Chapter 9: Writing Snippet: Requiem for a House

Once Upon a Time: True Stories of an Aspiring WriterWords: 944

These poems weren't written about the Peppercorn Bend house, but about the one they moved into and capture the same spirit. A year ago, they moved into another space. But the memories are still there! This is one poem of three; the others can be found at musingsofmorganm.wordpress.com.

Write down everything.

Write down what you did

when you visited that day;

the game of Scrabble you won

and "zephyr"—the winning word.

Breathe in the fresh air

when you sit on the porch

Your open porch

with the mosquitoes flying in

isn't nearly as peaceful.

Belly laugh when someone

cracks a joke

even if it's 8:00 PM

and you're tired,

the leftover cake still sitting out on plates.

Give a large, big, group hug,

Try not to flinch

when it gets too crowded, too tight.

Most importantly,

never take the day for granted.

Because someday

this space will belong to strangers

and you

will be long gone,

just memories lingering in the walls

that others can't see.
