Chapter 29: Cajole
The hallway was chaotic as Byron examined Candiceâs injuries, which were critical to the chest.
He instructed the nurse, âBandage it and proceed to surgery immediately.â
âProfessor Wilsonâ¦â Candice called out breathlessly.
Byron moved closer to the stretcher and leaned forward.
âIâm here,â he reassured.
âI have medical insuranceâ¦â She was really struggling to speak as her voice kept trailing off.
âAt home.â
He frowned and checked her temperature to find that she wasnât running a fever.
âRufus hit me,â
Byron sulked.
She grabbed his hand and said, âMy mom canât afford to be
scared, so Iâll hide it from her for now, and Iâll pay for it myself⦠For the settlement, please make some concessions. and later Iâll.:
His former trauma was suddenly triggered.
âWhy are you still considering the issue of money at this juncture?â
Candice froze and closed her eyes.
She was half conscious.
Byron also realized that he had been too harsh.
She didnât mean it the way Vicky did.
Vicky wouldnât care about this money anyway. She had the means to get money out of menâs pockets.
He suppressed his emotions and said, âIâll settle for you.â
Candiceâs eyelids twitched.
The stretcher was sent into the operating room, and Byron went straight to the orthopedic department next door to get Samson Barnes, who was the leading expert in this field.

âDoctor Samson.â
Samson was almost off duty and was writing some medical records.
He looked up and asked, âDoctor Byron, whatâs the matter?â
âThereâs a patient in the emergency room with a fractured sternum.â
âDoctor Miles is taking my shift at four and heâll schedule the surgery.â
Byron didnât say a word and stood in place.
Samson immediately understood what he wanted.
âMale or female?â
âFemale, 24 years old.â
âYour girlfriend?â
âPretty much.â
Samson got up and said, âIâll perform the surgery myself.â
Chapter 29 Cajole
âI owe you one, Iâll pay you back sometime.â
He stopped and said, âDoctor Byron, gossip is scary. My wife and I are going to have a second child, and Iâm not infertile.â
No sexual impotency issues in his forties.
It didnât seem believable.
When a man is of a certain age, they are bound to be plagued with issues in that area, more or less.
Some were just too prideful to admit.
The urology and male fertility department was known to be the gossip warehouse of the hospital.
Harry knew about every single colleague who had gone to other hospitals to seek treatment for piles or other male sexual health issues.
He would then go on to tease them at work.
As a result, Harry had set the record of receiving six free meals in a day as âhush feeâ.
âCome to me for treatment. Iâll keep it strictly confidential,â Byron said to Samson before leaving.

The next day at noon, the first thing Candice did when she woke up was to ask, âWhereâs Patrick?â
She clearly remembered the scene where Rufus smashed the chair into him.
He had flung it with all his might.
Harry clucked his tongue and said, âHave you developed feelings for Patrick after surviving an ordeal together?â
Candice said, âPatrickâs petty.â
âDoctor Byron is even more petty than he is.â
Harry moved to the side while Byron walked past the door, followed by a group of interns who, by the looks of it, were visiting her after checking in with the menâs ward on the seventh floor.
ww
The rich white sunlight shone on him, as clear as snow and giving off a unique vibe.
âSheâs concerned about that punk, Patrick,â Harry jested.
Byron said with an expressionless face, âHeâs got a fractured scapula, but itâs not life-threatening.â
Chapter 29. Cajole
After that, he walked away.

Candice thought that this time, Patrick would definitely extort her to no end.
After all, it was her ex-husband who was the cause of the accident.
The most important thing was that Patrick didnât take advantage of her yet was implicated by her. He definitely couldnât take it lying down.
Sure enough, a battle was started that day.
Patrickâs wife came to the hospital aggressively, cursing all the way from the elevator to the ward. If the nurses hadnât stopped her, she would have slapped Candice.
Something so serious cropped up right after they got remarried. Who could tolerate that?
Knowing that she was in the wrong, Candice let her scold her without retorting.
The more she scolded, the more furious she became and decided to start getting physical. The family members on the first floor stood in the aisle to watch and the nurses on duty were all alarmed. Someone even informed Byron.
When he arrived at the scene, Patrickâs wife pushed two nurses who were trying to stop the fight and was about to pull Candiceâs hair.
Byron stopped her in mid-air and held her firmly in place.
Patrickâs wife glowered as the nurses said, âThis is Doctor Byron.â
âHow is this any
this any of your business?â
âYou are disturbing the rest of the patients and I, as a doctor, have the right to stop you.â
She was flaming with fury as she hollered, âMy husband has. a broken arm and Iâm going to settle the score with her!â
âThe police will intervene in the dispute, or you can leave the hospital to settle it. No fighting is allowed in the hospital.â Byron let go of her and continued, âBesides, she and your husband, are both victims.â
Patrickâs wife stomped her feet and said, âVictim? If she didnât seduce my husband, how could he have been attacked by her ex-husband?â
âI was once on the same flight as your husband for a business trip, and as far as I can tell, the party with the ill intentions, seemed to be Mr. Patrick.â

