Joong's POV
It had been a few days since the dinner with Mina, and I was starting to wonder if she had forgotten about us. But this morning, as I sat at my desk going over the case files again, my phone buzzed with an incoming message. I recognized the name immediatelyâMina.
I opened the message, my heart picking up a little pace as I read her words:
The warehouse is the place. It's where everything goes through before it gets shipped out to the Cayman accounts. You were right.
My fingers hovered over the screen for a second, processing the confirmation. The warehouse, the one we'd tried to infiltrate weeks agoâeverything was finally falling into place.
I leaned back in my chair, letting out a long breath. This was it. We had the proof we needed. The piece of the puzzle that had eluded us for so long had finally clicked. The warehouse wasn't just a storage facility; it was the hub of the operation, the point where the fraudulent funds were funneled before being transferred to offshore accounts.
The next step was crucial.
I quickly forwarded the message to Zee, knowing he'd want to know as soon as possible. I didn't wait for his response. I was already making mental notes about what we could do next. The warehouse wasn't going to be easy to get into, and now that we knew its purpose, we had to approach it carefully. It wasn't just about gathering evidenceâit was about dismantling an operation that was much larger and more dangerous than we'd realized.
As I was lost in thought, the phone rang. Zee's name flashed across the screen, and I answered it almost immediately.
"Hey, Joong," Zee's voice came through, sounding a little more strained than usual. "I saw the message. It's confirmed, huh?"
I leaned forward, my mind racing through the implications. "Yeah, it's all lined up. Mina was right. This is the place where the money goes before it's sent off to the Cayman accounts. We've got them."
There was a pause on the other end, and I could almost hear Zee's thoughts running through his head. "This is big. We need to act fast. The more we know about this warehouse, the better. We can't let this slip through our fingers."
"Exactly," I agreed. "I've been thinking about how we can get the intel we need. I've got a few ideas on how to proceed, but it's going to take some careful planning. We don't want to tip them off."
"I'll start putting together a team on our side," Zee said, his voice firm. "We'll need to move quickly and decisively. I don't want to leave anything to chance."
"Understood. I'll keep working on the details here. We'll be ready," I replied.
Before I could hang up, Zee's voice softened slightly. "Joong, be careful. This is no longer just about fraud. We're getting into something much deeper now."
I swallowed hard, feeling the weight of his words. "I will. You too, Zee."
After the call ended, I sat back in my chair, staring at the case files again. The stakes had just gotten a whole lot higher. The operation we were up against wasn't just about moneyâit was about power, and whoever was behind this had a lot of it.
I texted Mina back, thanking her for the intel and letting her know we were moving forward. There was no turning back now.
A few hours later, Zee and I met at his apartment, as we'd been doing lately for case discussions. He was already spread out at the dining table, a map of the warehouse area laid out in front of him, various papers scattered around with annotations. The intensity in his eyes was unmistakable, but there was something else thereâsomething almost... anxious.
"I've been going over the plans," Zee said, not looking up from the papers. "We'll need to gather a little more information before we can make our next move. I want to make sure we're not walking into a trap."
"I agree," I said, sitting down across from him. "We need eyes on the inside, and we need to figure out exactly who's running the show at that warehouse. The last thing we want is to make the wrong move and alert them."
Zee nodded, looking up at me. "You think Mina's got anything else for us? We need to get more intel on the security measures. The layout of the warehouse. Everything we can use to our advantage."
"She's on it," I said. "She's always got her ear to the ground. I'll reach out to her again and see if she can dig a little deeper into their security setup. We might have to move quickly."
"I'm counting on you, Joong," Zee said, his voice low. There was something about the way he said it that made me pause. It wasn't just professionalâit felt personal, as if he was trusting me with more than just the case.
I met his gaze, feeling a flash of something in my chest. "I've got it covered, Zee. We'll get this."
Zee's expression softened, but his eyes remained focused on the task at hand. "Alright. Let's get to work."
Zee's POV
I could feel the weight of the situation pressing down on me as Joong and I sat in my apartment, going over the details. The case had escalated in ways I hadn't expected, and while I was used to handling pressure, something about this felt different. Maybe it was the scope of the operation, or maybe it was the subtle shift in the dynamic between Joong and me.
I couldn't ignore it anymore. There was something there, something between us that had gone from just professional to something deeper, something more personal. I could see it in the way Joong looked at me sometimes, the small hesitations in his voice when we spoke. He might not be fully aware of it yet, but I was.
I shifted my focus back to the papers in front of me, trying to bury the thoughts swirling in my head. I couldn't let myself get distractedânot now. The warehouse, the money transfers, the shady characters involvedâit was all part of a much bigger picture. The kind of picture that could get us both hurt if we weren't careful.
Joong's voice broke through my thoughts. "Zee."
I glanced up at him, meeting his steady gaze. "Yeah?"
"We need to plan our next move. We can't keep waiting for the perfect moment. If we wait too long, they'll catch wind of what we're doing." His voice was firm, but there was a hint of concern under it.
"I know," I replied, rubbing my eyes. "I'm just trying to get everything lined up. One wrong step, and we lose everything."
Joong nodded. "I get it. But we're running out of time. Mina's getting us the last of the intel, but we need to be ready for what comes next."
His words hit me harder than I expected. I could hear the urgency in his voice, the same drive that had made him so good at his job. But there was something else tooâsomething I couldn't quite place. Maybe it was the way he was looking at me, the way his brow furrowed like he was trying to figure me out.
I cleared my throat, trying to focus. "You're right. We need to move. I'll have a team in place by the end of the day, but we'll need to be careful. This warehouseâit's not just a place. It's their hub. If we screw this up..." I trailed off, not needing to finish the sentence. Joong understood the gravity of it.
"Yeah," Joong said softly, "we can't afford to screw this up."
There was a long pause, and I found myself studying Joong, watching the way his shoulders tensed slightly as if he was carrying the weight of the world. It was strange. I had always respected his dedication to the job, but seeing him like thisâso focused, so determinedâit was hard not to admire it. And I could feel that admiration turning into something more, something that was starting to blur the lines between professional and personal.
Finally, I pulled myself together. "We'll figure it out. I'll talk to the team and make sure we're ready. In the meantime, we should keep up the pressure on Mina. She's our only inside source right now."
Joong nodded. "I'll check in with her later today. But I think we need to be ready to move on the warehouse soon."
I watched as Joong gathered his things, his movements swift and efficient. He didn't waste time, and I admired that about him. But at the same time, there was something I couldn't shake off. This... connection between us, it was getting harder to ignore.
"Take care of yourself, Joong," I said before he could leave.
He paused at the door, turning back to me with a small, almost imperceptible smile. "You too, Zee."
And just like that, the moment passed. He was gone before I could say anything else, leaving me alone with my thoughts. I spent the next few hours working through the details of the operation, coordinating with the team, and going over security plans. I couldn't let myself get sidetrackedânot now.
But even as I focused on the task at hand, my mind kept drifting back to Joong. His determination, his quiet strength, the way he always seemed to have everything under controlâthere was something magnetic about him. And it scared the hell out of me.
I had spent years keeping my emotions locked away, focusing solely on my work. But with Joong... things were different.
I couldn't afford to let it get in the way. Not now. There was too much at stake.
