Chapter 6: Movies

I Was Enchanted to Meet YouWords: 11351

"There's no way you're actually making us watch this," I say sitting in the chair between Nika and Ava, Paige just on the other side of Ava.

"Oh come on, everyones talking about it, why not?" I couldn't believe her, she pulled all of us into the movie theaters to watch Saltburn.

"Yeah, have you not heard of how weird it is?" I ask back.

"It can't be that bad, a lot of people seem to like it," Nika said scrolling through reviews.

"Shhhh, don't let her know that, I'm tryna get us outta here," I say, playfully nudging her.

She puts on a fake pout, "You already tryna end the date?"

I sigh, "No, that's not what I mean, I just... you know what, this movie sounds like a great idea."

I hear a soft chuckle come from Nika's direction, making me smile, "I was joking pretty girl."

"I know, I know," Blush coating my face.

"Alright love birds, time to watch the movie. That means shut up and stuff yourselves with candy," Paige whispered, making me snicker.

As the movie starts, Nika lifts the armrest between us up, scooting closer to me. I inch myself closer to here, just so there's no space between us. This, I think, was a sign for Nika to place her hand on my thigh. It was somewhat comforting this time around.

"If you wanna lay your head on my shoulder, you can okay," Nika whispers into my ear.

I shake my head, laying it down on her shoulder. This was nice. It was different. I wanted this all the time.

I lift my head up a for sec, "Hey Nika?"

"Hmm," She moves her gaze from the screen to meet my eyes.

"I was just wondering if you would like to, um, do something like this, but just the two of us. You know, without Paige and Ava, or your team. Not like I have anything against the-" I get cut off by Nika placing her finger on my lips, to shush me.

"I would love too," She smiles, I smile like an idiot, she said she'd love too, "Also, I don't blame you if you got something against them, they can be annoying. I mean, look at that one right there." She points in the direction of Paige.

Paige looks offended, placing her hand over her heart. I laugh, laying my head down on Nika's shoulder, watching the movie.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I'll give you this, it wasn't a bad movie, it's just not my thing. Ya know what I mean," I say to Ava, holding the door for the rest of them to walk out.

"If I'm right, you didn't even watch most of it," Ava presses her finger into my arm, "You were to busy sleeping on Nika's shoulder."

"Hey, leave her alone, that movie was boring," Nika says coming up, wrapping her arm around my shoulder.

"Awww, taking up for your 'soon to be' girlfriend," Paige picks at her.

"Hey, speaking about girlfriends, when do you plan to ask the lovely lady standing next to you to be your girlfriend, hmm," Nika picks back, getting under Paige's skin.

"Dude, we talked about this," Her face was bright red, for someone so confident on the court, Paige wasn't exactly that in person.

Nika's face dropped, "Yeah, sorry, P."

I snapped my head up to face her, she looked upset with herself.

"You okay?" I asked, moving my hand to the small of her back, rubbing gently.

Her brown eyes looked down in my hazel ones, I could drop right now with how weak my knees were, "Yeah, just...I hope I didn't mess P's plan up."

I nod, "Hey, I'm sure you didn't mess anything up. If Ava ain't asking questions, she probably didn't hear everything that was said."

She nods, "Plus, you didn't say anything that could threaten whatever she has planned," I try my best to reassure her. It seems to be working.

"God, you're perfect Ta," She stops us both, pulling me into a hug.

There was no way I was pulling away from her, but I pulled away slightly to look up at her, "You feel better now?"

"Yeah, thanks to you," She kisses my cheek, leaving me a little discombobulated.

Awkward tension rose between us, letting go of each other, brushing off the little moment we just had. But really, all I could think about was her lips touching my skin. She seemed a little in her head as we walked the rest of the way to the car.

"Um, so y'all wanna go, like find something else to do? I mean, I just wanna try to get back to my dorm by 8," Paige opens her door, looking between all of us.

"I mean, what else can we do?" Ava stops, looking at me.

She wants me to come up with something else for us to do, can't she do this herself, "So, we can go to the mall, look around. If you guys have better ideas, we could do those instead," I hated trying to pick something to do, Ava just sends me a grateful smile.

"I have an idea," Nika speaks up, my eyes finding their way back to her.

"What's that twin," A look of confusion set on Paige's face, as if she somewhat knew what Nika had in mind, but not really.

"It's a surprise for them," pointing between Ava and I, "I'll text you it real quick."

A ding came from Paige's phone, "Dude, can we get in trouble for that?"

My face contorted in confusion, "Hold on, I'm not getting in trouble today. Nah uh."

Nika laughs, "You guys won't get in trouble, but me and P might if someones in a bad mood tomorrow."

"That's like 75 percent of the time," Paige thinks on it, "But, if we suck up to him, he might not be as bad on us."

"Twins thinking alike," Nika smiles, pressing her finger to her head.

I snicker, "Okay, can I ask why you call each other twin?"

