Chapter Seven

When night fell they decided to stop for the day and retire to a cave.

Mizuki was realizing that they were getting closer and closer to Rivania and he had no idea what he would do once they reached.

Hand over Eren to his father?

What would happen to Eren once he's in the walls of Rivania?

Would he get punished?

Would he get killed?

Mizuki's heart wrenched at the thought of Eren getting killed.

He had gotten to know Eren in the last few days. To him, Eren wasn't some woeful Royal member of Yarisha.

To him, Eren was the freckled boy with honey eyes and a blinding smile. He wanted to see the light in his eyes return. He didn't want to see tears in his eyes once again.

He wanted to see him happy.

That was when Mizuki realized he was fucked.

Royally fucked.

"Goodnight." Mizuki turned to see Eren walking to the back of the cave.

They had found another blanket this time and so there was no need for them to sleep next to each other.

Mizuki tried to tell himself that he wasn't disappointed.

He sighed and slid to ground as he draped the blanket over himself and rested his head against the wall.

He tried to sleep but his mind was wide awake and his eyes kept straying towards where Eren was.

After a couple of minutes Mizuki heard the sound of shuffling  and then Eren was walking towards him while holding the blanket with his tied hands.

"What's wrong?" Mizuki asked raising his eyes to meet Eren's nervous gaze.

"Can-can I sleep here?" He stumbled over his words and Mizuki could have sworn that he was blushing in embarrassment.

"Why?"

"I-well-I just." Eren stopped talking before he turned around. "Never mind, forget I said anything."

"Eren." Mizuki said, it was the first time he said his name and he couldn't deny how much he loved the sound of his name leaving his lips.

"Come here."

Eren turned back around and immediately shuffled closer to Mizuki before sitting down next to him and getting under his blanket.

"Thank you." He whispered and Mizuki felt as if his heart was pounding out of his chest.

When Eren fell asleep Mizuki didn't even try to convince himself out of it as he grabbed his face and once again placed him on his lap.

Eren wasn't bad.

He wasn't like the other vile rulers in Yarisha.

He was good.

The next day Mizuki was proved wrong.

When he woke up Eren was gone. Mizuki shot up from his sitting position and called out to him but was only met with silence.

Fuck. Did he run away?

Mizuki grabbed his things and ran out of the cave, leaving Niko and started walking instead, telling himself Eren mustn't have gone far.

After a couple of seconds he heard groans and sounds of people fighting and he stopped. His fear and panic grew as he walked closer and closer to the sounds.

His eyes widened when he saw a body laying on the ground.

Was it Eren?

Mizuki couldn't believe that he felt relief when he recognized the uniform from his own country

He was glad that it wasn't Eren.

At that moment it didn't even register that it was one of his own soldiers.

But then his eyes raised to Eren who was holding his bow and arrows and another man who was across from him.

And it wasn't one of his soldiers.

It was a soldier of Yarisha.

Someone who could help Eren.

Did they kill my soldier?

But before Mizuki could move Eren drew back the bow and shot the arrow, sending it straight through the man's chest.

"Eren!" Mizuki shouted running over to him, his body filling with shock at the fact that Eren just killed a man.

A man from his own country.

"Mizuki." Eren gasped, dropping his bow as Mizuki grasped his shoulders.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?" Mizuki shouted, making Eren reel back.

"W-what do you mean?" Eren stuttered as he looked around himself, his eyes settling on the dead man.

"Why did you leave the cave? Why did you fucking leave just to kill someone? Someone you're supposed to protect!" He yelled loudly making Eren stumble back.

"M-Mizuki stop." Eren whimpered but Mizuki didn't.

"I thought you were good. I thought you were different." Mizuki chuckled darkly. "But you're not! You're not good in fact you're worse, so much worse."

"STOP!"

Mizuki stopped talking when Eren screamed, hitting him on his chest.

"J-just stop."

Eren's eyes filled with tears and they fell down his cheeks as a weak sob left his lips and Mizuki felt his heart leave his chest.

"Eren-"

"D-did you think I wanted to do that?" Eren cut him off.

"Do you think I enjoy k-killing someone? That it brings me joy? I didn't even want to be here in the first place." Eren said in between heavy breaths as he tried to stop himself from crying but then another sob left him and his knees failed him as he fell to the ground in a heap.

Mizuki dropped to his knees as he grabbed Eren's face and his heart broke as more tears fell from his eyes.

"You're r-right." Eren cried. "I'm worse, so much worse. I-I shouldn't be here."

"Eren-no." Mizuki whispered as regret filled him.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry I shouldn't have yelled." He apologized but Eren kept crying.

Mizuki hesitantly moved closer and then he wrapped his arms around Eren, pulling him to his chest as he continued to shake with soft, broken cries.

"I'm so sorry." Mizuki told him. "Please stop crying."

But Eren didn't stop crying.

No matter how much Mizuki begged and apologized, Eren couldn't stop crying.

It was like he was holding his tears in for so long and Mizuki just triggered him and now the dam broke.

Mizuki pulled Eren closer until he was basically in his lap and he rubbed his back as he kept whispering soft apologies in his hair.

After a while Eren's cries stopped and he was softly hiccuping.

Mizuki was about to apologize again when Eren pushed him away and stood up, wiping his cheeks away from any traces of tears.

His face was flushed and his eyes red and rimming with unshed tears.

The expression on his face made Mizuki feel as if someone had just stabbed him in the chest.

The fact that Mizuki was the reason that it was even there in the first place made Mizuki feel so much worse.

Eren turned around and Mizuki stopped him by grabbing his wrist.

"Where are you going?" He asked.

"I'm not gonna run away, so let me go." Eren hissed and pulled his wrist out of his grasp and continued to walk away.

"Eren, wait."  Mizuki said as he grabbed their things and ran after him but Eren didn't stop.

"Eren."

"Stop talking to me!" Eren yelled and Mizuki flinched.

They walked back to the cave, a tense silence settling  in between them. Both of them were filled with emotions begging to be released.

Eren with anger and other unreadable emotions and Mizuki with pure guilt.

When they reached the cave Eren disappeared at the back of the cave without a word and Mizuki frowned, not knowing what to do.

He really messed up.
