Chapter 69 â Please Stay Away From Lady Maristella
âReally?â
âWho?â
Dorothea felt an inexplicable pleasure surge at the sudden focus of attention. âDidnât you all see his dance partner today?â she asked the group.
âWasnât it Lady Maristella?â
âYes! Didnât you notice anything strange?â Dorothea prompted.
âWell, I donât know,â one lady said hesitantly.
âI heard that Lady Maristellaâs carriage accident was the Dukeâs faultâ¦â another lady replied.
Everyone knew that, but Dorothea spoke in a hushed voice as if there were more to it.
âIsnât that just how they got acquainted?â
âJust like Lady Cornohen said, Lady Maristella is the Dukeâs dance partner, but itâs no surprise.â
Dorothea shook her head. âHis Grace is nice to all the ladies on the outside, but you can sense the walls around him, right? He doesnât seem to hang around anyone unless heâs really close with someone.â
âI think so, too. His Grace doesnât easily let other people be with him.â
âWow, I envy Lady Maristella. Do you think thereâs a subtle atmosphere between the two that we donât know?â
âBut thatâs not what matters.â Dorothea changed the direction of the conversation in a rather serious voice. â Donât you all see anything strange?â
âWhat is it?â
âLady Maristella.â Dorotheaâs voice had a tremor of displeasure and anger when she spoke her friendâs name. Some of the ladies who noticed it thought it strange, but did not comment on it for fear of worsening the mood.
âLast time she was involved with the Crown Prince, and this time sheâs with the Duke. Isnât that fishy?â she said conspiratorially.
âWhat do you mean?â
âSheâs two-timing them,â Dorothea said.
There was a moment of silence, then stunned exclamations poured in from all sides.
âWhat?â
âOh my word.â
âReally?â
Dorothea pushed on without regard. âFrom what I know, she often goes back and forth to Thurman Palace. Iâm sure of it. Lady Maristella is playing the two.â
âBut arenât the Crown Prince and the Duke Academy colleagues? I know theyâre close.â
âItâs common for friendship to be tossed aside for love. But theyâre high-ranking people, right?â
It was true that all sorts of rumors abounded in the Empireâs social circles, but Claude and Xavier were of very high status. Therefore, the young nobles were also cautious of making fun of such topics. Dorothea, however, did not seem to care, and whether it was out of courage or foolhardiness, she continued to run her mouth.
âIâve known Marie since we were kids, and sheâs like a foxââ she nattered, when a voice suddenly interrupted her.
âYou shouldnât speak of someone when theyâre not there.â
The voice clearly sounded displeased. The other nobles who recognized the newcomer panicked and shut their mouths.
âI knew that you had a rude character from the start, but I didnât realize it would be to this extent.â
It was Odeletta.
Dorothea fixed a stare at the other woman. âAm I?â she said haughtily.
âWho do you think you are? Arenât you a friend of Lady Maristellaâs? I donât understand how you can just talk behind someoneâs back,â Odeletta chastised.
Dorothea gave a scoff. âHa. When did I talk behind someoneâs back?â
âWhat you did just now is called talking behind someoneâs back. Gossiping in the absence of the other. Donât you feel ashamed?â
âI beg your pardon?â Dorothea fumed, her outrage building. The crowd around them held their breaths as they began to watch the two women fight.
âWhat did I do that was shameful? Iâm just saying whatâs true.â
âYou truly are shameless. I already knew that, but I didnât know it was this bad. If you have something to say, at least do it when the person youâre talking about is present. Didnât we all learn that was the proper behavior as a lady?â
âHa, donât pretend to be all noble,â Dorothea scoffed once more.
Odelettaâs lips turned downward in disapproval, but Dorothea pivoted the conversation once more.
âLook at Lady Odeletta, sheâs so great.â
ââ¦Are you talking about me?â
âYes. Youâre taking your friendâs side, even though sheâs in a relationship with someone you like.â
Odeletta was rendered speechless by Dorotheaâs words. Dorothea had struck her weak point. Her expression turned frigid when she realized the fact.
âWhat kind of ârelationshipâ do you mean?â Odeletta pressed.
âYouâve heard everything all this time and youâre still thinking of something different? Thatâs funny.â A smile widened on Dorotheaâs face. âLady Maristella is playing with both the Crown Prince and the Duke. I canât believe you defended your friend in this situation. Youâre not a noble.â
âYouâre insulting Lady Maristella and the Crown Prince and Duke with unconfirmed facts. Aside from Lady Maristella, you can be charged with insulting the Imperial Family. Do you want to go to Vale Tower?â Odeletta said.
Dorothea cocked an eyebrow. âAre you threatening me?â
âIâm not threatening you, Iâm just telling the truth,â Odeletta declared.
âThen Iâm going to tell you one truth, Lady Odeletta,â Dorothea said. âYou also love the Crown Prince, right? Iâm saying this to you because looking at you makes me sad. Stay away from Lady Maristella. If she really thinks of you as a friend, she shouldnât be close to His Highness.â
âThatâs a very old-fashioned idea. I donât have the right to restrict my friendâs relationships just because I like the Crown Prince. And my friend does not have impure intentions towards him. I know that better than anyone,â Odeletta said firmly.
That fact alone made Odeletta sadder. It would be easier for her to hate Maristella if the latter were a bad friend. Then Odeletta wouldnât feel any guilt about getting her into trouble.
To her great misfortune, however, her friend was a kind and sincere person.
âYouâre being fooled. You poor thing,â Dorothea sneered.
Is it true? Odeletta wondered wildly for a moment, but she soon shook the thought off. Dorothea was like Satan.
âAre you insulting me now?â Odeletta asked.
âBut itâs true. I do feel sorry for you. Youâre about to lose the person you like to your friend!â
ââ¦â
Dorotheaâs childish provocations made Odeletta feel like her body was turning to ice. Because Dorothea was not completely wrong. Xavier liked Maristella.
But even so, Odeletta didnât think the situation had fallen to the point where she would tolerate hearing such things from Dorothea. She steeled herself and began her own counterattack.
âBut isnât that also the situation youâre in?â Odeletta shot back.
Dorothea looked dumbfounded. âWhat are you talking about?â
âYou are also in danger of losing the person you like to a friend.â
Maristella was also Dorotheaâs friend, after all. At least, for now.
Odeletta smiled. âItâs true if I borrow your words. Even if your delusion is right, the fact that you crush is taken away by your friend⦠Isnât that too much? The Crown Prince never belonged to either of us in the first place, in any case. His Highness would be offended if he heard that.â
âAre you insulting me now?â Dorothea accused.
âHow is it an insult? Iâm only speaking facts,â Odeletta replied with a giggle. âYouâre very confused, but youâre in the same situation as I am, Lady Odeletta. We have Lady Maristella as a friend, and we both like the Crown Prince.â
ââ¦â
âPlease stay away from Lady Maristella, Lady Dorothea. You are delusional.â Finding herself on the other side of the situation, Odeletta smiled inwardly. Meanwhile, Dorothea found herself astonished. She bit her lips.
âWhat right do you have to tell me to stay away from Marieââ
âThen what right do you have to tell me to stay away from Marie?â Odeletta said, openly laughing at Dorothea. âArenât you being hypocritical?â
If I do it, itâs romance, and if others do it, itâs an affair.
