Pulchritudinous (noun): physically beautiful.
I carried my sleeping Revered against my chest. Her curls were disheveled, pink lips pursed, and brow furrowed like she was thinking hard.
We shouldnât have brought her to the woods so soon after the war.
We should have given her more time to recover.
It had been stupid, but weâd been eager to show off. Even Sadie had thought it was a good idea. Weâd been stupid.
Arabella was powerful, but not innately vicious.
I stroked my thumb gently over the purple bruises smudged beneath her eyes. She said she would have hunted the fae down herself, but Iâd come to know her over the last few months.
She wouldnât have killed them.
That was why weâd done itâso she wouldnât have to. It was time for us to take care of her. Really pamper her.
I thought about the second promise Iâd made to her back at Elite Academy. Iâd whispered to her, âIâm the Ignis of the illustrious House of Malum. Iâm the twenty-seventh immortal king to serve the sun god since the dawn of time. I donât deal in shades of gray. I hurt those who hurt whatâs mine.â
I squeezed her tighter against my chest and bent my head toward her, inhaling her intoxicating scentâdanger and frost.
It mimicked the duality of her personality.
The woman in my arms was both fierce and mellow.
She was a survivor.
In her sleep, she nuzzled her face against my chest, and I swallowed a groan at the feeling of her rubbing against me.
It was divine torture to hold her, the woman of my every fantasy.
She shifted again, and I frowned at how easy it was to readjust her in my arms. Sheâd lost weight and was too light.
The war had taken its toll.
I mentally made a note to feed her rich cheeses and fruits as much as possible.
My mate would never be malnourished another day in her life. Iâd spend my immortal days making sure of it.
She shivered as I continued to climb the many stairs that led to the top of the house. Ice coated her hands like gloves, and flurries of snow drifted inside the warm house.
I hovered a scarlet ball of fire atop her chest, and she reached toward the warmth, even though she was unconscious.
That was another thing Iâd make sure of.
My ice queen would never suffer from the cold again.
If I had to stalk her with scarlet balls of fire everywhere she went, then that was what I would do.
After I climbed the last set of winding stairs, I arrived at our A-frame loft bedroom.
Nowhere else was good enough for my Revered to sleep in.
It was the safest space, nestled underneath the v of the roof and farthest from the door in case intruders entered.
I laid her down gently on our custom bed that spanned the entire width of the room.
The feral part of my devil nature loathed putting her down, even for a few seconds. I wanted to hold her and growl at everyone who entered her vicinity, so they knew she belonged to me.
I stood over my Revered.
My soul.
Mine.
There was a reason the Ignises from the House of Malum were renowned for our possessiveness. It ran hot in our blood. We hoarded our mates like a dragon with a priceless treasure because that was exactly what they were to us.
One did not simply neglect oneâs soul.
You protected it.
With every fucking breath you took.
It was well known through our society that Ignises from our House would go to extreme measuresâlike locking their Revereds away and never letting other men so much as look at them. One of my ancestors had cut the tongue out of every personâman or womanâwhoâd dared to talk to his Revered.
Flames multiplied across my arms as I thought of all the ways I would hurt people who challenged her. No way would she be fighting anyone in the fae realm; Iâd kill them all first. Iâd tear them to pieces andâ
Scorpius dug his nails into the back of my neck and yanked me back harshly. âCalm the fuck down,â he snarled into my ear. âYou will not ruin this for us with your possessiveness.â
He shook me back and forth.
Flames came out of my mouth as I breathed heavily.
âCalm. Down. Right. Now.â His voice was sharp as glass, and his nails dug deep, drawing blood.
I concentrated on the pain, and it slowly brought me back to reality. The haze of anger lifted from my vision.
âDonât forget who she is,â Scorpius warned, awe in his voice. âSheâs more powerful than all of usâdonât be an idiot.â
Orion patted my arm. âHeâs right,â he whispered as he stood on the bed and opened the skylight windows.
A warm breeze filtered in.
Cricket chirps and frog noises filled the space.
Millions of stars glittered above.
âBreathe in,â Scorpius ordered, and I obeyed. I exhaled my Ignis aggression.
I inhaled calm.
Strangers who didnât know me thought I was unfeeling. I had the opposite problem.
