Chapter 31 â I Like You
There was an unspoken pressure telling them to stop fighting in front of me. They seemed to get the message, and Claude and Xavier clamped their mouths shut. Only then did I smile.
Ah, that was better now.
âItâs not that bad between us. As you know, weâre from the same class,â Claude said.
ââ¦â
Xavier looked puzzled when he heard that, but Claude continued on casually. âBut the Crown Prince has a rather heartless side⦠So sometimes weâre at odds.â
ââ¦Me?â Xavier sputtered.
âMaybe you donât realize it, but in fact, youâre very heartless and cold. So I understand to some extent why you havenât been married yet. I believe the ladies nowadays prefer friendly and funny guys.â
I tilted my head in confusion at Xavier. âWellâ¦I donât think youâre heartless.â
The Crown Princeâs face suddenly brightened, but Claude smirked from the other side.
âYou were completely fooled. You donât know how heartless he isââ
âI think thatâs enough, Duke. Youâre about to cross the line,â Xavier in a warning tone, and Claude gave him an odd look. There seemed to be something else in their relationship, but as a third party, I had no idea. Instead I smiled awkwardly and did my best to close this topic.
âBoth of you are good people.â
Thankfully, Xavier steered the discussion to something else. âMore importantly, Lady Maristella, does Duke Escliffe come here every day?â
âYes, Your Highness,â I said, nodding without thinking, and a crease furrowed Xavierâs brow when he heard my answer. I looked at him questioningly. âIs there a problem?â
âNo, nothing.â Xavier smiled faintly and nodded, then spoke again a moment later. âBut thereâs one thing Iâm a little worried about.â
âWorried?â
âYou should check with your maid to see if thereâs anything missing.â
âPardon?â I didnât understand what he was going on about, and Xavier continued to speak with a serious expression.
âActually, Duke Escliffe has a habit of stealing. Heâs famous for that since he was young.â
Soâ¦he meant that Claude might be stealing my jewelry?
âBut His Grace is wealthier than me. Besides, thereâs nothing particularly valuable in my roomâ¦â I said disbelievingly.
Then, Claude interjected in a flustered tone. âLady Maristella, donât believe him.â The look in his eyes was of someone who was wronged. âThatâs when I was very young. I was at an age that didnât know what morality and ethics are. Thereâs no way I would do that now. This is a slander.â
âOld habits die hard,â Xavier said.
âYour Highness,â Claude growled. âIâm really curious to know why youâre defaming my reputation by talking about my immature childhood.â
Xavier scoffed. âI just want her to be careful. Donât be so sensitive. And itâs not like I was lying.â
ââ¦â
Claude didnât say anything in return, as if Xavierâs words were true. But arenât quite a few kids like that when they are young?
Orâ¦not?
Anyway, I knew I had to change the subject again quickly, because dragging this conversation down this path might end in a fight. Before I could do so, however, Xavier spoke first.
âOh, Lady Maristella. Come to think of it, there was something I forgot to give you.â
âSomething you forgot to give me?â
âHereâ¦â Xavier took something out and held it out to me.
It was a small, flat box. I accepted it and opened it with a curious look, and inside I saw a white handkerchief. In one corner were Maristellaâs initials and an embroidered red rose. The fabric the handkerchief was made of was of luxurious quality.
A smile bloomed on my face at the unexpected gift.
âThis isâ¦â
Xavier smiled softly at me. âI wanted to give you earlier⦠But you were in an accident, so I didnât have a chance to.â
The smile widened on my face. âThank you, Your Highness. I didnât expect you to remember.â
âOne should keep oneâs promise. I donât know if itâs to your liking.â
âOf course. Itâs really pretty.â
Xavier hesitated for a moment. âA-andâ¦â he stammered.
âYes?â I prompted.
âI embroidered it myself.â
ââ¦Pardon?â I blinked in surprise. Xavier embroidered this complicated pattern himself? âReally?â
âThe handiwork may look a bit poor⦠If you donât like it, I will replace it with a handkerchief embroidered by an expert.â
I shook my head quickly. âAh, no, Your Highness. This is pretty enough.â I closed the lid on the handkerchief box. âI will keep your sincere gift. Although Iâm not sure if I can accept something this preciousâ¦â
âI donât know how someone so busy supposedly had time to do embroidery,â Claude snorted in disapproval, but Xavier ignored him and continued to speak.
âI learned it here and there. Iâm embarrassed because this is my first time.â
âThis is your first time?â My surprise couldnât help but grow. To anyoneâs eyes, these werenât the skills of someone who embroidered for the first time. âYouâre this good even though itâs your first time⦠You have a talent, Your Highness,â I murmured in a trembling voice.
Xavier blushed slightly. âMy skill is not good enough to be praised.â The pink on his cheeks caused my heart to flutter at the sight.
Ah, wait a second. A blushing face wasnât supposed to be this good-looking.
Claude insisting on interrupting again. âMore importantly, Your Highness, I know youâre busy. I donât know if you can keep on staying here.â
Come to think of it, due to Claudeâs unexpected visit, Xavierâs own time here had dragged on. I, too, became worried that I was taking up Xavierâs time.
âIâm afraid you should go now, Your Highness.â
âIâm fiââ
Claude jumped in. âI know you have many books to read by tomorrow. But you seem to be too slacking, Your Highness. If the Emperor knows, Iâm sure heâll be concerned.â
ââ¦â
Xavier fixed Claude a silent stare, then gave a small sigh as if in defeat. Then he turned to me.
âI think Iâm going to have to go, Lady Maristella,â he said.
âYes, Your Highness. Iâm sorry that I took up too much of your time.â
Xavier rose from his seat with a graceful smile on his face plastered onto his face. But then, he let out a low groan.
âUrghâ¦â
âYour Highness?â I said worryingly, but he didnât answer me and just stared at Claude with a fierce look.
âYour Highness, whatâs wrong?â I called again.
âAh⦠Nothing, Lady Maristella. My foot just suddenly hurtâ¦â
âIs it the foot I stepped on back then?â
âNo, Lady Maristella. This was already from a long time ago,â Xavier said with a smile and a shake of his head. He then said that he really did have to leave, then left the room. Finally, only Claude was left. I drank the rest of my tea before turning to him.
âArenât you going, Your Grace?â
âI just arrived, Lady Maristella.â
âSo youâre going to stay longer?â I asked.
He looked at me. âUnlike His Highness, I didnât have time to talk to you alone.â
âDo you have to talk to me alone?â
âYes.â
âWhy?â
âItâs for your mental treatment.â
ââ¦â
No, my mental condition was fine now, thanks.
I shook my head. âYouâre welcome to go. Iâve had enough treatment today.â
ââ¦â
When he heard that, Claude suddenly looked like a puppy in the rain. The sight of it surprised me, but I then asked him the question that I wanted to ask him before.
âBut how long are you going to keep coming here? Iâm all better nowâmentally and physically.â
ââ¦â
Claude put on a serious look again at my remark. âDo you not want to see me every day even after your recovery?â
âAfter?â
âIâm asking if youâd like to keep seeing me every day.â
âWhy should Iâ?â
I asked him purely out of curiosity, but the hurt look on his face made me stop. I wondered for a moment if I did something wrong.
No, I just asked him out of curiosity. Was that such a deadly question?
âThatâs becauseâ¦â he began.
âBecauseâ¦?â I prodded.
âI like you.â
