Chapter 33: Pulling Over

I Was Enchanted to Meet YouWords: 7014

A/N: this picture is killing me, like i'm actually dead. now enjoy the chap...

You know the drill, What's in italic and bold is supposed to be them talking in Croatian, but I don't trust google translate enough to actually put it into Croatian.

Nika POV

"Mama?" I spoke, my parents coming into view.

"Hey, Nika, the phone died before we could tell you," I think I knew where this was going, "That we couldn't hear you. Our internet was bad."

I felt a new rush of nervousness flow through my body, "Oh, um, are you guys in a place where it won't go out again."

They nodded their heads, "Go ahead, Niks, you're scaring us."

I was rethinking the possible outcomes. They don't ever talk to me again and I have only Tate in my life, or they're happy for me and I'll take Tate to go see them one day.

"Nika?"

"Mama...papa..." I took a deep breath in, releasing before speaking, "I'm gay."

I could feel the mood switch, the friendly, warm environment dissipating into a darker, colder feeling.

"Nika," My mom pinched the bridge of her nose between her fingers, "This is why we had second thoughts about letting you go to America."

My mouth hung open, I was glad I had stepped away from Tate, not wanting her to hear anything that might come out, "But mam-"

"No, it's not right. You were taught better," My dad stepped in, causing me to shut my mouth.

"We wanted you to have a bright future at UConn, not become one of...those kind of people."

I couldn't believe my ears; they never spoke bad about gay people. Why now they decide to show it after I came out. I wanted to scream, but instead, choose to stay quiet.

"What made you think of yourself in this way? Is someone forcing you?"

"Papa, no, I'm just like...this," I had no better way to put it. I was just like this, born this way.

"We didn't raise you that way," He huffed, moving out of frame. My mom starts to talk, "When you clear your mind of all these bad things, then we'll talk. Goodnight Nika."

They hung up, no love you's, just silence. I felt my eyes begin to water. I needed to get out of there. I walked back to the doors, Tate waiting for me. I just wanted to get out of there, no questions.

"Hey, Niks. Are you okay?" She tried to hold onto my hand, I let her.

"Nothing, let's go."

"Nika, talk to me."

"I don't want too."

"Nika, please."

"I said let's go!"

She froze, I didn't mean to yell, "I'm sorry, can we just talk about it later?"

She nodded. I felt bad, she's also let go of my hand. She didn't walk beside me to the car, she stayed a little bit behind.

"Tate, please come walk with me."

"Okay," She didn't really talk. She nodded, she hummed, she did everything but speak. I didn't like it.

"Tate, I didn't mean to yell at you."

"I know."

"My parents told me they didn't like the fact I was gay."

Her eyes widened; she froze. Her mind must've told her, but she made her way towards me, hugging me.

"Oh baby," She pulled me in as close as she could, tears threatening to fall.

"I just...I didn't think they'd take it this way. They never seemed to be that way, I just.." I broke, the tears falling, my head falling to her shoulder. She just held me, she was all I needed.

"It's okay, you're gonna be okay. I promise," She paused, "Is there anything I could do?"

I looked at her, "What do you mean?"

"Is there anything you want me to do? To try to fix it? To maybe make you feel better?"

I raised a brow, her getting the hint, "Anything?"

She slapped my arm softly, "I didn't mean that...but..."

She drug out the end of the word, sending me laughing. "I love you, Tate."

"I love you too, Nika," She stood there for a second, the car only a couple of feet away. She looked over at it, then back at me, then darted. To say the least, I was confused, but I ran after her. She jumped into the driver's seat, closing the door.

"Baby, what are you doing?" I knocked at her window.

"Just get in."

"Why?"

"Just trust me."

I nodded, making my way to the passenger side. I didn't have a clue what she had planned, but whatever it was, I hoped it got my mind off things.

Tate POV

I wanted to treat her, make her happy. She's just been told by her parents that she couldn't be herself, that's awful. Things like this make me happy to have supportive parents. I reached over to her thigh, setting my hand on it. She turned to look at me, confusing evident. I just smiled, she chuckled. Her hand laced itself with mine. Her face flushed, I decided to start complementing her. I mean, why not, she gorgeous.

"Hey, Nika baby?" She hummed, "I think you're the most gorgeous girl I've ever meet."

Her face flushed, "Tate? What are you up too?"

"Nothing, just calling my girl beautiful." She smiled, "You know, when you're on the court, I have to stop myself from running out there and kissing you. Cause tell me how someone looks so good in a jersey."

She laughs, "You're lying."

"No, I'm being for real. Like, your hair is always perfect. Your eyes just become...I don't know...fierce maybe. The way you play so hard, it's attractive for sure. Oh, and don't get me started on when you get all sweaty and stuff, why is it hot?"

She's hiding her face in her hands, "You really don't think me being all sweaty is hot, do you?"

"Oh yeah, I definitely do. To be honest, anything you do is hot," I pause, "Oh, like when you start to get mad, ughhh."

"You're joking?"

"Nope. Oh, and another thing, when you speak in Croatian....it actually does something to me," I pause, "I actually got blessed with the hottest girlfriend."

"Mhmm," She looks out the window, I wonder what's going through her head, "But you see, I have the hottest girlfriend."

"How so?"

"You know, the way you put up your hair. Or the way you wear nothing but my clothes, God do I want nothing more then to take them off."

"NIKA!"

"It's the truth. Oh, and the way you look at me. God, your eyes, they tell me everything. The way you love me, want me. I want nothing more than to look into your eyes and get lost in them."

"Nika?"

"Yes, bebo?"

"I'm supposed to be making you feel better."

She laughs, "You do that just by being here. You're everything to me, I need you."

With those words, I almost said forget the dinner and pull off on the side of the road. I didn't, but I wanted too.

"You okay bebo?"

"Mhmm," Her hand found my thigh, how did she turn this around so quick?

"Are you sure? We could pull over for a second," Okay, she was doing this on purpose.

"Nika."

She rolled her eyes, "Fine...can you pull over for me?"

"Was that you trying to get me going?"

"Did it work?"

I gave her a look, pulling over, "Anything you do is gonna work."

A/N: I honestly think nika's parents can go somewhere else with the homophobia (I'm sure her parents are super nice irl) but i did have to add it for the plot (of course).
