Joong's POV
Dinner was simple, but it felt like the most satisfying meal I'd had in a while. Zee's cooking was surprisingly goodâcomforting, hearty, and just the kind of thing I needed after everything that had happened today. We ate in silence for a while, the clinking of silverware against plates the only sound.
I couldn't help but glance over at Zee now and then, watching him as he casually ate his meal. There was something about him in this momentâsomething that made me feel strangely at ease, despite the chaos of the case and everything that had happened earlier.
But then, as I finished my plate, the weight of the investigation crept back into my thoughts. The break we'd gotten today had been a big step forward, but we were still far from finishing the job. We needed to get more information about the warehouse, especially now that we knew it had a much deeper connection to the fraud ring we were investigating.
Zee hadn't really spoken much about the next steps yet, but I could sense he was thinking about it. He was always so composed, so calculated. But I knew we needed more than that if we were going to break this wide open.
I set my fork down with a quiet clink, catching Zee's attention. "So... what's next? How do we find out more about that warehouse? I don't think we're going to get in the same way we tried earlier."
Zee leaned back in his chair, taking a deep breath as if he'd been expecting me to ask. He wiped his mouth with a napkin before meeting my gaze. "You're right. That method didn't exactly work out the way we hoped." He paused for a moment, considering his next words. "But we've got other ways to get in. We just need to be smart about it."
My curiosity piqued; I leaned forward. "Other ways? Like what?"
Zee's eyes glinted with a sharp focus as he began outlining his plan. "There's a lot we can do without stepping foot in that warehouse again, Joong. First thing's firstâwe need to know who's running the place. We've got some names from our initial investigation, but we need to cross-reference those with any linked companies, businesses, or personal ties that could lead us to more info."
I nodded, taking in the details. It made sense. "Right. We can start by digging into the owners and the surrounding businesses."
Zee continued, his voice steady but more animated now, like he was excited about the challenge. "Exactly. And we have a few more tools at our disposalâsurveillance footage, financial records, even speaking with some of the people who may have been involved. There are always weak points in any operation, and it's a matter of finding those cracks and exploiting them."
I could see the fire in his eyes as he spoke. Zee had always been the methodical, reserved type, but when it came to cracking cases, there was a drive to him that I'd only seen in the most passionate investigators. It was one of the reasons I respected him so much.
"You've got a plan," I said, my voice filled with admiration. "But you've also been doing this longer than me. Where do you think we should start?"
Zee leaned forward, tapping his fingers on the table. "We start with the financials. The warehouse is just one link in a bigger chain. If we can follow the money, we can get closer to the masterminds. That's where the most tangible evidence lies. If we dig through their transactions, invoices, and receipts, we'll start to see where the flow of cash is coming from."
I felt a surge of confidence. "I can handle that. I'm good with numbers and paperwork."
Zee gave me a small smile. "I know. That's why I'm glad you're with me on this. You're sharp, Joong. And I think that's going to get us where we need to go."
The praise made something stir inside me. I wasn't used to hearing that from him, and for a moment, I let myself sit in itâlet myself feel proud. But there was still a larger task at hand. We were still piecing together a puzzle, and I didn't want to lose focus.
"So, financials first, then what?" I asked, leaning in, eager to hear more.
Zee's expression shifted slightly, turning more serious. "Once we have a clear picture of where the money's coming from, we'll need to get some eyes on the ground. Someone who can monitor the warehouse without raising suspicion." He paused and met my gaze. "We're going to need to get close to the people working there. We need someone who can blend in, ask the right questions, and get access to areas that we can't."
I furrowed my brow. "Like an inside source?"
Zee nodded, a slow smile forming on his lips. "Exactly. And I think I know just the person who can help us with that."
I raised an eyebrow. "You've got someone in mind?"
Zee leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms as his smile grew more mischievous. "Maybe. But I'll need your help to make that connection. You've got a way of getting people to trust you, Joong. You're going to have to work your charm on this one."
I grinned, feeling a surge of adrenaline. "I think I can handle that."
For a moment, there was a flicker of something between usâan understanding, maybe, or a silent agreement. We both knew that this was bigger than just solving a case. The closer we got to uncovering the truth, the more dangerous it would become. But I wasn't backing down. Not now, and certainly not with Zee by my side.
We spent the rest of the evening planning our next steps, going over all the details and making sure we had everything in place. By the time we finished, I felt a surge of determination that made me want to dive headfirst into the next phase of the investigation.
But more than that, as I looked over at Zeeâwho was meticulously making notes, his brows furrowed in concentrationâI realized something else.
I wanted to do this. Not just because of the case, but because of the partnership that was slowly developing between us. And even if it scared me a little, I knew that I couldn't pull away.
Zee and I were in this togetherâno turning back now.