My feelings were too much.
Theyâd always plagued me.
Scorpius and Orion were the two people whoâd always understood that about me. They related.
My world was shades of scarlet; I burned with obsession and rage. Scorpiusâs world was shades of black; he yearned for pain. Orionâs world was shades of gold; people were shiny toys for him to play with.
For the longest time, it had only been the three of us.
Now Aran joined us.
In her memories, Iâd felt what she felt. Iâd seen through her eyes.
Aranâs world was shades of gray; she was numb, unable to process the terrifying capacity for violence that lived within her.
She deserved so much more than gray.
I pulled away from Scorpius and walked over to the bed so I could play with my Reveredâs blue curls.
Iâd channel my obsessive nature to not only protect her but to help her heal. To help all of us heal.
So help me sun god, her world would be shades of vibrant colors.
I refused to accept anything less for her.
As I twined the silky lock around my finger and made silent promises to my sleeping mate, Scorpius gathered our softest throw blankets and tucked them around her.
My ball of fire hovered toward the stone hearth in the roomâs corner, then it whooshed to life.
When I was fully satisfied that my Revered was comfortable and warm, I pulled off all my clothes.
John made a choking noise.
Turning, I realized Luka and John were standing awkwardly in the doorway.
I rubbed the back of my neckâIâd never expected them to be my mates. It was unheard of for a devil to have five mates.
But here we stood.
Warmth expanded in my chest as I looked down at Aran. She was the reason that all of us were connected. Iâd gone from suffering because I was missing my mate to having more mates than I knew what to do with.
It was insane.
Life felt like a dream.
Pressure built behind my eyes, and I wiped it away discreetly with the back of my hand as I gestured at the twins. âYou can come in.â
John glanced at Scorpius, then our Revered. âI donât want to intrude,â he said slowly.
âGet in here. Youâre our mates,â Scorpius snapped.
All of us were haggard.
Worn down from the war.
âOkay, then,â Johnâs eyes widened as he and Luka stepped inside the cozy space. They stared at the giant dragon that was carved across the walls.
âIt symbolizes the power of the House of Malum,â I explained. âAll our powerâher power.â
âSheâs amazing,â Scorpius grinned viciously. âSheâs terrifying.â He gnashed his teeth. âSheâs perfect.â
I rolled my eyes at my sadistic mate.
âDonât be shy, John,â Scorpius sneered wickedly as he climbed into bed and patted the space beside him. âI wonât biteâmuch.â
Luka and Orion shared a glance as they shook their heads.
I ignored everyone and climbed in so I could hold my Revered in her sleep. No one complained, because they knew I was fire, and she was ice.
She needed me to warm her.
It was my lifeâs purpose.
When all six of us were tucked under the covers, lying beside one another, we stared in silence at the glittering sky.
Our Revered was the only one who slept.
The rest of us were painfully awake, echoes of the war were tangible around us. Adrenaline still strummed among us.
I stared down at Aranâs furrowed brow. My raspy voice was loud in the silence. âWe need to let her heal.â
There was a beat, then John responded, âObviously. Sheâs been through hell.â
Scorpius frowned.
Orion sat up against the headboard and stared down at her, Luka scrubbed at his face, and I twisted more of her silky curls around my hand.
I already knew that letting her go in the morning was going to pose a problem.
âSo what exactly does letting her heal mean?â Luka asked. âJust so weâre all on the same page.â
I was so startled that the quiet twin was conversing with us that it took me a moment to process what he was asking.
Scorpius answered for me, âIt means we donât touch her. Not until sheâs 100 percent ready.â
The five of us looked at one another with grave expressions.
âWe have all of immortality,â John agreed. âWe need to make sure sheâs well. Thatâs the priority.â
I nodded as I tucked myself tighter around her protectively. Mine. Mine. Mine. Mine. Mine. A possessive voice repeated in my head.
My fire wanted her.
I wanted her.
âWe all need to heal,â Orion whispered, as he grabbed Lukaâs hand.
Scorpius sighed. âOne day at a time, thatâs all we can do.â
âFor her,â I whispered, and the men chorused back, âFor her.â
She was our soul.
Our hearts.
Our Revered.
Our treasure.
