â¡â¡ Speculating â¡â¡
We were all sat at my dinning room table. Jasper was reading the newspaper his eyebrows furrowing, me and Charlie were both eating our breakfast.
"Want something to eat Jasper?" Charlie offered. He always offered Jasper food, and Jasper always refused.
"I'm not hungry, thanks for asking though." Jasper replied without taking his eyes off the article he was reading. "Have you seen what's going in in Seattle?" He asked Charlie.
Charlie sighed nodding his head, "Yeah, it's damn scary. I've been working on one of the cases for a year now. There's no ending in sight."
Jasper nodded his head and set down the newspaper. He scanned the room quickly. He had been on edge since the night prior.
A few minutes later we were both heading for my truck. I began driving to school, waiting for him to tell me what was going on.
"Graduation is in just over a week. You ready?"
I glanced over at him, and nodded my head. Graduating was just another step on the path towards what I wanted. However, I wasn't looking for smalltalk at the moment.
"Jasper. Who was in my room?" I asked seriously.
He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, "I don't know. I couldn't recognize the scent, and their trail cuts off about five miles from your house."
"Was it the Volturi?"
"Alice would have warned us. It's not them." He took a deep breath and gripped my hand tightly. "What worries me is that they left your dad alone. It's not just some wild nomad. Whoever was in there has a plan."
"Victoria?" I questioned, beginning to panic.
Jasper looked out the window, biting his lower lip. He said nothing.
"Jasper. Do you think it was Victoria?" I repeated. I was starting to breath heavy.
"Yeah. That's the way it seems, at least."
"Oh God." I breathed. I pulled to the side of the road. I couldn't focus on driving right now.
"It's going to be okay. I'll protect you. She won't be able to come near you, I promise." Jasper whispered, pulling me into a hug.
I leaned into his shirt, and took in his scent. It was a mix of linen, and something earthy. I calmed down quickly while in his arms, but my worries did not cease.
"Jasper, you can't do this by yourself. It's too much for one person." I whispered, knowing he could hear me regardless of my volume. "You can't protect me, watch Charlie, hunt Victoria, work a job, and keep yourself fed. It's impossible."
"I can manage."
"You can't be everywhere at once."
He sighed and pulled me closer.
"I can try."
"No. You're not going to work yourself to death over me."
"I'd do anything for you, my love." He sighed.
I backed out of his hug. "Would you listen to me, please. You can't do all of this by yourself. I don't want you hurting yourself."
"What am I supposed to do, Bella? I can't just leave you and Charlie vulnerable."
"Can't you get someone to help you?" I asked, I could hear my voice shake slightly from my worries.
"Who? Who would possibly help me? I've cut all ties with the Cullens. My only other friends are across the country. There's no one to help." He ranted agitatedly. I frowned at his tone. I knew he was under stress, and he was still hurt from leaving the Cullens. I couldn't blame him too much for this. He was just trying to protect me, but I was doing the same for him.
"I could ask Jacob." I offered quietly.
Jasper sighed and went quiet. "We can try, but after what happened by the cliffs... I wouldn't hold out too much hope."
"We can try." I pushed.
He nodded his head. "Yeah, we can."
I'm sorry this chapter has taken so long to get our there, and such a short one at that. Writer's block has been a bitch. Along with me starting a new job and maintaining a new relationship, I just haven't had the time to continue this story. I'm not giving up on it, but my updates will be a little sporadic. Sorry guys, hope you liked this one though :)