"You wouldn't understand it, it's a basketball thing," Paige said, making me whip my head in her direction. Ava just laughs.

"She's right, you couldn't explain one thing about basketball to save your life," chuckles coming from everyone around me, Nika locks eyes with me.

"You know, what we're getting ready to do might help out with that," Nika's eyes gleamed with mischief.

"Nika," I say, gaining a hum in response, "What are we doing?"

"Just wait, it'll be fun," She says, being the first to actually get in the car.

"Oh god," I mumble, before getting in myself.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Paige, turn on the lights," Nika whispered.

I'm guessing Paige did just that turning the lights on to the gym.

"Oh my god," I mumbled out.

"I know right, takes your breath away. Nothing but good memories, well other than the games we lost," Nika says, standing next to me. Our arms just close enough to not touch.

"Welcome to Gampel, the home to THE amazing Huskies," Paige emphasizes by using her arms and hands, waving them around while spinning.

"This seems so much bigger without all the people," Nika nods her head in agreement, I look up at her, her already looking down at me.

"Okay, so why did you bring us here? To reminisce on old games and wins?" Ava questions, gaining attention from Paige. Pulling the girl out of her trance that this place seemed to put her in.

Nika and I were far enough from Paige and Ava that they couldn't hear us if we whispered, so Nika leans down whispering in my ears, "Watch this, she's been planning this for awhile."

I nod, prepared to see and hear what happens next. That's when Paige walks closer to Ava, taking the girls hands in hers.

"Ava, I brought you here for two reasons," Paige starts, "One being that Nika and I wanna show you guys how to play the thing we love most."

Ava looks confused, but I knew where this was headed, "And two, I want to ask you a question."

Ava's face looks worried, I wonder what's going through her head, "And what's this question?"

"Ava Rice," Paige pauses, looking over at Nika, who was sending her a thumbs up, "Will you be my girlfriend?"

Paige looked worried, Ava was shocked. As much as she talked about wanting the girl to ask her out, this isn't how I thought Ava would react.

"Uh, Ava, babe?" Paige was practically forcing herself to stand, never seen this girl so nervous on this court.

"I gotta think about it," I stare blankly at her, what?

"Oh, yeah, that's fine, think all yo-" Paige gets cut off by Ava jumping in and hugging her.

"I've made up my mind, yes. It's yes!" Paige, who was stumbling around to gain back her balance, hugs her back.

"Another win at Gampel, wooohooo!" Paige exclaims, making the rest of us laugh.

"She's been so nervous about this," Nika says, keeping the conversation between us.

"Why? Ava is so obviously in love with her," I say smiling at the interaction between the basketball player and the girl she called a friend.

Nika moves to where she was now face to face with me, "You might think that, but it's hard to tell when you wanna drop a question like that."

I look at her, a smirk on my face, "Oh, so you have had this happen in your life?"

"Hasn't everyone," She inches closer, making my breath hitch.

"I mean, I haven't," I pause, "Well, until recently."

"Have you never asked anyone out?" Nika asked, making me wanna change the subject.

"I mean, no. I haven't even been in a relationship before," I wanted to punch myself for revealing that.

"Are you serious?" Nika's eyes seemed to burn into me, I couldn't keep eye contact at all.

"Yes, she is. Like, she's never even had her first kiss," Ava yells, even though she was like a foot away from us.

Best way to put it, I wanted to end Ava right then and there. My face was blood red. Embarrassment controlling my body, leaving me fidgeting with my fingernails.

"Uh, so you wanna show us how to play basketball, or whatever," Nika nods her head, picking up that I wanted to change the topic.

"Yeah, yeah, so Paige and Ava get that side of the court," She pointed to her left, "Ava, you and I will be on this side."

I nod. Ava sends a look towards me, as if that's her way of apologizing. I look away, heading towards Nika and I's side of the court.

"Hey, by the way," Nika says, catching up to me after she left to get a ball, "I think it's cool that you haven't had your first kiss."

I stop, "Why?"

She smiles, "Cause that means your looking for the right person to share it with."

I shake my head, " Sure, I see it as pathetic."

She grabs onto my wrist, her thumb rubbing gently, "It's not pathetic, okay," I nod, "Good, because I have a, how should I say it..."

I look at her, her finger placed on her chin as if she was thinking hard.

"Nika."

"A challenge."

"Nika."

"Yes pretty girl?"

"What exactly is your 'challenge'?" I put air quotes around the word challenge.

"Thoughts you never ask," She starts running, pulling me along, "If you make so many shots, let's say 5, in a row..."

Her pausing is killing me slowly, "Nika what comes out of the challenge?"

"I'll give you your first kiss."

I was taken back a little, "I make 5 shots-"

"In a row."

"5 in a row, you'll kiss me," I finish.

"Yep, is that something you would want," Nika inched closer to my face, our noses inches apart.

I shake my head as if to say yes, "No, I need words, baby."

The new petname threatening my knees to buckle, "Yes."

"Okay let's get started than."
