As the carriage rolled out we all carefully sprawled out inside of it, Luâs face never changing from a pouty scowl, like a kid who had their ice cream fall out of the cone but was too nervous to ask for another one. âAre you that mad that Airsidh tied your dress back on?â
She let out a soft growl as she slowly turned to him. âDo I have to wear it like this?â She whined.
âYes.â
She let out a breath of air from the side of her mouth, puffing out her cheek as she turned away again. âNo⦠Thatâs not why Iâm mad⦠Although it looks way cooler the other way⦠Iâm mad cuz I lost.â
I took a deep breath, stretching out my sore ribs. âWhat, did you make a bet or something?â
She scrunched up her face even more. âNo!â She yelled, before quickly calming down, her voice quieting even more than before. âMom said gambling was wrongâ¦â
I closed my eyes, unable to stop myself from smiling, despite her angry tone.
âGrama⦠She beat meâ¦â She bunched up her own hair, softly rubbing her head. âAnd Now my head Freaking hurtsâ¦â
âDonât use pointless words. Efficiency is always better.â Airsidh muttered, his voice showing how tired he was⦠Or maybe it was just all the swelling in his face.
She paused for a moment. âNow⦠My head hurtsâ¦â
âThere you go.â
âMy head hurtsâ¦â She said again, shortening it further. âHead hurts⦠Hurts⦠Pain.â
He rubbed his eyes. âThat might be a bit excessive.â
She pinched her eyebrows together just pointing to the bump on her head.
It was so cute I felt my cheeks turn red⦠Although I felt bad about it sense she was clearly not having a good time. It just made me want to hug her. âYou know, I think she has a point, I can tell exactly what sheâs trying to say.â
He sighed, his signature smile creeping subtly onto his face as he turned away.
âNo⦠Donât tease her, she already looks so sadâ¦â

âShe looks like she's asking someone to kiss it better.â
âJerkâ¦â I muttered.
She rolled her eyes. âMaybe Iâ¦â Her face suddenly took on a puzzled look, carefully contemplating her next words as she looked over to him out the side of her eyes, rethinking what she was going to say. âToo bad your face looks like it needs a bit more than just that to fix it.â
âIâm so proud. Sheâs growing up so fast.â
âAt least I can keep my clothes on.â
I let out a small growl, that drew his eyes for a split second.
âA-at least I⦠Look good without themâ¦â With every word her voice became more unsure and squeaky as she slowly looked to me, questioning whether or not she should have said that.
âYou canât say something like that so timidlyâ¦â I sighed, unsure of how to respond. It would have been a good comeback, but⦠The way she said it⦠And how embarrassed she lookedâ¦
Airsidh snickered. âI canât tell if teasing you is more fun or less fun after you two started hanging out more.â
âLu⦠If itâs that embarrassing then donât say itâ¦â
Our brother sighed, staring directly at me. âAnd⦠Donât brag about your naked bodyâ¦â
Lu scrunched up her shoulders as if trying to hide. âS-sorryâ¦â
âWhy is he staring at me!â âOh come on, you really think I could say something like that if she can barely do it?â
âYou have a tendency to be⦠Inconsistentâ¦â
I growled laying down on the bench and kicking my feet up. âIs that true? No, Iâm not⦠What does that even meanâ¦â âMaybe Iâm consistent, and you just havenât seen the full pattern yet.â
âItâs pretty easy to tell when the book you read suddenly gets a few extra pagesâ¦â
I rolled my eyes, no longer bothering to look at him. âYeah, itâs called volume two.â
âRight, volume two⦠Only about different characters, in a different setting, and itâs completely unrelated.â
âVolume two can be whatever I want, Iâm the author.â âWhat are we even talking about⦠I feel like this metaphor kind of fell apartâ¦â
He sighed. âToo bad your book is filled with typos.â
âA book with typos is better than a paragraph with a fancy cover.â
âOnly if the paragraph is bad.â
âYOU GUYS!â Lu suddenly whined. âYou're making my head hurt even more!â
âDonât worry lu⦠Iâm pretty sure neither of us understood the metaphor anymore eitherâ¦â I sighed standing up and crossing over to sit next to her, wrapping an arm over her shoulder. âTry to relax the muscles in your neck and head, just lean on me. I get to be your pillow this time.â
She let out a small groan as she rested her head on my chest. âYou're too small⦠I feel like Iâm going to squish you.â
I was suddenly reminded of that one emoji, the smiley face with the single tear hanging from the eye, a perfect metaphor for how I felt at that moment. I looked over to Airsidh, who was just grinning as always. âYou better not say anythingâ¦â He just shook his head and turned to look out the window. âOk⦠But now Iâm mad you knew what I was thinkingâ¦â
Lu slid down with another groan until her head was resting on my lap, pulling her feet up before finally relaxing.
âI thought you felt like you were going to squish meâ¦â
She groaned again, not so much as opening her eyes. âNow sleep, big sis teas laterâ¦â
I felt my body stiffen up. âBig sis? Why did that feel so goodâ¦â
As she relaxed she started kicking Airsidh as she tried to stretch out. Eventually, he just moved to the other side of the carriage. He must have still been in pain, but he moved without a word just so she could get better rest⦠No matter what he said his actions spoke for themselves in a way⦠Well⦠Or he was just tired of getting kicked.
âNice going, big sisâ¦â He said with a groan and a smile as he sat down.
It almost sucked all the joy out of it. âIt feels so wrong when you say itâ¦â
