"Hi lion." A husky voice breathed out making my ears tickles.
Animal names!? Come on!
Don't turn around Layla, don't speak to him. Nothing good comes out of it.
"Giving me the silence treatment huh."
The nerv of this guy. Can he just shut up?
"Abdullah you're in team white and Ismail, team red." The coach finally finished with the teams.
"Okay class. It will be white against red match. You all know the rules." The coach had a basketball in his hand.
"Let's start, Imma need a person from each team in the middle."
As if on cue Amir started walking towards where coach was. Always arrogant.
I looked around my team, waiting for a guy to fetch the ball for us because let me be honest I can't beat his height.
No one stepped up. I wasn't exaggerating when I said everyone is school feared him.
"I'm still waiting." The coach snapped at us.
Not wanting to make this long I made my way in front of the jerk with amused face.
Does everything amuse him? What's going on?!
"Okay.... START" THE coach threw the ball in the air.
Game on mister.
***************
I ended up losing.
I don't even know what happened.
The guy was really good at basketball. No wonder he's the captain of basketball team in our school. It's actually not fair, he trains to become a professional while I play as a hobby.
I on the other hand am on the track team in our school. We train twice a week together with the boys team. Amir's gang member Keith is on it and I have to say his ego is bigger than the sun.
And that's not the only reason I lost. My teammates didn't even budge!! I felt like I was the only one playing and trying to win. Every time Amir got his hands on the ball (which was all the time) they would stop playing.
Look I know he's strong and all but hey! Man up a little.
"Well done team red, good teamwork and that's how a team should work." He praised the other team before the coach turned to us.
"Team white however was the worst. All of you minus five except for Abdullah. You lost with 49/83 which was good despite the fact there was only ONE player playing." He shook his head at the others and smiled at me. "Good job."
Ugh I really really wanted to win.
"You're not gonna stay here all day are you?" I suddenly found Amir's face near mine and my cheeks heated up.
I stumbled back.
Am I blushing? What is blushing?! I don't have blushing in my vocabulary.
"Back away, will ya?!" I squeaked.
Dang it my voice has his own brain sometimes. I glanced around and found no one. When did they leave?!
"Oh don't tell me I made your heart flutter?"
"Dans tes reves. (In your dreams.)"
"Tu ne veux pas saviour de mes reves, lion. (You don't want to know about my dreams, lion.)" His smirk and ego was growing by the second.
"Det är inte normalt, han är galen (it's not normal, he's crazy)." I mumbled under my breath as I walked away from to the spot where my bag was.
"Galen skulle jag inte säga. (I wouldn't say crazy)" He said and I halted.
I didn't know he could speak a lot of languages. Then again do I know anything about him.
I on the other hand loved learning new languages. It's so fascinating to hear different words.
I wanted to be polite and insult him in a language he doesn't know but I guess not.
"Is there a language you don't know so that I can insult you privately?" I said narrowing my eyes at him.
"I'm talented like that." He smirked. Again.
Him and his stupid smirk.
I turned around and walked towards the door, not wanting to continue this convo any longer.
************
I sat in the cafeteria alone because I couldn't wait for my slow friends. I was starving and a girl gotta have her food.
I was enjoying my sandwich as I eyed the nature from the window when I girly voice intrupted my peace. "You again."
What did I do now?
I know I'm pretty famous for standing up to popular kids, they need someone to set them on the straight path but I didn't do anything today.
I mean what can they do? Kill me? Pfft.
I looked up and found Zahra in front of me. I would say her hazel eyes were pretty without all the eye shadow covering her eyes and her small face caked up with foundation.
Yiikes...
She had a turban showing half of her hair to the world as always. Is that even a hijab?
And yes, you guessed right, she the Barbie in our school but the muslim edition.
I looked back at my sandwich and brought it up to my lips. Food before drama. But I paused when she spoke up.
"I thought I told the rules the day you came here. Stay.Away.From.The.Guys."
It's true, last year we moved to New York so I began going to this school, on my first she rambled some rules to follow in here. I was never one to follow rules. The guys, Amir, Lucas and Keith is the three mafia. I call them mafia because they are always together like a mafia gang.
Uggh I'm bored and my face probably showed the same, that would explain why her face became red with anger.
I smirked.
"Is there something funny?" She said low.
"Yes, your stupidity, thinking I would follow your 'rules'. Now I don't have time for you so move. I have sandwich to finish." Before I could eat I saw a flying hand flying to slap me but I was fast enough to catch it.
She flushed with embarrassment.
"Look, I heard you and I immediately made a rule of my own." I warned her felling my anger rising.
"Don't.Mess.With.Me. Got It?"
Latifa ,Sabrina and Scarlett came up to me.
"Is something the matter?" Latifa glared at Zahra. Scarlett and Sabrina stood on each side of mine.
"She was just leaving. Right?" I smiled at Zahra making her scramble away.
"What was that?" Sabrina said.
"Just the old drama. Let's eat." I said and took a seat, noticing the cafeteria's attention on us but I ignored it.
**********
"YOU'RE GETTING MARRIED?!" Scarlett screamed.
"Shhhhhh" I hushed her looking around the park. "No one can know this. I don't want to spoil my life."
"Why Amir tho? The bad boy in our school, just how interesting is your life?" Latifa said.
"I don't know ask Dad, I swear my life is not that fun. Having to marry the only guy I dislike in this world."
"He's not that bad." Sabrina blurted out.
Our head snapped at her and said in unison "You serious?"
"What? Give the guy a chance."
"You finally lost it sis." Scarlett shook her head.
My phone rung, displaying on the screen that it was dad.
I picked up. "Yes father?"
'Layla come home fast, we need to discuss some matters.'
"Okay, I'm coming." I hanged up.
"Guys dad want me home. I need go." I turned to the girls.
"Maybe, you're setting the date together." Latifa wiggled her eyebrows.
"Don't jinx it." I hissed.
"See you tomorrow." I waved and went to my car. They waved back.
Throughout the ride I thought about the marriage.
Am I really getting married?
How is it going to be?
Does Amir want me as a wife?
Do I want Amir as a husband?
We can always divorce but that would be a shame for my family.
Am I ready? No Layla, you're doing this for your parents. But why does Amir do it?
I reached home before I knew it and entered the front door.
"Assalamualeykum." I greeted the house and strolled to our living room.
There I saw my parents, Amir and his father sitting together.
"Layla come sit down. We have matters to discuss." My mom patted the seat beside her. I took a seat and made an eye contact with Amir.
He looked serious. He never get serious.
I force my eyes to focus on my father.
And he said the exact same words as Latifa.
"We need to set a date for your nikah."
