= Menu Though Kane wanted to stay at the hospital, Finn convinced him to get some rest either at his company apartment or the pack house.
With both his parents at the pack hospital â his father still under treatment â Kane decided against going to the pack house.
Since his car was totaled in the accident, Finnâs driver gave him a ride to his apartment.
In the backseat, Kane stared out the window, feeling awful. His wolf was deeply disturbed by Seleneâs condition. Today had made one thing crystal clear â he couldnât fight the mate bond anymore.
He realized these intense feelings for Selene had to be because of their mate bond. It struck him how much more affected he was by Seleneâs situation than even his fatherâs illness.
When they arrived at his company apartment, the driver opened his door with proper pack protocol. Kane acknowledged him with a nod and headed for the entrance, only to find Ruby waiting there.
âWhat brings you here?â he asked while fishing for his keys.
Rubyâs eyes widened at his bandaged hands. âWhat happened to you?â
âNothing,â he dismissed, unlocking the door.
She followed him inside. âWhy are you shutting me out? Iâm your fiancée â I have a right to know whatâs going on with you.â
Settling on the living room couch, he asked calmly, âHow did you know Iâd be here?â
âI visited your dad at the pack hospital. Your mom mentioned you havenât been at the pack house lately, so I figured youâd be here,â Ruby explained, standing before him.
âHmm.â That was all he offered.
Her eyes narrowed as she noticed blood seeping through his black shirt. She leaned in to examine it, but Kane instantly grabbed her wrists. âWhat are you doing?â
Horror crossed her face when she realized the blood. âAre you hurt?â
He pushed her hands away firmly.
She winced, rubbing her wrist where the burn mark was. The sight reminded Kane of Seleneâs scar, but he quickly pushed that thought away.
âWhy are you here? Need something? Didnât I tell you to go through my secretary?â
Rubyâs fists clenched. âSo you think I only come around when I want something?â
Standing up, Kane replied, âItâs late. Go home. We can talk tomorrow.â
As he headed for his bedroom, Ruby grabbed his arm. âWhy are you avoiding me, Kane?â
He stared pointedly at her grip until she continued, âThat woman nearly broke my hand, and you said youâd handle it. Why havenât you punished her yet?â
Kane removed her hand. âYouâre not that weak. Why didnât you stand up for yourself then?â
âLike I said, I wanted you to see her true colors.â
Looking away, Kane muttered, âI donât want to discuss this now.â

Menu Kane stared blankly ahead. The questions hit home, but he knew the answer â she was his mate. His wolf wouldnât let him harm her, always protecting her despite himself.
âItâs not like that. Good night, Ruby.â
âGood thing itâs not,â Ruby pressed on. âBecause that woman has no morals. Beta Axel wasnât enough for her. She needs an alpha like you.â
Kane froze, fury rising in his chest. Before he could tell her to stay out of Seleneâs business, Ruby tossed some photos on the table.
âSee for yourself,â she challenged.
As Kane approached the table, his blood began to boil. The photos showed Selene hugging Alpha Magnus outside a hotel. One captured Magnus kissing her head, another showed Selene smiling up at him.
Kaneâs hands shook with rage as he gripped the photos, studying each one with growing anger.
