Menu Kaneâs eyes widened in disbelief, her words cutting through him like a blade. Selene, however, seemed unfazed, tilting her head slightly as if surprised by his reaction.
âWhatâs with the look on your face?â she asked, her tone almost mocking.
Kane stared at the card in his hand, his voice low but filled with disbelief. âBed service? Is that what youâre calling last night?â
âAbsolutely,â Selene replied without hesitation, her voice sharp and unyielding. âAnd I must admit, you did a pretty good job.â
For a moment, Kane was silent, his gaze fixed on the card in his hand. Anger and regret wrestled inside him, but he said nothing.
Her words stung deeply, but they also dredged up memories he had buried long ago.
He thought back to the pastâthe nights they had shared, the cruel things he had said to her. He had once dismissed her most vulnerable moments with him as nothing more than âbed service.â He had even handed her his bank card as if to put a price on their intimacy. At the time, his anger and pride had gotten the better of him, and though his intentions werenât entirely wrongâhe had wanted her to have financial securityâhis words had been unforgivable.
And now, here she was, throwing those same words back at him.
âDonât overthink it,â Selene continued, her voice cold and detached. âOnce upon a time, you gave me your soâcalled âbed services.â Now, Iâve given you one night. Thatâs itânothing more, nothing less. Just take the card and move on. I know it might not seem like enough to you, but how much do you think a single night is worth? This should cover it. I never used that card because I saved it for our childrenâs future. But now that theyâre with their father, I donât need to worry about them anymore.â
Kaneâs grip on the card tightened until the sharp edges dug into his palm, nearly drawing blood. His jaw clenched, his body trembling with suppressed emotion.
âOkay,â he finally said, his voice low and strained.
Selene raised an eyebrow, her expression unreadable. âOkay? What do you mean by that?â
He raised his gaze to meet hers, his eyes filled with a mixture of pain and resignation. âIâll take it,â he said. âI deserve itâfor all the pain I caused you.â
For a moment, Seleneâs hardened expression faltered, and her eyes softened, just slightly. But it wasnât long before the anger returned, blazing in her gaze. âYes,â she said bitterly. âItâs better that way.â
But instead of pocketing the card, Kane extended it back to her. âKeep it. I donât want your money, Selene. Iâve never wanted your money. The only thing Iâve ever wanted is you.â
Selene shook her head firmly, her voice rising with frustration. âYou will never have me again, Kane. Donât you get it? Iâm done. I canât keep fighting you, canât keep telling you to leave me alone. Why are you still here, ruining my life?â
Her composure cracked, her calm mask slipping away. Rage flashed across her face, and her voice trembled with the weight of her emotions. âIf you keep this up, I donât know what Iâll do. But I do know one thingâI canât be with you. Not now, not ever.â

Menu Kaneâs heart twisted painfully at her outburst, her words like daggers sinking deeper into his chest. âWhat would make you happy, Selene?â he asked, his voice cracking. âIs it being with that man? Is that what you want?â
Selene didnât flinch. Her next words were cold and final. âEven if Grayson leaves me after what happened last night, I still wonât let you back into my life. You want to know what makes me happy?â She paused, her eyes locking onto his. âStaying far, far away from you. Thatâs what makes me happy.â
Kane staggered under the weight of her words. Her cruelty wasnât just breaking his heartâit was shattering him completely. He felt as though he couldnât breathe, the pain in his chest suffocating him. For a fleeting moment, he wanted to tear his heart out just to stop the ache.
He looked at her one last timeâthe woman he had once held as his entire world. Her face, once a source of love and comfort, now only brought him anguish. Slowly, he reached into his pocket, slipping the ring box back where it came from.
âI understand,â he said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper. âI wonât bother you again. From now on, you can be as happy as you want to be. Iâll never get in your way.â
Without another word, Kane turned and walked away, leaving behind the love of his life and the shattered remnants of his heart.
