You were never meant to fall for herâ¦
My mind was stuck on those words. I stared at the door, listening to the heavy thud of boots as they echoed, coming closer. Fear found me, but it wasnât for me. I tightened my hold on her hand, drawing her behind me. âStay close, princess.â
Ryth pressed against my side as the sound of steps came closer, growing in crescendo until they were deafening. I clenched my fists and shifted my stance, ready to start swinging the moment the door opened.
But it never did.
The sound grew, then passed as the guards raced along the hallway and past the room they kept us in.
âTobias,â she whispered my brotherâs name. âItâs him, I know it is.â
She thought he was coming for us.
But she was wrong.
Her fingers slipped between mine as The Priestâs sick smile rose in my head. I donât believe you. My own desperate voice rose. Tobias isnât deadâ¦he canât beâ¦do you hear me? I shook my head. âNo.â
âNo, what?â
I closed my eyes. She didnât know, and there was no way I was going to tell her. I couldnât tell her.
Nickâs face rose to fill my mind. I could see it now, him kneeling on the ground next to our brotherâs body as he opened fireâ¦heâd kill everyone he couldâand probably been killed himself in the process.
Because of me.
I let her go and stumbled forward, bracing my hand on the wall.
I should never have gone to that goddamn clubâ¦should never have tried to kill Killion.
âCaleb?â
I didnât turn my head, I couldnât look at her. Not yet.
âWhatâs wrong?â
I shook my head as the snap of a lock sounded, drawing my gaze to the door. A guard stepped inside, scanned the room, and settled his focus on me. I said nothing, waiting for him to move. The Priest followed, that cocky grin on his split lip not as evident now that he knew he couldnât kill me. He glanced at Ryth, standing behind me. âYouâre being moved.â
I stepped in front of her. âWhy?â
âWhy is no concern of yours.â The Priestâs jaw tightened as he narrowed that stare on me. âYou wonât cause a problem, do you understand?â There was a scowl before he looked at Ryth once more. âShe seems calm, Caleb. A little too calm.â One brow rose as he turned to me. âYou still havenât told her, have you?â
I shook my head. âNo,â I growled. âI wonâtâ¦because itâs a lie.â
There was that smirk again, that knowing, fucking smirk. âIs it?â
Is it?
âTold me what?â she asked.
A twitch came at the corner of my eye. I fixed my stare on that piece of shit who stood in front of us dressed in a black full shirt and white clerical collar. He was no fucking priest. And no fucking man, for that matterâ¦he was the goddamn devil. A devil who had all the fucking cards.
âDenial wonât change the truth, Caleb,â he murmured. âAs a lawyer, you know that better than most.â
âTell me what, Caleb?â
I opened my mouth to speak, to say the words that hung heavy in my heart. The words he wanted me to say.
But I couldnât do itâ¦
âI can tell her, if you prefer?â the devil murmured.
âYou know, that has gotta hurt.â My voice was husky as I stared at his busted-up face. âI bet it does. I bet it hurts like an absolute bitch.â
His gaze hardened to a cruel, terrifying glint.
âTell me what?â Ryth demanded.
Without missing a beat, he spoke. âYour stepbrother is dead.â He watched her like a hawk. âYes, Iâm afraid Tobias wonât be coming to rescue you, Ryth. No. He wonât be coming at all.â
Everything moved in slow motion. My knees trembled, but I forced myself to turn and face her. âRyth,â I whispered, my focus on every glintâ¦and every twitch.
âNo.â She shook her head. âNO.â
Rage burned, but I swallowed it. âItâs going to be okay.â I lifted my hand to her face.
But she pulled away, and that hurt more than anything. âNo. Donât you touch me! Thatâs not trueâ¦thatâs NOT TRUE. Do you hear me?â she demanded, her eyes growing wide. âNo. Just, no.â
âRythâ¦â
There was a tremble of her lips as her voice thickened. âNo, Caleb,â she whispered and tears shimmered in her eyes. She looked at the bastards watching us, and then justâ¦cracked.
I lunged as her knees gave way, catching her in time. Her pain was a shotgun blast to my chest as I pulled her against me. Cold, hard rage followed, the kind thatâd made me a murderer. But this wasnât about my anger. It was about her.
âWeâll get through thisâ¦â I grasped her chin and turned her gaze to mine. âYou hear me? We will get through this.â
It didnât matter that sheâd only been in our lives mere months. Because it felt like foreverâ¦
Forever that sheâd been in our hearts.
And forever that weâd been in hers.
Tears slipped from her eyes as she turned her head. She saw them and, in an instantâ¦her anguish unleashed. âYou BASTARDS!â She tore from my arms and lunged across the room.
But The Priest and the guard were already striding out of the room. She hit the door as it closed, her fists slamming against the tempered glass panel. âIâll kill you!â she screamed at them. âDo you hear me? IâLL FUCKING KILL YOU!â
Her screams resounded as she slammed her fists against the door. âIâll fucking kill you! Iâll kill youâ¦Iâll fucking kill you allâ¦â She stopped beating her fists against the door, and slumped against it instead. âIâll fucking find youâ¦â
Brutal, rasping gasps consumed her.
I closed the distance, grabbing her and pulling her into my arms.
âIâll kill them, Caleb,â she whimpered without even looking at me.
âI know, princess.â I stared through the glass at the empty hall. âI know.â
