The small café was nestled in a quiet corner of town, its rustic charm and warm ambiance the perfect setting for the kind of conversation Lauren knew was coming. She arrived a few minutes early, nerves fluttering in her stomach despite the familiarity of the situation. She had been here beforeâsharing meals, drinks, and moments with Camilaâbut this time felt different. More deliberate.
Lauren found a table by the window and sat down, watching the light drizzle outside as the world moved slowly around her. The sound of the door opening brought her attention back to the present, and there she wasâCamila, with her usual radiant smile, walking toward her. She wore a casual outfit, jeans and a soft cardigan, her dark hair cascading in gentle waves. But it wasn't the outfit that made Lauren's heart skip a beat. It was the warmth in Camila's eyes, the way she looked at Lauren like they shared a secret no one else knew.
"Hey," Camila greeted, sliding into the seat across from her.
"Hey," Lauren replied, her smile widening. "Thanks for meeting me. I've been looking forward to this."
"Me too," Camila said softly, her eyes lingering on Lauren's for a moment before they both turned to the menu. "I hope this place is okay. I wanted somewhere quiet."
"It's perfect," Lauren reassured her.
After placing their orders, they fell into a comfortable conversation about work, Harry, and life in general. But there was an undercurrent to their words, an unspoken acknowledgment that something had shifted between them. Neither of them said it outright, but it was there in the way they laughed a little softer, in the moments of silence that stretched just a bit longer than usual.
Halfway through the conversation, Camila set her cup down and looked at Lauren, her expression more serious. "Can I ask you something?"
"Of course," Lauren replied, feeling her heartbeat quicken.
"Last night... when we were in the kitchen..." Camila paused, her gaze dropping for a second before she met Lauren's eyes again. "I felt something between us. Did you?"
Lauren felt a wave of relief, glad she wasn't the only one who had sensed it. "I did," she admitted, her voice steady despite the swirl of emotions inside her. "I wasn't sure if it was just me."
"It wasn't," Camila said softly. She hesitated for a moment, then continued. "I'm not great at... at these kinds of things. I mean, my life is complicated right now, with Harry and work and everything else, but I can't stop thinking about you. I didn't expect to feel this way."
Lauren's heart raced at Camila's honesty. She took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the moment. "I didn't expect it either," she said, her voice just above a whisper. "But I can't stop thinking about you either."
For a few heartbeats, they sat there, the air thick with tensionâhopeful, tender tension. It was Camila who broke the silence first, her lips curving into a shy smile. "So... what do we do now?"
Lauren laughed softly, the sound filled with relief. "I guess we take it one step at a time."
Camila smiled back, and the weight between them seemed to lift, replaced by something lighter, more exciting. The uncertainty was still there, but so was the possibility of something real, something meaningful.
As they left the café together, walking side by side in the gentle rain, Lauren couldn't help but feel that they had just taken the first step toward something neither of them had expected but both were ready to explore.
