âCan you stay today?â Klara whispered to the blonde.
She nodded and sat, âDid you get picked at the ceremony?â Klara asked.
âYes, the movies are wrong⦠I wish I was a human.â she brought her finger to her bruised cheek.
Klara had been at the castle six weeks, five gloriously isolated weeks. Klara was gaining confidence and day by day her body was slowly morphing from an adolescent to a woman. Therefore, most of her wardrobe had to be changed to a size up. She had been to see the doctor the week before. He checked her weight and was impressed, he said she was nearly at what he would expect, sheâd also even grown an inch. She still wasnât completely sure on letting Marc in her bed, so they were still separate, although cuddled right up to going to bed.
Marc sank into the dining chair as Klara put the plates down. He had noticed the change in her, she wasnât a timid mouse any more. He knew there was still a journey ahead of them but he was proud as he looked up to her. A small smile on her face. They still only shared cheek and forehead kisses. But just seeing her coming out of her shell was enough in that moment. They tucked into their dinner. A nervousness bubbling within Marc with what he had to tell Klara. His parents had been driving him crazy.
âLittle oneâ¦â he spoke slowly, almost hesitantly. Klara looked up to his golden eyes. âMy parents want to meet you.â Klara instantly began scraping the skin from her lips. Mark leant over the table and gently tugged her lip from her teeth. âIâve been putting it off⦠I donât know how much longer I can keep doing so...â he said a little guiltily.
Klara nodded, âOK,â she gulped, âWhen?â
âErm⦠tomorrow night.â Her face dropped. âWade and Adelaide will be there too,â he rushed out.
âTheyâll hate me,â she whined.
âYou canât stay locked in the Kingâs Wing.â He stated gently.
âI go to Adelaideâs and the doctor,â she protested quietly, still a little scared of making him angry.
âI know darling.â He smiled gently, âBut⦠thereâs going to be more, youâre going to be Queen. Youâllâ¦â he trailed off. Klara looked down, pushing her half-empty plate away. She had an idea what he wanted to say. She wasnât a Queen, not the way she acted⦠But part of her knew she couldnât be his Queen, she didnât have a strong wolf and she wasnât a strong person.
Marc was nervous about Klara meeting his parents properly, he had selfishly kept Klara away, convincing his parents they were still in their honeymoon stage and getting to know one another. He wanted her to be comfortable and felt the more people around the less comfortable sheâd be. But slowly she was coming out of her shell which he was proud of.

It was the day Klara would meet them over dinner. He was nervous and when he was nervous he worked.
Marc riffled through the small pile of grievances that had landed on his desk that day, so far they were minor things others would easily be able to take care of. Wade bounded into the room looking much too happy, he stopped, a look of realisation crossing his features before his body language crumpled into panic. âAlright?â
âEr⦠yeah⦠I, erm⦠Iâm going to be a dad.â Marc stood, a smile creeping onto his face.
âHey, congrats man.â
âYeah,â he breathed.
âYou donât look too happy?â
âNo, I am⦠just⦠erm.â Marc went around his desk.
âThe more you panic the more Adelaide will feel it which wonât be good for the pup. Calm down.â
âI donât think Iâm ready.â
âIs anyone?â
âBut Iâm more a pup than⦠than Trey!â Marc chuckled and left Wade to his little rant of self-consciousness, grabbing alcohol from the next room and coming back â-How can she think Iâm ready⦠like⦠I agree I want a pup butâ¦â Marc forced a glass into Wadeâs hand.
âItâs a time to celebrate, stop panicking, you can panic later when heâs thinking heâs all grown and getting into trouble.â Marc tipped the glass that was sitting useless in Wadeâs hand. âDrink.â
Marc waiting until the amber liquor had disappeared, âJust told you, huh?â
âYeah, came straight here.â Marc chuckled, âOh goddess what if itâs a female? I can barely care for Adelaide!â Marc huffed and cuffed the side of Wadeâs head hard. âOw! OK, thanks man.â
âGoing to announce at dinner?â
âYeah, thought itâd take the pressure from Klara a bit, howâs she doing?â
âNervous.â

Evening rolled around and the six of them were sat around a grand banquette table, Marc squeezed Klaraâs hand as soup was placed on the table. Nervous didnât come close to what Klara was feeling. âSo Klara dear, how are you finding the palace?â Elsbeth, Marcâs mother asked. Klara looked across to Adelaide who glanced up to smile at her.
âItâs very grand, y-your majestyâ she responded quietly. Her hand shook as she grasped her spoon. She peeked up to the former King. He exuded so much power, she knew it was a similar power to Marc but the former Kingâs power was terrifying, particularly as he was scowling at her.
They finished the soup in silence. âSo,â The former King cleared his throat as he put his spoon down. âIs this all an act?â Klara blinked at him.
âFather, what do you mean?â Marc asked.
âThisâ¦â He waved in Klaraâs direction, âTimid, mousy⦠weakness,â he sneered.
âDaddy!â Adelaide snapped.
âSilversmithâs are tricksters darling, donât let her fool you,â he reasoned. Klara had dropped her head, swallowing hard. âFather,â Marc warned lowly, âSheâs been through a great ordeal.â
âIf itâs not an act sheâs not worthy.â He glared at Marc, âFind someone better,â he shot.
Klara wanted to disappear, she shrank in her chair as much as possible. âWould you have said that about me? Father?â Adelaide forced her last word with venom. âAfter what I fucking went through?â
âLanguage Adelaide,â he chided. âBut of course not, child.â
âSheâs been through fifty times what I went through. Show some fucking compassion,â she spat.
âAdelaide,â he growled. âCompassion is for those worthy. Not Silversmithâs, theyâre untrustworthy⦠scum. Youâll do well to be rid of her son.â
Klara whimpered.
âDarling, give the girl a chance,â Elsbeth stroked his forearm soothingly. âSheâs not her family, Xander.â
âTheyâre all the same,â he spat. âI bet sheâs not even announced loyalty to the crown?â he sneered. Marc opened his mouth and shut it again. âThought as much.â He wrenched his arm from his mate. âSheâll destroy you, my son, send her back,â and with those words he stormed from the room.
Elsbeth sighed as Xander left. âWhat the hell was that about?â Marc almost exploded making Klara flinch. Elsbeth exhaled, âThereâs been bad blood between your father and the Silversmith pack for decades.â
âThatâs not Klaraâs fault,â Adelaide folded her arms.
âNo, itâs not. Iâm sorry dear, please donât take it personally,â Elsbeth addressed the top of Klaraâs head. âWhat happened, mother? Heâs acting rash,â Marc asked.
âHeâs never been able to forgive, let alone forget.â Elsbeth looked over the younger wolves around the table. âKlara dear, my mate doesnât usually act this way.â Klara merely whimpered. Marc was going to send her back.
âElsbeth, whatâs made him so⦠prejudice?â Wade asked, clasping Adelaideâs hand.
âItâs not my place dear.â
âPlease maâma?â Adelaide asked, âPlease?â Elsbeth sighed, sipping on her water.
âVery well, Iâll start at the beginning,â she started.
