âDidnât Marcus tell me Kane rarely comes here? So why is he here now?â I wondered.
After what felt like forever, Diana broke the silence. âKane.â
He strode over and settled into one of the couches. I tried my best to ignore him, keeping my eyes fixed on my lap while listening to their conversation.
âComing to check on me?â Garrett asked. âWe hardly see you here except for pack meetings or family events.â
âSince when do I need a reason to come to my own pack mansion?â Kane retorted. âIsnât this the Alphaâs residence?â
I nearly scoffed out loud but caught myself. His arrogance only fueled my hatred.
âKane,â his motherâs voice was measured, diplomatic. âSelene has graciously agreed to help us during your fatherâs illness.
Weâve asked her to stay with us for a week. Weâre grateful for her support during this difficult time.â
Kaneâs eyebrow shot up. âStay here?â
It was crystal clear he knew nothing about this arrangement. I decided right then â one more insult from him and Iâd be back at my hotel.
âYou let someone from another pack stay here without even asking me?â he challenged his parents.
I stood up, forcing a polite smile. âGarrett, Diana, Iâm sorry. I canât stay where Iâm not wanted, especially if the head Alpha objects.â
Inside, I was cursing Kane with every word I knew.
âYouâre not going anywhere,â Garrett insisted. âThis isnât just his mansion.â
âWe asked her to stay, Kane. Your father is ill. Donât argue,â Dianaâs tone turned icy, reminding me of the strong Luna I knew five years ago.
Kane shook his head. âDonât act like I care if she stays. Iâm just asking why I wasnât consulted.â
His parents visibly relaxed at his words.
âSheâs my guest, someone I trust,â Garrett explained. âShe poses no threat to our pack, which is why I didnât consult you.â
Diana rose and took my hand. âIgnore my sonâs attitude. Heâs always like this. Who knows him better than you?â
I glanced at Kane, lounging like royalty on the couch. Though his eyes were on his father, I knew he was listening to every word.
âYouâre right, Diana. I know him all too well,â I said, bitterness seeping into my voice.
He sneered, turning to face me. âYeah, and I know her too. Iâd love to tell you both about it, but one of you is too fragile for that kind of heartbreak right now,â he said sarcastically.
My heart stopped â was he threatening to reveal the truth about my children? I needed to escape.

Inside my room, I leaned against the closed door with a sigh. âJust one week,â I reminded myself. Sitting on the bed, I videoâ
called my babies, waving when they answered.
Seeing them after this long day made my heart ache. âWhat are my babies up to?â
Their silence worried me.
âWhatâs wrong? Donât want to talk to Mom?â
Leo and Luna sat quietly on their bed, looking upset. They shook their heads.
âWhy?â
âMom, you lied,â Leo accused, his face gloomy. âYou said tomorrow, but Grandpa told us youâre staying a week.â
âBaby, donât be mad. I tried to come back, but something came up,â I explained gently.
Luna wouldnât even look at me, focused instead on her doll.
How could I explain I was with their paternal grandparents? That their grandfather was sick and needed comfort? The guilt of keeping them from their grandparents weighed heavy, but I couldnât risk losing them to their cruel father.
âIâm so sorry,â I said, tugging my earlobes â our familyâs way of apologizing. They nearly cried at the gesture.
âJust a few more days. Iâll be home very soon. I promise.â
After talking a while longer, I told them to get some sleep and ended the call.
Yawning, I prepared for bed but realized I was thirsty. Finding no water in the room, I stepped out into the dimly lit hallway.
I caught a maidâs attention and asked for water. She promised to bring some to my room.
Heading back, I heard footsteps in the darkness. I froze, then spun around. My eyes widened at the dark figure behind me, and I gasped at the sight of glowing red eyes staring back.
