Four days later in the office. The afternoon was calm and peaceful.
âAh! Thereâs a document here that says they discovered a dragon lair!â
It was just after lunch and everyone was trying to relax. The administrative officers that had sat sprawling on their chairs jumped when they heard Nadia speak, as if there was a spring beneath them.
âDra, dragon lair!?â
âMy days, is that real?â
The faces of everyone in the office, including Glenn, turned pale. It was never good news to hear that a dragon lair had been found in oneâs territory. This was because dragons were extremely difficult monsters to communicate with, all brawn but no brain, and endlessly greedy. Simply put, it was a time bomb ready to explode at any moment.
Glenn took in a short breath before speaking.
âI had wondered why everything was going so smoothlyâ¦â¦ However, we still cannot abandon this region because of a dragon. We have to find a solution someâ¦â¦â
âI donât think we will have to worry about that. It seems the owner of the lair has been dead for a long time.â
âWhat?!â
This time, everyoneâs eyes were round for a different reason.
Dragons were monsters of greed. All types of gems, minerals, medicinal herbs, it didnât matter what it was: as long as it was rare and precious, they would gather all of them and keep them in their lairs. That was a reason why adventurers would risk danger and go to dragon lairs. If they managed to succeed, they would have struck gold.
But this was a dragon lair without a dragon?
That was no different from a warehouse having no gatekeeper. And this was a warehouse that was worthy of being called a gold mine.
âA dragon lair without its owner? As in, the dragon is gone?â
âYes, from this, it seems the dragon has been dead for a long time now.â
âSo that means it is ours now?â
âOf course. Count Altair had given the ownership of this area to us.â
âHuhâ¦â¦â
This was such a great boon they should have been jumping for joy, but weirdly, the news did not feel real.
Glenn stared vacantly as he muttered.
âWhy is itâ¦â¦ that good things keep occurring? How could thisâ¦â¦ there is no way such good fortune would come to meâ¦â¦â
Ever since he inherited the title, he had always faced some hardship or the other. He would solve one problem, and a second would pop up right after. And then a third, a fourth, a fifth problemâ¦. But at some point, things became so easy to deal with.
First, Winterfell controlled the treatment for the Black Death and was able to resolve all their financial difficulties. Then they occupied Vallon castle that had been the source of many a headache to them. And now, they had even discovered a dragon lair without its dragonâ¦â¦
Nadia looked at the puzzled Glenn and thought to herself.
âYes, that was all thanks to me.â
âI have laid out a feast for you all to gorge yourselves on. I can only hope you will realize it and take it into consideration when we get divorced.â
Glenn had almost wrapped his head around the happenings, and now asked.
âBut where did you find that document?â
âI found it sandwiched between these shelves. I was rummaging through to see if there are any important documents we might need and saw it.â
âWhat?â
In other words, the document had only been found four days after they occupied the castle. Glenn looked back at the administrators and scolded them.
âWhy were you unable to find this all that time! Something that was just lying there in this very office!â
âThat, thatâ¦â¦ we really didnât see this when we were organizingâ¦â¦â
âWe are telling the truth! In the past three days, we examined all the documents but none of them said anything about a dragon lair!â
âSo you mean you canât see what is right before your eyesâ¦â¦ hmm?â
Glennâs words came to a stop suddenly, right when the document Nadia handed him caught his eyes.
âWhatâs wrong?â
ââ¦â¦..â
He remained silent for a long time while looking over the document. Then he raised his head to look at Nadia. He looked at her with an odd expression.
âThisâ¦â¦ how did you read this?â
âPardon?â
Nadia was just as puzzled as he was. How did she read it? She just did. Surely, the entire group wasnât illiterate now, were they? Nadia tilted her head to the side, and took the document back from Glenn, as the administrator who felt he was the most unfairly treated person in the world spoke.
âYes, we were just like the Marquis! We did see that report, but we could not read it at allâ¦â¦!â
âWe just thought it was scribbles.â
âYes, exactly! We thought someone got bored while working and made some doodles, and then put it on the bookshelves by mistake.â
ââ¦â¦â¦â
âWas it that bad?â Nadia took another look at what she had written.
It was true that the document was so untidy, since she had written it with her left hand. But there was nothing else she could have done. If she had written with her right hand, wouldnât they have immediately found out that it was her handwriting?
âScribbles⦠I donât think it is so bad that one would mistake it for scribbling.â

Unfortunately, that was an opinion that only Nadia held. Glenn asked her in a tone that said he could not believe it.
âCan you really interpret this?â
ââ¦â¦â¦â
