Alex

Alex
u kind of left without saying anything after breakfast
Ariel
Yeah, sorry about that
Ariel
Itâs just⦠I had a conversation with your mom
Ariel
And it was kind of a lot to process
Alex
oh goddess
Alex
what did she say this time?
Alex
she never fucking learns
Ariel
Itâs not a big deal
Ariel
Forget about it
Alex
no, Iâm going to handle this
ARIEL
Whatâs the best way to avoid dealing with your issues?
Work on someone elseâs.
Which is exactly why Iâm avoiding thinking about Mariaâs ~crazy~ request by trying to help The Experiment regain his memory.
Xavi is still out there, and this man may be the key to finding him.
Iâve converted the theater room of the palace into a calming meditation center, and Iâm sitting across from The Experiment with my legs crossed.
I place my hands on his temples and take a deep breath.
~Okay, focus.~
I try to direct my energy toward him, but all I feel is a faint fizzle.
âAre you... I donât know... Getting, like, memory flashes or something?â I ask, feeling frustrated.
âNo, maybe your gift has limitations,â he replies.
He may actually be right. So far, Iâve used it to heal physical wounds, but Iâm not sure âmemory retrievalâ falls under the umbrella of my healing abilities.
âWhen you were in the lab... did you get any visions from the Moon Goddess?â I ask, remembering how she facilitated my own escape.
âI donât think so,â he says, sighing. âBut then again, my mind is such a mess that I doubt Iâd remember if I did.â
âWell, it was mostly wishful thinking anyway,â I say.
In truth, Iâve felt my connection to the Goddess waning recently.
Iâm not sure why, but itâs definitely not as strong as it used to be.
I havenât hurt or killed anyone, so Iâm not sure what the disconnect is...
How am I supposed to help this man if I donât even understand my own powers?
Xaviâs time could be running out, and Iâve made no progress at all.
âI... I do remember something,â The Experiment says, sensing my discouragement. âIâm not sure it will be of any help though.â
âWhat is it?â I ask, leaning forward. âHonestly, anything would help at this point.â
âWell, itâs... itâs not tangible, but I remember a feeling. I think from when I was held captive,â he says slowly.
âA feeling?â
âYes, like someone else was in control... like I wasnât myself.â
My stomach clenches as painful memories resurface.
Losing control.
Seeing red.
Losing all connection to who you are.
I know ~exactly~ the feeling that heâs talking about.
âThe hunters⦠They try to break you, make you forget who you are,â I say sadly.
âWell, theyâve fucking succeeded with me then,â The Experiment replies bitterly.
I clasp his hand and shake my head. âNo, they havenât. Weâll figure out who you are. I promise you.â
~I wonât give up.~
Xavier
heyâ¦
Xavier
have u made any progress?
Xavier
I canât even fucking sleep
Xavier
knowing that my heir is with those bastards
Ariel
They really did a number on the guy we found outside the pack
Ariel
His brain is fried
Ariel
But I think that heâs starting to get there
Ariel
Today he remembered a feeling from the lab
Xavier
a FEELING?
Xavier
what good does that fucking do??
Ariel
Xavier, Iâm tryingâ¦
Xavier
I know Iâm sorry
Xavier
Iâm just going crazy over here
Xavier
Iâm coming back to the Royal Pack
Xavier
I need to get away
Xavier
see u soon

Itâs pouring rain as Xavier rushes into the pack warrior barracks and slams the door behind him.
Heâs soaked from head to toe.
âJust give me a second,â I call out to him as I finish up an exercise with some new warriors-in-training.
I return my attention to the fresh-faced soldiers in front of me. âLetâs wrap up for today. Go have a drink at the White Fang. Youâve earned it.â
They grin and jab each other as they race to the door. Xavier approaches me with a smirk on his face.
âWell, youâve certainly come a long way. I still remember when you were a warrior trainee, and I was your squad leader. Now youâve become a real leader yourself.â
I blush at Xavierâs praise. Iâm not used to it.
âTheyâre a bit rough around the edges, but I guess so was I,â I reply, grabbing a towel and wiping the sweat from my chest.
I notice Xavierâs eyes lingering on my low-cut sports bra.
âYeah, but youâve really shaped up,â he says in a tone thatâs a bit too familiar for my taste.
âWhy did you come here?â I ask cautiously. âI told you that progress has been minimal on the investigation.â
I actually feel a bit guilty about that.
Between mornings with Alex, afternoons with The Experiment, and evenings with my squad, Iâm spreading myself ~extremely~ thin.
âI just thought that maybe if we put our heads together, we could figure out what our next step isâ¦â
I cock my eyebrow. That sounds like a pretty flimsy excuse.
