Chapter 41 I accepted Doctor Nathanâs lunch invitation since I wanted to discuss Garrettâs condition anyway. 1 nodded in agreement.
âWe have a cafeteria for the medical staff. Would that be okay?â he asked âYeah, sure.â
We walked to the cafeteria, which was an attractive space on the left side of the lobby.
The place was spotless and welcoming. As we walked in, people in white coats glanced our way.
They showed their respect to Doctor Nathan with slight nods. He led me to the last table by the window and pulled out a chair.
âHave a seat,â he offered.
âThanks.â
After I sat down, he took the chair across from me.
He placed the bouquet on the table and called over a waiter, who quickly came to our table.
âDoctor Nathan,â the waiter greeted him before glancing at me.
I felt uncomfortable as people started looking our way. I started thinking maybe coming here wasnât such a great idea. We shouldâve gone somewhere else.
âPlease order whatever youâd like,â Doctor Nathan said, pointing to the menu on the table.
Since I hadnât eaten breakfast, I was pretty hungry. I picked up the menu, placed my order, then handed it back to Doctor Nathan. He ordered his food, and the waiter left.
âSo? How did you manage to survive? Itâs truly a miracle,â Doctor Nathan said.
I looked down at my hands on the table, then turned to look out the window, watching cars pass by outside the hospital. After gathering my thoughts, I replied, âGetting across the border was tough. But luck was on our side â it saved both my babies and me.â
âHow are they doing?â
I looked back at him. âTheyâre doing great, healthy too. Thank you, Doctor Nathan, for keeping my secret.â
âCall me Nathan â you already said weâre close friends.â
I figured the receptionist must have told him what Iâd said earlier.
I gave him a small smile. âYouâre right. If I can call you my friend, that works, Nathan.â
âIâve seen those posts,â he said.
âPosts?â I asked, confused.
âThe Iron Crown Pack Betaâs statement, and then your post about Ruby and Alpha Kane.â
âOh.â
âEveryone thought you were dead. But after seeing your pictures with the Alpha, I realized youâre living 0.12.41 41.0%
Menu âYeah. That pack is my home now.â
âHow are you managing there? What about your kids? How are you raising them? If you ever need help, just ask.â
âThanks, Nathan, I really appreciate your concern. But Iâm actually really happy there. My babies are doing great. Want to see some pictures?â
âOf course,â he replied with a warm smile.
I pulled my phone from my bag and was surprised to see so many missed calls from my brother and Beta Axel.
Nathan glanced at my phone screen and asked, âWas he telling the truth in that statement?â
I looked up at him. This man had helped me so much â I didnât want to lie. I shook my head.
He raised his eyebrows. âReally?â
âYeah.â
âThen why havenât you set the record straight?â
I shrugged and said, âI donât need to. I donât care what people in this pack think about me.â
He stared at me thoughtfully for a moment.
Then I opened my phoneâs gallery and showed Nathan some pictures of my kids, including some from when they were newborns.
âThey look like their father,â Nathan commented quietly.
I looked away and took my phone back. As I lowered my head, I bit my lip hard.
To be honest, I didnât know what to say. My parents had said the same thing.
I was lucky Kane hadnât noticed how much they resembled him.
My mind wandered to their meeting with him. They couldnât forget him â one wanted to see him again, while the other totally disliked him.
I was lost in these thoughts when Nathan spoke up.
âDid you know Kane knows about them?â
I looked at him and said, âThey met him at the airport when I was coming back from the council event.â
I frowned. âBut how do you know about that?â
He turned to look out the window and sighed. âHe came to see me a few days ago. Asked if you were pregnant when he left you at the hospital five years ago.â
My heart skipped a beat as I worried about what would happen if Kane discovered the truth.
âWhat did you tell him?â I asked hopefully.
âI wanted to lie, but he already knew their birth dates.â
Hearing this made my heart tighten.

= Menu âI told him I didnât examine you that day,â he said, turning back to me, then added, âDonât worry. Iâve deleted all records of your pregnancy from the hospital files. Heâll never find out heâs the father.â
I let out a shaky breath. For a while, I could only stare at the man sitting across from me. I knew Kane well â he probably threatened Nathan to keep the truth hidden.
We sat in silence for a moment.
Finally, I placed my hand over his on the table.
âThank you so much, Nathan.â
Nathan smiled at me, but suddenly his smile disappeared as he looked at something behind me. His eyes went wide in surprise.
