âYou had to choose.â My tears soak my shirt. âAnd you let me believe all these years you chose me to survive.â
âYeah. I did.â She nods. âBecause how could I have told you differently?â
Silence stretches between us. I was never angry with her for choosing before. I knew she had no choice.
Was I mad now because it was me she chose instead of Quinn? How unfair is that?
âHarley.â She scoots closer. âHarley, Quinn was so injured, she wasnât going to live, even if we got to the hospital that minute. I saw what they did to her, honey. They hurt her so badly, there were so much internal injuries and blood loss. Baby, you didnât see all the blood.â She sniffles.
âShe was going to die anyway, but you still picked me to die too?â How much pain can the heart take before it just stops?
âWhat they did to you and Quinn. The trauma. Iâ¦â She leans back in her chair, tired and pained. âTheyâd hurt you so much, too. I thoughtâ¦I thought we would all be better off dead.â
I stare at her a long moment.
âI wasnât going to survive losing either of you, I figured if they didnât kill me, Iâd handle it myself.â She looks to Zack. âYou think Iâm a monster.â
Zack stays somber, silent.
âBut you told Laurens about my memory returning. She tried to kill me, Mom.â
âI know.â She nods. âIâ¦was scared. Jimmy was still making threats after all these years.â
âThe pension,â Zack pipes up.
âYes,â she explains. âHe said if I didnât help him with some money issue, heâd find Harley and finish what he started. I didnât understand what he wanted from me, so when those pension papers came, I showed Harley. Only, after she left that night, I understood. They would deposit the money into my account and then theyâd withdraw it.â
I lean back in my chair.
âHoney, do you understand? Do you believe me?â
I stare at her, exhausted and sick.
âI donât know.â
âI swear, baby, I swear I didnât choose you because I didnât love you,â she sobs.
âWhen I started to remember, you should have come clean about everything.â I get to my feet.
She wipes her face. âDoes she know you remembered everything?â she asks me.
âLaurens?â I ask. âYeah, she knew. Right before I killed her.â
Mom blanches. âHarley.â
âArthur, Jimmy, Vince, all of them are gone, Mom. No oneâs left that can hurt you now.â
âHarley.â She reaches for me, but I pull away.
âI canât,â I whisper, moving to Zack.
âYou need me?â he asks, keeping his eyes on my mother.
âNo.â I shake my head. âI think weâre done here.â I get the glass of wine Zack poured earlier and gulp it down. âWe can go.â
âHarley. Please.â
âNo.â I stop her from touching me. âI donât want to believe that youâre a monster. I know youâre not like them, but I donât know who you are, really. I canât pick everything apart to find the full truth here.â
I grab Zackâs hand.
âIâm done with this,â I say and walk out of the kitchen.
Zack follows me through the living room and out the front door.
We walk down the steps, past the rose garden, to his car.
I climb into the passenger seat and wait for him to get in the driverâs side.
âYouâre sure about this?â he asks as he turns the car on.
I grip my knees. âShe had horrible decisions forced on her. She has to live every day remembering what she did, her part in all of this. And at the end of it, I grew up knowing she loved me. Thatâs the truth I know. Itâs what Iâm going to hold onto.â
âTruth is truth, Harley. You donât have to choose to believe it, there is no choice.â
âI have you.â I look to him. âThatâs another truth.â
He softens. âYes. You do, little bird. You have me. Forever.â
âAll right, then.â I smile. âLetâs fly away. Together.â
