âCassandra?â
Harry paused for a moment when he heard the name.
He shook his head, chuckling self-deprecatingly. âNo, Iâve read her letters. She shouldâve been long gone by nowâ¦â
The unicorn let out a low hum and shook its head. âNo, thatâs unlikely⦠But apart from Cassandra, isnât there anyone else youâd like to ask about?â
As it spoke, it grabbed Harryâs robes with its mouth, tugging them back and forth playfully.
âHa-rry! Ha-rry!â
A sudden realization dawned on Harry.
I knew it! No wonder this unicorn lady felt so familiar!
I knew it! No wonder she knows so much!
The familiar gesture and tone instantly reminded him of an old friend.
Hufflepuffâs Poppy Sweeting!
Harry gasped, covering his mouth in shock, his trembling hand pointing at the unicorn. âY-you⦠youâre Poppy?â
âTook you long enough to figure it out!â
The unicornâno, Poppy in unicorn formâretracted her horn and began nuzzling her head against Harryâs chest, as if venting her frustration at not being recognized by her old friend.
âBut, how⦠how did you end up like this?â Harry still found it hard to believe.
Poppy had always been human. How could she now be a unicorn?
âAnimagus,â Poppy replied. âBecoming a magical Animagus has its price⦠but honestly, I donât mind. This way, I can interact with magical creatures up close and play with them as much as I want⦠Itâs quite wonderful, isnât it?â
âIs it⦠really?â Harry didnât quite understand this mindset. Back then, Poppy had always been like thisâadoring magical creatures, even helping him and Veratia rescue a dragon from poachers.
The Room of Requirementâs magical creature sanctuary had been established under Poppyâs suggestion.
âOf course,â Poppy said, grabbing Harryâs robes with her mouth again, tugging playfully. âHa-rry! Ha-rry!â
Just like the little girl who used to pull at his robes all the time.
âBut⦠are you sure your injury isnât serious?â Harry asked hesitantly, glancing at Poppyâs wound. âItâs still bleeding. Maybe⦠I could fetch Professor Dumbledore? Heâs the greatest white wizard of our time; surely, he could lift the curse on your wound. Or maybe Professor Snape? Heâs an exceptional Potions Master, and the Blood-Replenishing Potion you just took was brewed by him.â
This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it
âHe seems much more competent than Professor Sharp, donât you think?â Poppy quipped with a smile, before leaning in closer and whispering conspiratorially. âBy the way, do you still have any Weasleys this year? If I remember correctly, the Potions professors always seem to have it out for themâ¦â
âThere are five brothers in total, all in Gryffindor,â Harry remarked wryly. âThe relationship between Snape and them? Letâs just say itâs far from harmoniousâmore like sworn enemies.â
Poppy giggled, her laughter light and tinkling. Then she added, âAnyway, letâs keep my little secret under wraps when we get back to Hogwarts, alright? You know, magical Animagi are rare, especially unicorn Animagi.â
âBut what about your curse?â Harry scratched his head.
âThatâs where you come in,â Poppy said, nuzzling her head against Harryâs face. âYouâre the heir to ancient magic. Maybe once you fully regain your powers, you can help meâ¦â
âI will, Poppy. I promise,â Harry nodded firmly. âIâll help you as soon as I can.â
âAlright,â Poppy replied, tugging at Harryâs robes again.
âEvery night, Iâll bring Blood-Replenishing Potion to the edge of the Forbidden Forest,â Harry promised. âItâs not good for your wound to remain unhealed.â
âIâll hold you to that,â Poppy said.
Suddenly, she lifted her head and warned, âBe careful. Someoneâs coming!â
Harry swiftly drew his wand and traced an R in the air.
âRevelio!â
With the aid of the Revelio Charmâco-developed by him and Veratiaâhe could see a tall, blue figure moving toward them from the bushes.
The spell revealed creatures within its range, with blue signifying friendliness and red hostility.
âItâs Hagrid,â Harry said, lowering his wand. âHeâs a friend.â
âOh,â Poppy replied with a nod.
Sure enough, a rustling sound came from the bushes, and Hagridâs massive form emerged.
âHarry!â Hagrid lowered his crossbow and thumped his chest in relief. âThank heavens youâre alrightâoh, Miss Poppy, good evening⦠Are you hurt?â
âGood evening, Hagrid,â Poppyâs ethereal voice returned. She gave Harry a meaningful glance before replying, âThanks to this young man, I was spared from being killed by a dark wizard.â
âA dark wizard?â Hagrid raised his crossbow again, scanning their surroundings.
âHeâs gone, Hagrid,â Harry said, tugging at his arm. âI drove him off.â
âReally?â Hagrid beamed at Harry. âI knew it! Youâre just as brave as your parents were, Harry. For someone your age to face a dark wizardâitâs no small feat, let alone defeating one!â
Poppy said nothing, though her eyes glimmered with amusement.
Oh, Hagrid, if only you knew how many dark wizards this âlittle Harryâ has defeatedâ¦
âBy the way, Miss Poppy, is your injury alright?â Hagrid asked again. âPerhaps we could visit Madam Pomfrey in the hospital wing?â
âNo need, Hagrid. Thank you,â Poppy replied softly. âItâs getting late, and I should be going. Harry, donât forget our agreement.â
âOf course, Miss Poppy,â Harry nodded.
Poppy shook her head fondly, nuzzling Harryâs face one last time before turning to leave.
âGoodnessâ¦â Hagrid wiped a tear from his eye, clearly moved. âI thought unicorns only bonded with the purest of young maidens, but it seems they like boys tooâ¦â
âWell, I have a pretty pure heart too, Hagrid,â Harry said, patting Hagridâs arm. âJust like you. Otherwise, Poppy wouldnât be your friend, right?â
âOh, Harryâ¦â
Hagrid ruffled Harryâs messy hair, a warm smile spreading across his face.
This kidâ¦
He always knows just what to say to warm your heart.
