âââ Fight âââ
I felt as if my feet had been glued to the floor as I watched Jasper get off the ground. I was still shocked by what had happened. Edward started moving towards Jasper. I wanted to demand that he stop, or to try and hold him back no matter how futile that would be. I was stuck in place, however.
Jasper got into a a fighting stance. His eyes were locked on Edward and his breathing was even. My mind briefly thought it impressive that he could switch from kissing to fighting so quickly. I suppose he had been trained to always be on gaurd. The more I thought about it the sadder it became. Maria made him unable to trust anyone. My attention was quickly brought back into the present as Edward got into a low stance. I cleared my head of my previous thoughts and focused back onto the fight.
They were both growling loudly, the sound resonated through the house. Edward began to stalk forward.
"Edward we can't fight here, Bella could get hurt." Jasper stated loudly, not moving from position.
Edward ignored him and continued to slowly stalk towards him.
"This isn't what Bella wants! Can't you see that!" Jasper yelled.
"I'M WHAT SHE WANTS!" Edward roared. I'm sure the noise could be heard for miles. He was a blur as he charged at Jasper.
A sound, like thunder, echoed through the house as the two collided. I ducked behind the couch, finally being able to move again.
I couldn't see what was happening between the two. They were both blurrs of speed. Jasper had apparently been holding back when he had fought Laurent. They were moving so fast I couldn't tell them apart, making it impossible for me to determine who was winning and losing. I felt completely helpless as the two brawled.
Furniture and walls were demolished if they got in the way of the two. I was terrified that I would be ripped to shreds if I got anywhere near the battle.
"Stop! Stop it!" I pleaded desperately. Tears swelled in my eyes and I blinked them away trying to see them more clearly. My voice was drowned out by their snarls and the sound of them hitting each other.
A window crashed and their fight was moved outdoors. I quickly moved to the broken window. Somehow watching was better than hiding. At least this way I could see if someone were hurt. I kept begging them to stop, but I was completely ignored.
The fight lasted what felt like an eternity, and it didn't have an ending in sight. They seemed evenly matched, as far as I could tell. Would this ever end?
I jumped and screamed as a figure appeared by my side. I relaxed when I saw that it was only Esme. She had a worried look on her face. She said nothing as she took my hand and pulled me into a protective hug. I began to quietly cry into her shoulder. This was all my fault.
Her body was stiff as she watched the fight. I tried to turn my body so I could see what was happening. Not knowing was killing me.
I saw one figure tackle the other into a tree, making it crash to the ground. It seemed like he had the other pinned to the floor. I squinted in an attempt to see them clearer. I almost sighed in relief when I saw the figure on top had light blonde hair and the one on the bottom copper. I was relieved that it wasn't the other way around.
Esme gasped quietly. She let go of me and took steps closer, I wasn't sure if she was aware that she was moving. I began to walk closer to the fight myself.
Edward screamed in pain loudly, I could hear it clearly despite the distance, I wasn't sure what Jasper had done to elicit such a noise. That had been too much for Esme and she ran towards them. Another vampire shot past me and even Esme. They hit Jasper off of Edward, seemingly, with all their strength.
I screamed in shock. I threw away all sense of self preservation and began running towards Jasper. I had never despised being human more than I was right now. I had to get to him and my legs were not fast enough.
I vaguely acknowledged that Esme had run to Edward's side. I didn't pay them much attention as I continued my sprint towards Jasper. As I got closer I could see the vampire who had hit him away from Edward. It was Carlisle.
As I got closer I hardly recognized Jasper. His eyes were locked on Carlisle, they were black and unfeeling. He looked like a predatory animal, and no longer like the kind, easygoing man I knew. Carlisle was trying his best to match Jasper's skills, but he was quickly failing. It was clear who was going to win this fight.
I didn't dare get any closer. It was less frantic than the fight with Edward, but it was just as dangerous.
It didn't last long. Jasper had Carlisle pushed against a large boulder and he bit him. I yelled out before I had a chance to think, "Jasper! Jasper! Please stop!" I begged him. I knew this wasn't something he'd want.
He seemed to pause for a moment. Had he finally heard me? In the moment of hesitation Carlisle pushed him away. He hit the ground with a thud, kicking up a cloud of dirt. He was quickly on his feet and looking ready to kill in seconds. I honestly thought he might end Carlisle if given the chance. Before he could Emmett grabbed him from behind, locking him in place. He had arrived just seconds ago with Alice and Rosalie.
Jasper thrashed in Emmett's arms for a moment, his growls echoing across the demolished lawn. I knew it was foolish but I couldn't help myself, I walked up to him. I hated seeing him like this. It wasn't who he truly was. I could feel everyone's gaze on us, but I didn't care about them.
