Chapter 32 â Friend Request
ââ¦â
It took awhile for my brain to process his words, and it was about three seconds before I reacted.
âWhat?â I blurted out.
âAh, of course, Iâm saying that I like you as a friend,â Claude said.
âFriend?â I repeated stupidly.
âI think youâre a good person. Would you like to be my friend?â
âH-hold your horses. This is too suddenâ¦â
Today was a day of confusionâI had a three-party encounter with Xavier and Claude, and suddenly Claude wanted to keep meeting me because he liked me as a friend.
I couldnât hide the bewilderment on my face as I tried to clarify his words. âIf by friendâ¦you mean friends who eat, talk and shop together?â
âYes. You donât have to think too hard,â Claude said with a smile. âI hear youâre friends with Lady Odeletta. Itâs not that difficult if you think of a relationship like thatâfriendship.â
âOhâ¦â
Butâ¦was being friends possible between man and woman? I never had a male friend before, and I couldnât help but be hesitant.
âDo you need some time to think?â Claude offered.
ââ¦â
Itâs not like he was asking me outâhe just wanted to be my friend. I couldnât keep him waiting. In the end, I gave an approving nod, and a wide smile split Claudeâs face at my answer. He was so dazzling that I squinted one eye without realizing it.
âThank you, Lady Maristella. Itâs an honor,â he said solemnly.
âNo, you neednât⦠Itâs embarrassing to hear that,â I replied, flustered.
âI thought you would refuse. So I was a bit worried.â
âMe?â
Did I look like someone that played hard to get? Claudeâs words put me into an unexpected agony. I thought I was a fairly open person, but did I not seem that way to other people?
âSometimes you draw lines,â Claude explained. âThatâs why I thought that way. Iâm glad you agreed readily.â
âYes, wellâ¦â Somehow I felt embarrassed and I smiled awkwardly.
Claude shot me a strange look, then stood up.
I looked curiously at him. âAre you going now?â
âJust earlier you asked me to go. Now that Iâm really going, do you feel sad?â
âItâs not like that⦠But stay safe.â
âYes, Lady Maristella. I will come again in two days,â he told me.
In two days? Not tomorrow?
âIs there anything happening tomorrow?â I asked.
âAre you sad that Iâm not visiting you?â
âJustâ¦â Some vague unpleasant feeling settled in my stomach, like something was out of place. No other emotion. I spoke honestly. âItâs just that someone who comes every day suddenly told me he wonât be coming tomorrow. So I was just wondering,â I explained.
âI have an important deal,â he said.
âImportant deal?â
âYes,â Claude confirmed with a smile. âI have to solve something with the Cornohen family.â
ââ¦â
My breath hitched at the familiar name.
Cornohen familyâthat was Dorotheaâs family.
Claudeâs brow creased when he saw the sudden stoniness of my face. âAre you alright, Lady Maristella? Your complexion suddenlyâ¦â
âItâs nothing, Your Grace,â I said with a dismissive shake of my head. âI just recalled a bad memory for a second.â
âI see.â Claude nodded his head. âCount Cornohen and his wife are greedy merchants. I donât know the detailsâ¦but I hear that Count Bellafleur and his wife have a close relationship with the Cornohen family.â
ââ¦â
Even Claude knew about that. I suppose that our families really were close. But was it true that we had fallen out because of me?
I must have had an uncomfortable expression on my face because Claude then said to me, âPlease let me know if they bother you.â
âPardon?â I blinked confusedly at the unexpected remark. âBut whyââ
âBecause weâre now friends.â
ââ¦â
My tongue felt numb at the mention of âfriendsâ, and Claude took my hand and gracefully kissed it. Before I could say anything, he spoke.
âFriends protect each other. Feel free to speak to me at any time.â
ââ¦â
I stared dazedly at Claude as he walked out of the room. When I was left alone, I grabbed the handkerchief that Xavier gave me. My brain was spinning; too many things had happened at once for me to process.
âMarie?â
There was a knock on the door, and Martina came in.
I turned to her with a blank look. âHi, Martina,â I mumbled weakly.
âWhatâs wrong with your expression? Is there something going on?â she asked.
âI feel like my energy is getting sucked out today,â I said in a monotone.
âReally?â she said, then her eyes fell to my hands. âOhâ¦Iâve never seen that handkerchief before.â
âAh.â An awkward smile strained my lips. âItâs the handkerchief that the Crown Prince had given to me⦠How is it? Isnât it pretty, Martina?â
âItâs simple, but elegant and beautiful. Thereâs embroidery too. Is that your initial?â Martina observed.
âYeah. His Highness embroidered it himself.â
âOh my. That was very thoughtful,â she said, and her eyebrows were slightly lifted in surprise. âI knew the Crown Prince was well versed in many fields, but I didnât know he was also good with embroidery. Heâs reallyâ¦perfect. Thereâs nothing he canât do.â
âI was also shocked. After listening to you, I thought he was very cold, but that was not the case.â I gave a light smile. âI think heâs someone good.â
He matched well with Odeletta.
When Odeletta came to mind, I suddenly missed her. It wasnât that I didnât expect her to come, but still, I was a little disappointed. Was she busy? I decided to ask Martina.
âMartina, do you know the news about Odeletta?â
âThe daughter of the Trakos family? Ah, right. Come to think of it, there was something I didnât tell you.â
âWhat?â
âKnowing that youâre not allowed to have visitors, she sent you a letter a while ago. She said she wanted to visit if it was alright with you.â
âReally?â I gushed, and I smiled brightly.
Martina seemed surprised by my reaction. âSince when did you get close to the daughter of the Trakos family? Then, I will tell her to come?â
âCan you tell Lady Odeletta to come tomorrow?â
It happened that Claude wasnât coming tomorrow.
Martina nodded at my words. âI will tell her that.â
Her voice sounded somewhat excited when she answered me, and I couldnât help but be curious.
âMore importantly, is there anything good happening, Martina?â I prodded. âYou look excited.â
âHmmâ¦actually, I am excited,â she replied.
âAbout what?â
âIt feels like you are finally friends with someone good. Actually, I donât know much about Odeletta, but at least sheâs better than Dorothea.â
âI wonât get involved with her anymore,â I asserted.
âOf course you shouldnât! Itâs a waste of time to hang out with that woman.â Martina gave a final shake of her head and then headed outside. After a while, I nodded my head in belated agreement.
That was what Dorothea thought about me anyway. The proof was thereâshe didnât visit me once when I was unwell, and didnât send me a single letter or flower.
âNow I only need to arrange the relationship between Odeletta and Xavierâ¦â
I leaned my back onto my bed and let my eyelids drift downwards.
Once I got them together, everything would come back to normal.
I couldnât suppress the satisfied smile on my lips.
