Chapter 38 of 50

Repair

Me and Jasper waited outside of Jacob's small, red house. I was supposed to be at graduation this afternoon, I guess I had missed it. That hardly mattered right now. Being here for Jacob was more important.

Another scream sounded from the house; Jake had been screaming for what must have been twenty minutes now. My heart dropped. Jasper held me closer to his body. He was trying to hide his emotions, but I could feel his concern for Jake.

Carlisle walked out of the house with a grim look. Billy turned to him for answers. Me and Jasper were also anxiously awaiting any news about Jacob.

"I had to set his bones. The Morphine will kick in soon, and by tomorrow he should be back on his feet. I'll come check on him then." Carlisle said.

Billy sighed in relief, "Thank you, doc."

Carlisle nodded his head and turned to look at me and Jasper. "He's been asking for you. You best not keep him waiting."

Without a moment's notice I was walking towards the front door, Jasper trailing behind me. We entered Jacob's room quietly.

He was sprawled across his bed, his breathing was shallow and he was sweating profusely. He glanced up at me and Jasper and smiled slightly. He tried to sit up, but the pain must have been too great, so he didn't get very far before flopping back down.

"Hey," I moved so I was stood at his side.

"Hey," He breathed.

"God Jake," I whispered, "are you all right?" I knew it was a stupid question considering the condition he was in, but I wanted his assurance.

"I'm just peachy, Bells." His chuckle turned into more of a gasp of pain.

Jasper moved closer to me and took my hand. "You aren't looking so hot, mutt." His usually condescending nickname sounded much more sincere than usual.

"You're one to talk," he coughed, "h-have you looked in a mirror recently?"

Jasper chuckled softly. I was relieved at their banter. I was glad to see Jake joking around and acting like himself, at least a little bit.

A strong wave of serenity erupted form Jasper filling the room. It nearly put me to sleep. Jacob was obviously fighting the same feeling. His eyes were nearly closed and his breathing became deeper.

"You look h-happy," Jacob said to me.

I nodded my head slowly, "I am happy."

"Really?" His words were slurred like a drunk.

I nodded again. He didn't react, only shifting his focus to Jasper.

"Y-You'll take care of her?" He asked almost silently.

"With everything I have." Jasper promised.

Jacob sighed and gave a half nod, before finally submitting to Jasper's gift and falling asleep.

We stood there for a moment just watching Jacob sleep. Jasper kept running his thumb over my knuckles; I wasn't sure if it was meant to soothe me or him. After a few minutes, we walked out of Jake's house.

Jasper and I began our walk back to his room at the edge of Forks. We walked silently, both of us having a lot to think over.

As soon as we were in the privacy of his room Jasper scooped me into his arms. He ran his hands down my body - he softened his touch around the bandage on my arm. He didn't say a word as he looked over me. Moments passed as I watched him completely absorbed in me. I felt my face flush; no one had ever looked at me the way Jasper did.

"We did it. You're safe." He whispered, relief clear in his voice.

I embraced him tightly, "You did it."

He swept me off the floor and layed us down on his bed. It was my turn to look him over. I carefully pulled off his shirt, so I could look at his shoulder. I cringed as I saw the ragged wound healing on his shoulder.

"Jasper," I whispered, "that looks terrible. Does it hurt?" I wasn't sure how quickly vampires healed.

"Not too badly," He assured me.

I nodded my head and brushed my hand over his cheek. His skin had new scars embedded in it that I hadn't seen from far away. I frowned. I hated that he had gotten hurt protecting me. I wished I had been there to help instead of having to hide. It seemed I was destined to play the damsel in distress.

I wondered when Jasper intended to change me, if ever. I knew I could ask him, but I remembered vividly how upset that particular question made Edward. I knew there was no comparison between the two, but there was still something deep inside me screaming not to say a word about becoming immortal.

I shouldn't be so bothered by this though. I knew I had to be changed eventually or killed. Edward wasn't even here anymore. I would never have to deal with him again.

I snuggled in close to Jasper. I took deep breaths as I held him in my arms. I decided to just drop the topic all together.

Jasper began kissing my neck sloppily. I closed my eyes and allowed myself to be lost in the moment. I was exhausted from the last few days. I needed time to unwind and relax. I let go of all my worries.

This time everything really would be perfect.