âOkay fine,â he says, reading my expression. âThe truth is: Natalia is driving me insane, and I had to get away.â
My eyes widen. ~I definitely wasnât expecting that.~
Although, Amy did say they were having problems.
âSheâs just so distraught and hysterical all the time! Itâs just making everything worse,â he growls.
âShe lost her ~child.~ Of course sheâs distraught,â I say, surprised by his lack of awareness.
âYou donât understand,â he says gruffly. âSheâs a nightmare.â
Except I do understand.
Natalia has always been a nightmare. Thatâs nothing new.
But Xavier chose to be with her. He shouldnât be talking about her like this.
Even if it ~is~ the truth.
Xavier gives me a wary expression.
âSorry, I donât mean to vent,â he says, taking off his wet jacket and sitting down on a weight bench. âI know itâs not your problem.â
âNo, Iâm here for both of you,â I say. âWeâll find Xavi no matter what it takes.â
Xavier nods and gives me a disarming smile, his cool eyes crinkling at the edges.
âI just really appreciate that I have you to lean on in these dark times,â he says with gratitude.
ALEX
âMOM!â I practically roar as I storm into her chambers.
She startles as I tower over her, seething.
âWhat did you say to Ariel?â I shout. âI thought you approved of her now!â
âI do!â she says, ~literally~ clutching her pearls. âWhere is this coming from?â
âYou said something to spook her! I know you did!â I say angrily.
By the expression on my motherâs face, I know Iâm right.
âSo what was it? What did you say?â I ask, crossing my arms. âLetâs hear it.â
âIâI only gave her a gift,â she stammers. âYour grandfatherâs dagger.â
Now I ~know~ something strange is going on. Mom cherishes that dagger with every fiber of her being.
âWhy the hell would you give her that?â
âBecause Iâm trying to be supportive of you two!â she shouts back defensively.
âNo, I know you,â I say, shaking my head. âYou have an ulterior motive. Youâre hiding something.â
âYouâre being paranoid,â she says nervously. âIt was just an innocent gift. Sheâs a warrior for Goddessâ sake. I just thought sheâd appreciate it.â
âAnd Iâm sure you asked for nothing in returnâ¦â I say sarcastically.
âOf course not,â she replies as if sheâs offended by the very idea.
I turn on my heel and march toward the door.
âWhere are you going?â she calls after me.
âTo ask Ariel what you said,â I growl. âIâm going to find out the ~truth~.â
ARIEL
As the storm rages on outside, Xavier and I hole ourselves up in the training arena. Surprisingly, Iâm having a pretty good time with him.
âCome on, admit it! I was the only one who could match you in sparring practice!â I say with a defiant smile. âRemember that time that I threw you into the lake?â
âOh, I remember it,â he says, laughing. âI wouldnât speak to you for a week.â
He suddenly stares at me with a mischievous glint in his eye. âYou know what... I think I need to release some of this pent-up aggression.â
He stands up and grabs a pair of sparring gloves.
âAre you serious?â I ask, scoffing.
He throws another pair at my feet. âDamn straight. If you think you can take me. Come on, itâll be just like old times.â
As Xavier peels off his shirt and tosses it aside, I tense up.
Yeah, ~just~ like old times.
I remember how I used to sit on the riverbank and watch Xavier and James spar, admiring his chiseled chest and perfect fighting form.
~But that was a long time ago...~
âI ~can~ take you, Iâm just not going to,â I say, getting up and tossing the gloves back.
âFine, donât use the gloves then,â he says, standing toe-to-toe with me. âLetâs face it, youâve probably wanted to punch me a thousand times after what I did to you.â
Punching him ~does~ sound really fucking appealing.
My wolf is growling in the back of my mind. She wants a piece of him too, and I canât blame her.
Before I can stop myself, my fist goes flying into his stomach, and he stumbles backward several steps, surprised.
Iâm surprised too.
âDamn, okay. Youâre really going for it,â he says, positioning himself into a defensive stance.
~Damn right.~
~This is long overdue.~
I swing again, but this time Xavier blocks my punch.
I duck down low and kick at his feet, but he uses the edge of the ring to balance.
Xavier circles around behind me and puts me in a tight hold. I can feel his sweat dripping onto my shoulders as I squirm.
âStill as feisty as ever,â he whispers in my ear.
Using my elbows, I break out of his hold and loop my arms around his neck before I drop to the ground, taking him with me.
He lays flat on his back as I pin him down.
It feels good taking Xavier down a peg.
And it feels even better doing it with my bare hands.
âYou have no idea,â I growl lightly.
âAriel?â
I look up to see Alex standing at the edge of the ring.
And his eyes are filled with betrayal.