She twitched with anger and retorted, âDo you have proof?â
Byron dusted off the hem of his white coat and said, âDo you have proof that she seduced your husband?â
Patrickâs wife was instantly left speechless.
He inclined his head and instructed the nurse, âTake her to ward 8.â
âIâll file a complaint against you! Your last name is Wilson, huh?â she hollered.
He introduced himself with great composure, âByron Wilson from the male fertility and urology department.â
The moment he turned to leave, he glanced at Candice, who was hiding under the covers like a frightened moose.
Feeling a heartache, Byron walked over and said to her âItâs over now.â
She curled up and called out, âProfessor Wilson.â
Her aggrieved sobbing was filled with a tinge of sultriness.
That was what she was like when she cried.
Nouchers
It wasnât intentional but her voice was nasally and coquettish,
Vicky was more of a dominatrix.
Candice may sound pretentious at times.
In fact, she was very capable and could take hardship well. She also had great judgment and managed to support Rufus single-handedly in his job, helping him get promoted from project team leader into the companyâs vice president, tripling his annual salary.
Because of her innate characteristics, her colleagues disliked. her when she first joined the company, including Monica, who took the lead in alienating her and calling her an unreliable, innocent-looking, but bit chy and pretentious vixen.
Later, when she learned that she was devoted to Rufus and ignored all male colleagues, Monica gradually changed her mind.
âIâm scared.â
Byron looked down at her from above, âWhat are you afraid of?â
Chapter 29 Cajole
She kicked back the covers and asked, âAm I disfigured?â
He reached out and covered the sheets over her again.
âNo,â he answered.
âWill it leave a scar?â
âYes.â
With one word from Byron, Candice stopped talking and buried herself in her pillow as she started sobbing incessantly.
He pulled out the pillow, revealing her pale face.
âI wasnât pretty to begin with and with the scar, Iâll be even uglier.â
Byron frowned, pressing the back of his hand against her cold and smooth cheek.
âYouâre not that ugly.â
She knew how to flirt and win the hearts of men. However, she was meek, gentle, innocent, and soft.
Chapter 29 Cajole
Those were her strengths.
There were lots of pretty women but very few had her characteristics.

Byron was pondering about something when he drifted off slightly and his gaze fell on her scar.
âYouâre not allowed to look. Iâm disfigured now,â Candice said while covering her face.
He was losing his patience and he snapped, âEven if your donât have that scare, those who donât like you wonât like you all the same.â
For example, Rufus. However, he wasnât too blunt about it, lest he agitated her.
Candice turned her head and moved too much, causing her sternum to be stretched, leaving her in severe pain.
âWhat if Iâm disfigured then?â she asked in a trembling voice.
âYouâre not,â he said after a moment of silence.
She thought Byron would tease her and say, âTheyâll like you even less.â
Chapter 29 Cajole
Byron lacked humor and was nothing but cold and aloof.
He would occasionally be a little warm and friendly.
âDonât let your imagination run wild.â
Byron walked out of the ward and went to the top floor for a smoke break.
Before long, Harry pushed open the rooftop door and said, âCandiceâs famous again.â
He didnât turn around and instead, leaned against the railing.
âIt has nothing to do with her.â
âNothing to do with what?â
âIâm the one who did her.â
Harry bit down on a cigarette and borrowed Byronâs lighter.
âYouâre a handsome guy whoâs quite the gentleman. Can you not sound so blunt? Canât you say that you courted her?â
Chapter 29 Cale
Byron threw out the lighter and said, âIâm not really courting her. Weâre just trying to work things out.
âSheâs famous this time, not because of a scandal. Rather, itâs because she said that she has a medical insurance,â Harry said, leaning against the wall after lighting his cigarette.
âQuite a few single and divorced doctors in the emergency. department want her number.â
âBy the way, Doctor Ralph, the ophthalmologist who has been widowed for eighteen years, also intends to contact her.â
Annoyed to hear that, Byron turned away.
Harry flicked his cigarette ash and said, âPretty women who know how to live life are rare these days.â
Candice was indeed quite eye-catching. She just lacked confidence after being played and emotionally abused by Rufus for a long time.
If she was not attractive, he wouldnât have slept with her that night.
Even Percy, the otherworldly man only wanted fame and fortune, couldnât help but intervene in her affairs and take

pity on her.

She was better behaved than Vicky but she was just as popular with men as Vicky was.
While he was thinking about Percy, that man had already sat down on the couch and was taking off his suit.
âIs it serious?â
âMr. Percy,â Candice called while lying down.
âCall me Percy.â
He was always adamant about what Candice called him.
She took a deep breath and winced in pain before answering, âItâs not serious.â
âNot serious?â
She had already turned pale.
However, Percy knew that her skin was fair and thin so she would mark easily.
He bumped into her in this hospital that time, too, and the

