âDad?â Breathing is an impossibility for a moment. âDad sold us to Jimmy?â
Vince shakes his head against the belt.
âNo. He sold your mother. I donât know all the details. Only that he took the loan âcause he was so sick, and he knew there wasnât anything after he died. So, he took the loan, put your mom up for collateral if he couldnât find a way to get a life insurance policy to cover him.â
âOf course they wouldnât. He was dying of cancer.â The knife in my hand becomes a lifeline, ready to plunge into him.
âThen how did her sister and her get caught up?â Zack questions.
âI donât know. I only know I was to get the three of them and put them up for auction.â
âBut Jimmy is the one that came that last night.â At least it seemed like night. When the garage door opened that last time, no sunlight poured in. It had to be night.
âI donât know.â His gaze flickers between me and Zack, like heâs trying to find out if thereâs any hope left of him surviving this visit. âJimmy makes the rules, I just do what Iâm told. Arthur holds the product until itâs ready to move. Thatâs his job.â
âAnd Dustin?â Zack asks.
âDustin was Arthurâs bitch; he does what Artie tells him to.â He winces as he tries to move against the binds.
âSpecial Agent Laurens works for Jimmy then, too?â Zack continues his questions. I move back to the metal surgical table and hop on top.
The knife Zack gave me clanks against the metal.
Dad sold Mom.
They were happy together. Mom loved him. Losing him had been soul crushing. I witnessed it. Even though heâd been so sick, and death was a reprieve when it finally came calling, she had held onto hope that some miracle would save him. She would have given up everything to save him, to have just a little more time with him.
Why would he do such a thing?
He was going to leave us with no mother?
âThe pension Mom just started getting.â I cut off whatever Zack is saying to him. âSheâs getting that because of something with Jimmy. What is it? Blackwood.â I look to Zack. âShe has a section in her binder, the one with all Dadâs paperwork has a tab labeled Blackwood.â
Zack takes a small step to the left so I can see Vince from where Iâm sitting.
âSome pension scam. Laurens said sheâs a beneficiary, so sheâs probably cleaning money for him.â He looks to Zack. âLook, Iâm telling you the truth here. Iâm giving you what you want. So just let me go.â
âLet you go?â Zack laughs. âYouâve admitted to selling girls to the highest bidder to be taken away by fucking monsters to have their way with them. You admitted to raping my girl. You admitted to helping Jimmy kill her sister. Youâve given me a lot of information. So, I wonât start cutting off body parts, but youâre not getting out of this fucking place alive.â
âJimmy killed that girl. Not me. Jimmy. I donât fucking kill people.â
Jumping off the table, I rush him with my knife back in my hand.
âYou donât fucking kill people?â I plunge the blade into his shoulder, then his arm, then his side before Zack yanks me off.
âShhh, little bird. Not yet.â He spins me to face him and wipes my face. Iâve started crying sometime after Vinceâs last stupid statement.
âHeâs lying,â I whisper. âHe killed me a little when he did those things. He killed Quinn when he did the same to her. He killed my family.â
Zack nods. âHe did, I know. Heâs going to pay.â Itâs a promise. He doesnât lie. Closing my eyes, I take a breath, then another, until the rage quiets in my mind and Vinceâs whimpering comes through.
âMan, sheâs crazy!â he yells.
Zackâs features darken. A quiet falls over him. âCrazy?â He turns to him, leaving me and walking over to him. âYou sell girls, and you think sheâs crazy for wanting you dead?â
Vince blanches. âI didnât mean to insult your girl.â
âInsult her?â Zack laughs, but thereâs no joy. Vince has opened the gate and Zackâs beast is coming out. âOf all the things youâve done to her, you think an insult is going to be the thing that gets you killed?â
âIâm trying to help you out!â Heâs panicking now, wiggling more and more, trying to get out of the ropes. But Zack ties a good a knot. There will be no escape.
âWe need one more thing from you.â I move to stand behind him. âYou said youâre picking up product tomorrow.â I put my hands on his shoulders. The tip of my knife brushes against the open wounds on his neck.
âWhere?â Zack asks.
âYou want to know that, you gotta promise to let me go,â Vince tries to bargain. A horrible move on his part. Zack doesnât make deals with monsters.
âYou are a stubborn prick, you know that?â Zack gives an empty laugh. âHereâs the deal. You like buying and selling things, right? You make your money doing that. So, hereâs what weâre going to do.â He turns and points at the digital camera he set up thatâs aimed at us.
âWhat the fuck is that?â Vince whispers.
âNothing yet. But Iâm gonna turn it on and then weâre going to take orders.â He points to the laptop sitting on a folding table next to the camera. âAnd when thereâs an order for your toe, Iâll cut off your toe. When thereâs an order for your thumb, Iâll take the thumb. Are you getting what Iâm saying here, Vince?â
Vinceâs chest heaves. âYouâre sick,â he whines.
âSick of you? Yes. Sick of the monsters in this world? Fuck yes.â Zack moves to the computer and turns it around so we can see the screen. âJust need to open the store. Looks like thereâs already about fifty fuckers in queue to sign in.â
âNow.â I squeeze his shoulders. âWhereâs the product, Vince?â
