, just came out of nowhere. But itâs true. I remember it.â
âGood.â He brushes my hair from my face. âNow eat your lunch. Iâm gonna make a call and see if I can get any more information.â
âDo you still work for the government?â I pop a chip into my mouth.
He leans over, kisses my temple. âNot really. Iâll be right outside. Finish your lunch, or youâll get no dessert when we get home.â A deep crease appears in his cheek when he grins and then he winks.
âIâll eat,â I promise.
âSuch a good little bird.â