blood on her forehead was brighter than vermillion at that time.
Percy was a man after all and he secretly imagined the seductive way her blood looked on her flawless skin.
The nurse entered the ward at that moment, and upon seeing that it was a stranger, she asked, âAre you her family?â
âNoâ¦â
âIs there an issue?â Percy beat her to it.
âPlease sign here.â
He took the document, which was a set of instructions for post-op notices.
Percy signed it and handed it back. âPlease.â
He was polite, courteous, and very gentlemanly.
No woman wouldnât adore a mature man with a powerful aura. The nurse blushed and smiled.
After the door was closed, Candice asked, âWhy did you sign it?â
Chapter 29: Cale
âMrs. Scott should not be aware of your injury yet. Since Iâm feigning as your family member, Iâll just sign it.â
Candice was stunned, not expecting Percy to know her so well.
She was wearing a loose hospital gown, and the buttons were not tied properly since it was warm. The fabric at her chest was loose and Candice struggled to sit up while her skin was exposed between the gaps of the buttons.
Percy hung the suit on the backrest and went over to help her. âAre you feeling uncomfortable?â
She clutched her lapel to cover her flesh. âNo.â
He got the message and casually looked away. âDo you want an apple?â
He bought a bouquet of flowers, a basket of fruit, and some health supplements.
Percy walked further away with his back facing her while she took the opportunity to fix her clothes.
âWho told you about my hospitalization?â
âI went to your office in the morning, and your colleague
Chapter 20 Cale
Monica said that you and the male boss sacrificed for love.â
âWhat?â Candice asked with a frown.
âIs that true?â Percy asked with a chuckle.
âNot true.â
Monica had good intentions to egg Percy on by creating a false sense of crisis.
However, she misjudged the situation.
Candice didnât like Percy at all.
However, the friendship between a man and a woman can easily become ambiguous.
Holding the fruit knife, Percy peeled an apple for her and said, âI didnât take it seriously.â
Candice inadvertently glanced at those hands of Percyâs and thought that they were beautiful.
His strong and taut veins were also clearly defined. Him. holding a silver knife was simply a visual pleasure.
Chapter 29: Cajole
Byronâs hands were calloused while Percyâs were not. They were smooth and clean.
âMonica wants me to find a good man and sometimes runs her mouth without thinking. Donât take it to heart.â
âHow about yourself then?â
âIâm not eager.â
Percy assented indifferently.
A moment later, he asked casually, âIs there a man that you like?â
After a moment of hesitation, Candice said, âNo.â
Byron wasnât considered a lover.
Even though he and Vicky were done, she still didnât feel secure about it because of their messy ties.
Candice can accept that a man has an ex, but she couldnât accept it if his feelings for her were too strong.
It was too lethal and Vicky had too much of an impact on Byron.
Chapter 29: Cajole
âIs it him?â
Wouther
She didnât dare to mention it voluntarily, but Percy did ask.
âDoctor Byron is yourâ¦â
âMy half-brother.â
Candice was expecting it, but still no less shocked.
âYou two donât get along well?â
âThereâs a feud between us and he hates me,â Percy said frankly.
She was a bit at a loss and didnât know to reply.
âDid he mention any of that to you?â
Candice shook her head and said, âThings between him and me is not what you think.â
She couldnât go on.
Percy laughed and asked, âStill havenât said yes to him?â
After a second of silence, he said, âHis feelings havenât
reached such an extent yet.â
For now, Byron was adopting the usual rebound tactic of many men to get over a love affair by diverting his passion. for Vicky to another woman.
âHeâs not the one for you.â
Candice remained silent.
âIâm sorry,â Percy said while staring at her.
âI understand,â she said with a smile.
He cut a small piece of apple and fed it to Candice.
Uncomfortable, she said, âIâll do it myself.â
âBe careful of your wounds.â
Just as Candice raised her hand, her ribs nearly cracked and she had to put it down. With the apple in her mouth, her ears started burning.
Percy stared at her and said, âYou get shy easily.â
âIâm not used to it.â
Chapter 29. Cajole
He patiently wiped the juice from the corner of Candiceâs lips.
âArenât women meant to be spoiled?â
Logically speaking, she was not as familiar with Percy as she was with Byron, and their relationship was far more distant.
However, Candice felt that their relationship was moving more uncontrollably towards a peculiar situation.
In contrast to Byron who openly flirted, Percy was doing it subtly.
It was hidden, deep, stable, and under his control.
Candice was desperately trying to pull back while Percy pushed forward constantly.
Although she had not experienced many men, she could judge them pretty well.
Rufus was her only failed attempt.
Moreover, this man, too, must have been conditioned.
He was domineering at work, resolute with his means, and gentle in front of women with strong devotion.
Chapter 29 Cale
At first she thought that it was his own upbringing, but it was obvious that Percy was not a ladiesâ man who just goes around charming everyone.
âArenât you going back to the office?â
He glanced at his watch and said, âYeah, Iâm leaving now. Iâll see you again sometime.â
Then, he stood up.
âYou donât have to come if youâre busy.â
Percy slung his blazer on inside the crook of his arm and said, âCandice, why wonât you accept the necklace?â
She pursed her lips and said, âA man giving a woman a necklaceâ¦â
âOf course I understand the significance,â he interjected.
Candice looked up to make eye contact with him.
Percy grinned and said solemnly, âWas it too sudden?â
