Chapter 74 â Why Donât You Confess?
Claude was the first one to break the silence. âYou endured this better than I expected.â His jaw stiffened. âYou donât hate me now?â
ââ¦â
Xavier remained mute. He glared at Claude with his mouth closed, and after a long moment, finally spoke.
âNo way. I still hate you,â Xavier scowled.
Claude squinted his eyes at the other young man. âArenât you acting too coldly towards me?â he asked.
ââ¦â
âWhat did I do wrong in this situation? Weâre both innocent. In fact, weâre the victims of our parentsâ generation.â
âVictim?â Xavier laughed mockingly. âYouâre very mistaken, and your family has never been a victim.â
ââ¦â
âThe victims were always us. No, technically itâs not âusâ either.â
Xavierâs father was exempt from any victimhood. Xavier couldnât bring himself to say that, but Claude seemed to have noticed the unspoken words.
Claude didnât say anything for a moment, and when he couldnât bear the silence any longer, he spoke again.
âSo itâs going to stay like this in the future?â
âDo you want the relationship to change?â
âI donât hate you,â Claude said, bluntly pointing out the truth. âYou donât hate me too. Am I wrong?â
ââ¦â
âIf you hated me, then there would be no reason for you to be so nice to me before. You just felt a sense of duty and guilt about the late Empressââ
âStop it,â Xavier said in a low voice, sharply cutting through Claudeâs words.
Claude hid his surprise, but did as Xavier wanted and didnât provoke him any further.
Xavier continued in a flat voice. âWhatever feelings I have towards you, we already crossed a bridge that cannot be crossed back. We can never go back to what it was like in the past.â
ââ¦â
âYou understand that, donât you?â
âThatâs all?â Claude said with a frown, and Xavierâs forehead crumpled equally.
âWhat do you mean?â Xavier asked.
âIs that problem really the only reason we canât go back to the way things were?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âAre you asking because you really donât know?â Claude stared intently at Xavier before giving him the answer. âLady Maristella.â
ââ¦â
âDo you like her?â Claude probed.
Regardless of any answer, Claude already had a relaxed smile, as if he already knew his response. Xavier didnât like the Dukeâs attitude, and he didnât want to give Claude the satisfaction of guessing right.
Xavier involuntarily clenched his left hand. âDonât involve her in our relationship.â
âWhoa, whoa. Calm down, Your Highness. You probably know this already, but I also care for her a lot.â
âThatâs why,â Xavier bit back, acidity tinging his words. âIsnât that strange?â
âWhat?â
âThat when I came to like her, you immediately liked her, too.â Xavierâs eyes were cold as ice. Instead of being intimidated, Claude gave a knowing smile. Xavierâs stare grew even harder.
âYou had ulterior motives in getting close to her,â Xavier accused.
ââ¦â
âIsnât that right?â
ââ¦Youâre painting me as the bad guy,â Claude said tiredly.
âJust tell me the truth. Am I right or not?â
Claude sighed and scratched the back of his head. Xavier made it impossible to slip out of a difficult situation; Claude both liked and disliked that about the Crown Prince. He paused for a moment before answering.
ââ¦Youâre right.â
Maristella wouldnât know this, but in truth, Claudeâs reason for getting closer to her wasnât so pure.
Xavier had made some smart guesses. He gave a click of his tongue and smiled bitterly. âHow could we drag someone else into our problems? Someone who doesnât even know anything?â
Claude was silent. He had nothing to say to that part. No matter what his feelings were now, his intentions from the start had been dishonest. He seemed momentarily embarrassed at being exposed, and after a while he spoke.
âThere is no excuse,â he said.
Xavier arched an eyebrow. âIs that it?â
âItâs not something I have to apologize to you anyway.â Claudeâs voice turned sharp. âEven if you ask for an apology, thatâs for Lady Maristella, not you. Am I wrong?â
ââ¦Youâre not wrong.â Claude spoke the truth, but Xavier still felt uneasy, and he furrowed his brow.
âDonât tell me the carriage accident was on purpose?â he asked.
âHey, Your Highness,â Claude snapped with a look that said he took total offense. âThat accident almost killed me, too. Whatever youâre thinking, Iâm not stupid enough to risk my life. You understand?â
ââ¦â
âShe just happened to be a victim,â Claude continued, âand I noticed you were interested in her shortly before the accident. And it was only after the accident that I thought would be a good opportunity to get close to her.â Claude recalled his memories of a few months ago as he spoke. âIt was just a coincidence. Even without the accident, I would have approached her somehow. There are an endless number of ways.â
ââ¦Yes, you would,â Xavier said, his face darkening as if he no longer wished to listen to Claudeâs excuses. âIf you know that your behavior is wrong now, you should just stop. Donât play with peopleâs minds.â
âI have never played with peopleâs minds.â
âIs that a joke? How could you say that?â Xavier exclaimed in a voice that was not yet a yell. He stared at Claude with an incredulous expression. âShould I tell her why you got close to her? That you only took interest in her because I liked her in the first place? That you wanted to screw me over? Because since I hated you, you naturally hated me. No, I donât know if that was the problem with our relationship. You always saw me as a rival.â
Xavierâs voice, which had maintained its polite tone for hours, was gradually rising in heat.
âYour words are too harsh,â Claude snapped back. âIf our relationship hadnât gotten this bad, then I wouldnât be coveting the woman my friend likes.â
âSo youâre admitting that what I said is true. Isnât that right?â
ââ¦â
Damn it.
âYouâre not wrong,â Claude admitted with a huff.
âStay away from her,â Xavier warned in a sharp voice. âIf you have a sliver of a conscience left, donât get close to her.â
âHey, Your Highness. Thatâs my choice,â Claude retorted. âWhen the time is right, I will give a sincere apology to Lady Maristella and continue our relationship honestly. Of course, you wonât accept my personal decision, but even so, thatâs just a problem between us. What the hell do you care?â
ââ¦â
âI donât know why youâre trying to interfere between me and her? Are you my father? Or my motherââ
Claude quickly snapped his mouth shut. Damn it, he went too far.
Xavier said nothing, and the silence between the two renewed itself.
Claude gave an awkward cough. âAnyway,â he said after a moment. âLetâs not concern ourselves with each other. Youâll do your thing, and Iâll do my thing.â
âYouâll keep deceiving her?â Xavier accused.
âDeceiving!â Claude shouted in affront. âAre you deaf? Iâve been saying this since a while ago. At some point, my feelings towards her became real!â
Xavier stared back doubtfully. âThatâs a contradiction. You werenât sincere from the start.â
âYeah, youâre brilliant,â Claude said sarcastically. Xavierâs habit of pointing out other peopleâs words remained the same. âYou talk like you never make a mistake, Your Royal Highness who is oh so great.â
ââ¦Itâs a mistake not to confess to her now.â
âWhy?â
âWell, look at you.â Xavier looked straight at Claude. âWhy donât you confess to her?â
âMaybe we both have the same reason,â Claude pointed out.
Xavier was confused. âWhat?â
âWe both clearly know our feelings, but we canât confess.â
Xavier fell silent, and Claude gave a grin.
âI think I know. Shall I guess?â Claude said.
The reason why they could not be honest with their feelings. Because of the common connection they both shared.