Jasper glanced up at me through his disheveled hair. His eyes seemed to lighten in shade, and there was clear recognition in them. His head lowered and his gaze returned to the ground.
"Let me go." He said below a whisper.
I looked up at Emmett who was looking at Carlisle. Waiting for permission, I assumed. I turned my attention to him as well. Carlisle was holding his neck with his left hand over where Jasper had bit him. He was still for what felt like an eternity. His head finally dipped into a minuscule nod. Emmett released his hold on Jasper.
For a fraction of a second everything went quiet. We were all waiting for whatever Jasper would do next. I took a few more steps toward him. I tried to take his hand but he moved it away. Instead he started tugging at the band on his wrist.
"Jasper, what have y-" Carlisle began to say, but Jasper held his hand up to silence him.
He went back to undoing the band on his wrist. It slid off his arm and he held it out to me. His eyes met mine again. His expression sent stabs of pain into my chest. He looked lost.
When I didn't move he took my hand and fastened the large, leather band on my wrist. I could see it more clearly now. It was almost two inches wide and had, what I remembered as the Cullen crest, engraved into the center of it.
I looked up at Jasper. His eyebrows were furrowed as he fastened the jewelry to fit my wrist. He slowly released my hand once he had finished, his fingertips brushing over my palm.
Jasper straightened his stance and his shoulders rose in a protective manner. He looked directly at Carlisle. "She is a Cullen. She is part of your coven. You will not leave her again." He stated leaving no room for negotiation.
I watched on in awe and admiration. I was speechless. What was he doing?
Carlisle glanced over at me, I didn't need to be an empath to tell that he was confused. His eyes landed on the cuff secured around my wrist.
"Jasper, I don't understand. What are you doing?" He asked.
Jasper met Carlisle's eyes, in almost a challenging way, "I thought it was obvious. I'm leaving. She's taking my place."
Rosalie's loud voice startled me, "No! Jasper you can't just up and leave!" She protested.
"Rose..." Jasper sighed.
"For what! Don't tell me you're abandoning us over that damn human girl! Look what she's done to us!" She shouted.
"This isn't her fault! What other choice do I have, Rose? I have to leave, I never said that I wanted to!" He shot back. He turned his gaze back to Carlisle. "It's me or Edward, and it's clear who would win that fight."
"Jasper, son-" Carlisle began, but was interrupted by Jasper.
"I've never been your son Carlisle, you know that." He mumbled.
Carlisle stood with his mouth slightly agape; too shocked for words, I could relate at that moment.
"We can talk about this." He finally managed to say.
"There's nothing to talk about. I'm not a Cullen and she is. Your loyalty applies to her, not me. Can you manage that, or will Edward's vote overrule yours like always?" Jasper questioned, he had a subtle undertone of being condescending in his words.
"Jasper, what are you implying?" Carlisle asked, his voice taking an edge. This is the first time I had seen Carlisle as anything but calm and collected. Even his previous fight had a sense of grace to it.
"I'm not implying, I'm stating that Edward runs this coven. If anything you're his second."
Jasper turned to look at me. His eyes were pained. This was hurting him more than he was letting on. If a vampire could cry, he might have.
"I think it's time for me to take my leave." He whispered. I didn't understand. Where would he go? This couldn't possibly be permanent. He promised he'd never leave me.
A small sound came from my throat, that could only be called a whimper. I looked up at Jasper's sad eyes and he gave me a halfhearted smile before bolting into the surrounding forest.
I looked around at the Cullens gathered around. I waited for them to go after him; for them to bring him home. They had to stop him. They were all still. I focused on Alice. She would do something. She had to do something.
"Where's Jasper?" I heard Esme faintly say. She had been helping Edward, so apparently she hadn't heard what had happened.
Tears were beginning to stream down my face. I looked up at Esme, begging her to go after Jasper. Instead I saw Edward staring at me.
A sick feeling settled into the pit of my stomach. I was sick with rage. He had ruined everything. He had been controlling me since the moment I had met him, and no matter how hard I tried he still dictated everything!
I was done. I was done with him.
I felt a cold touch on my arm. Alice stood at my side her hand gently grabbing my arm. She nodded her head in the direction of the Mercedes. She was asking me if I wanted to go home. I nodded my head immediately. I wanted to be as far away from these people as I could.
She smiled a minuscule smile and began leading me to the car. I could hear the faint whispers of the Cullens behind me, but I couldn't care less about what they were saying.
"Bella." Edward called to me. I didn't turn around, I didn't even stop walking.
"Leave me alone." I demanded quietly. I said every word slowly and carefully, leaving no chance for him to misunderstand.
I got into the car and Alice drove us away.
"Why didn't you go after him?" I asked, fully aware of how rude I was being, and not caring.
Alice sighed, "I am. I'm taking you to him."
