âââ Movies âââ
"Oh hey Jake! You ready to go?" I asked. Jacob stepped inside and out of the rain. I closed my front door behind him.
"Sure, sure." He smiled.
"I think Mike is picking us all up."
"Gotcha." He smiled, and walked into the kitchen. He leaned against the wall and shoved his hands in his jean pockets casually.
"Wanna sit down for a while, I can get you something to eat?" I asked.
"No I'm fine. Haven't been hungry." He shrugged. He hadn't eaten anything the night prior either. I wondered why. Jacob was always hungry.
We talked casually until there was a knock on the door, at exactly seven. I got up and answered it. Mike was standing on my porch looking distraught as Jessica lectured him on something.
"I'm telling you Mike. 'The Pearls of Desire' is the movie we should see. Do you know how high reviewers are rating it? It would be a crime not to see. I don't want to watch a horror movie Mike. I don't. Don't be stupid." She rambled.
"Hey Mike. Hey Jessica." I greeted.
Mike smiled slightly. I held out my hand inviting them to come in. Mike walked inside quickly, trying to put as much space between him and the ranting girl as possible. I didn't blame him.
"I'm Jacob Black." Jacob introduced himself, holding his hand out for Mike to shake. He shook it hesitantly and mumbled a small:
"Mike Newton."
"We aren't really seeing that pathetic romance movie, are we?" Jake asked, his smile never fading.
Mike shrugged his shoulders and jerked his thumb in the direction of Jessica, who was still going on about The Pearls of Desire. Mike looked exhausted, and I'm pretty sure I knew the reason. Jessica appeared to really be giving him an earful. I couldn't imagine what it was like to be in the car alone with her.
"Well, me and Bella want to see 'Children of The Dark'. Right Bella?" Jacob asked me.
"Uh.. yeah." I said. I really didn't want to see either movie, but I wanted to see the romance movie the least.
"Well, then we'll see that one." Mike said, a small smile returning to his face.
"What? Mike you can't be serious!" Jessica protested.
"Well, we all want to see it, but maybe we can see that other one next time?" I suggested. Jessica rolled her eyes and crossed her arms with a huff.
"Fine whatever." She mumbled.
"Are we ready to go then?" Jacob asked. Me and Mike nodded our heads.
The drive to Port Angeles was long, but not at all quiet. Jessica talked constantly, and I was relieved that I didn't have to keep up a conversation. Jessica did enough talking for all four of us.
We got there eventually and pulled into the parking lot. We all got out of the car, and walked in. We purchased our tickets and sat down. Jake left to get us all snacks. I had volunteered to go with him, but he insisted that I should just stay seated.
"I still can't believe we are seeing this movie. I hate scary movies. We should have seen 'Pearls of Desire'. It would have been so much better." Jessica ranted. I had to stop myself from telling her to stop talking. Mike had paid for her ticket, it was a free movie for her. She didn't need to be so ungrateful.
Jake came back with his arms stuffed with popcorn and sodas. How he managed to carry all of it was beyond me.
"Jeez Jake, I could have helped." I chuckled, taking my popcorn and soda. He handed the other two their snacks and waved his hand through the air, dismissing my idea.
"I made it here, right?" He laughed, his face lighting up with his large smile.
"I guess." I chuckled.
Jake sat down and soon the movie started. Mike and Jessica screeched at everything even the tiniest bit scary. Sometimes I couldn't tell their screams apart. Jacob was laughing at all the gory scenes, while I remained silent. Not much really scared me. Once you had been hunted across the country by a bloodthirsty vampire, it took a lot more to actually scare you.
Jacob tapped my arm lightly. I turned my attention to him. I could barely make out his grin in the dimly lit theater.
"You okay? You're quiet."
"Oh yeah. Fine." I answered in a hushed voice. Jake's hand barely brushed against mine. His skin was scorching. I had never felt someone with skin so hot.
"Jake? You're burning."
"Hmm? What do you mean?"
"Your skin, you must be sick or something." I said, and touched his face lightly. How could he have this high of a temperature? There was something seriously wrong.
"I'm fine." He whispered.
"No Jake, come on. I think we should leave, just for a second."
"Okay Bells." He chuckled and stood up. I followed him into the aisle.
"Hey! Where are you guys going?" Mike asked.
"Jake is sick, we are going into the lobby for a second. We'll be back." I assured him.
"Well I'm coming with you." He said quickly, obviously upset by the movie. Jake snickered from behind me.
"You are not leaving me here alone!" Jessica snapped, earning her shushes from the rest of the audience. We all ducked our heads and shuffled out of the dark theater.
We walked into the warm lobby, and Mike and Jessica plopped down on one of the benches. They looked horrified. Apparently the movie was too intense for the both of them.
"I'm really okay, Bella. You don't have to worry about me."
"Are you kidding Jake? It feels like you could spontaneously combust at any second!" I said. How was he not worried? I'm sure he didn't feel well.
"Maybe we should just take a walk in the cold air, go to dinner or something. I doubt those two marshmallows want to go back in there anyway." He snickered. Mike gave him a dirty look, but said nothing.
"Okay, if you're sure."
"Yeah Bells. Don't worry so much about me." He smirked. I shoved his chest playfully and stood up.
"I'm not worried.. just concerned." I said. Jake chuckled lightly and shook his head. I stood up ignoring him.
"Can we just go?" I asked.
"If you want to be alone with me, you can just ask." Jake grinned. I rolled my eyes and walked towards the door.
"Let's go Romeo." I scoffed. Mike and Jessica were already walking out the door, trying to escape the horror movie that was still playing in theater number three.
"Well at least I'm better than Cullen. I would never leave you like that." He mumbled quietly.
"That's enough Jake." I snapped.
"I'm just saying."
"I know. I just.. I can't handle the reminder."
"He really has gotten you shaken up, hasn't he?" He questioned, his eyes filling with concern.
"A little bit, yeah." I sighed.
"Dick... I'm sorry Bella."
"It's fine, don't worry about it." I said, trying to move away from the topic as quickly as possible. We walked out of the movie theater and into the dark street.
We walked past a group of very drunk men, hanging around their motorcycles. They all stared me down making me uncomfortable. I stole a glance at them, and my worry started to grow. They were staring at me like I was a piece of meat in a butcher's shop. Ready for the taking.
"Keep walking." Whispered the voice I longed to hear. I paused and listened for it to speak up again, but it never did. How had I heard Edward? He was gone, he left me.
"Everything okay Bella?" Jacob asked. I nodded my head and continued staring at the men.
"Just thought that I heard something." I mumbled. Jake looked at me with growing concern.
"Let's go Bella. I don't like how they are looking at you." Jacob whispered wrapping his arm around my shoulder. He started herding me away from the men, and I allowed him too. I was still stunned by Edward's voice.
We met up with Jessica and Mike in his car and we drove home silently. We had decided to skip dinner, because of how sick Jacob was. He was only getting worse. Apparently, Jessica had been scared silent. Mike dropped me and Jake off at my house, and Jacob left from there.
I checked the mailbox before I went inside. Nothing.
I got ready for bed, and climbed under my blankets. I swore to myself that I would never accept an invitation from Mike again. That was the strangest night I had, had for a while, and I never wanted to repeat it. I still couldn't get the haunting voice of Edward out of my mind, and I was thoroughly confused on how I had heard him in the first place.
