Sage’s  Pov.

The next morning I was humming while making breakfast, Blaze came down the stairs fully dressed, while I was still in my pajama pants and tank top. I put the pancakes on his plate and out the rest in the middle of the table for Zac and extras. I ate on my pancakes, looking up sometimes making small glances at Blaze.

I heard the front door close and Zac walked in the kitchen shirtless with basketball shorts on. He piled pancakes on his plate and talked a hole into me and Blaze. When he finally shut up I turned to Blaze.

“Why do you have such a big house when there’s only you, and occasionally Zac?”

“I’ve been thinking about it but I just never got around to making plans about it.”

“Oh,” I muttered poking at my plate, loss for anymore words.

“Yeah, well Sage I guess we’re moving into a condo.”

“But what about this house?” I loved it and I didn’t want him to sell it.

“It’ll be here for parties, family occasions and whenever we need it.” When he said ‘we’ for some reason it made me think that maybe he was thinking I was still going to be in his life in the future. It made me feel a little bit happier inside.

At about 12:00 p.m. we decided to head over to my old neighborhood and pick up my brother from his ‘friend’s’ house.

Blaze and I got out and walked into the apartment building stopping at the first door and knocked.

“Can I get my little brother, Ms. Sims?” The older redhead rolled her eyes at me, and took a step back showing my brother with his book bag waiting at the door.

My brother went to school with the little monster Ms. Sims called her son. My brother didn’t really like her son, but she was the only babysitter at the time after school or when we had to work.

“He’s had two asthma attacks since he’s been over here. We don’t want him back over anymore, too many problems.” Ms. Sims lazily told us. I was so mad you could probably see steam. She acts like we didn’t pay her for my brother to come over here. My brother told me that her son had no friends and that he was the only one that would ever come over. She was in a poverty situation more than we were so we were actually doing her a favor by paying her more than my brother was actually over.

“The boy looks like he doesn’t even want to be here, the little snot nose kid you got running in there has some major physiological problems and needs to get checked out. He doesn’t even want to be here and I doubt he has control over his asthma so don’t be such a bitch all you had to do was tell us that it was too much of a hazard to have him over here. Oh, but that was probably too complicated for a simpleton like you.” Blaze all but yelled. He grabbed my little brother’s hand and stormed off.

I followed only to glance at Ms. Sims who still had a shocked face. But that wore off when I made it to the door.

“How many times did you have to put out, to get him Sage?” She called her cackling laugh sounding through the empty halls.

I walked out to the car that sat a cooled off Blaze and my little brother who was buckled and sat quietly in the back.

I turned to Blaze, “Is that what your mother, and all your other relatives and friends, see me as?”

“What are you talking about Sage?” Blaze asked turning on the car.

“As an h-o-e” I told him spelling it out so my brother wouldn’t understand.

“Why would you think that?”

“Because Blaze it’s not every day, someone like me gets someone like you.” I told him crossing my arms over my chest.

“Does it matter what they think, Sage? This deal was for you to pretend to be my fiancé for a little while.”

“Oh, yeah you’re right. Seeing as I am a girl, I let my feelings and personal beliefs get in the way.  I forgot you’re a cold, selfish, stoic person who doesn’t care about anyone else’s feelings. I’m sorry that I don’t like being called a hoe. What was I thinking?” I told him sarcastically looking straight ahead.

“Sage,” he said his eyes softening. I ignored him and turned to my little brother.

“Okay so what do you want to do first?”

“Who is he?”

“Oh, uhm, well he’s uhm a-“I stuttered not being able to get out an answer before Blaze beat me to it.

“I’m her boyfriend.” Blaze coolly replied all I could do is glare at him.

“Oh, okay! I want to go get ice-cream!” Cory yelled happily.

Blaze drove to the nearest Ben & Jerry’s, and immediately when we walked in, every girl’s eyes were on Blaze. I simply rolled my eyes and walked up to the counter where a girl no older than 15 was starring at Blaze with google-y eyes.

“Uh, hi. I would like Karamel Sutra and my brother would like Half-Baked.”

“And I’d like the Triple Caramel Chunk.” Blaze told her.

I scrunched my eyes up in a surprised smile. “You like caramel?”

“Yeah, it’s like my secret addiction.” I smiled now knowing more about Blaze.

When our ice cream came out, and I stuck the spoonful into my mouth I groaned at the flavors, which earned a laugh from my brother and an actual chuckle from Blaze. I got a chuckle! That is progress!

“I usually don’t share food, because its gross, but I want to try yours.” Blaze only nodded, so I stuck my spoon into his ice cream while he did the same to mine.

I ate the spoonful and it actually was pretty good. “Hey, I actually like yours!”

“Well yours could be better,” he joked. We are making a lot of progress, Blaze just joked with me. Then his phone buzzed, he looked down at the message he got and back up to me.

“What’s up?” I asked taking another spoonful of his delicious ice cream.

“Hey! Stop eating my ice cream. Get your own.” He told me with an amused warning glare.

I stuck my tongue out at him; “You might get your tongue stolen, if you keep that up.” I just rolled my eyes at his comment.

“So what was that on the phone?”

“Oh, our new condo is ready, with all our stuff in it.”

“So you, never coming home?” Cory asked with a sad face. To be honest I felt bad because I completely forgot he was here.

“Well, I’ll come home sometimes to spend time with you and mom.”

“Okay,” he said a little sullenly.

“So, what do you want for your birthday party?” I said bringing up better news now that I could afford a decent party for him.

“I just want a party with all my friends.”

“Oh, so your birthday is coming up. Sage and I are going to throw you a big party, with a bouncy house, and the swimming pool, with lots of food and sweets.” Blaze told him, as he watched my brother get excited.

“Sage, is he really telling the truth? Will it really be that fun?” I really didn’t want to disappoint my brother so I just nodded with a smile on my face.

I continued to watch Blaze talk about the party with my little brother, and I could tell Blaze had a soft side for him. It made me smiled, seeing how happy my brother was talking to Blaze.

“What are you smiling about?”

“Oh, nothing just how you react with my brother.”

“Yeah, well he’s-“he didn’t get to finish his sentence before his eyes froze over and faded to a dull green, and his face went back to expressionless.

“Blaze what’s wrong?”

“Nothing, Sage. Don’t ask about it.” My brother sensing Blaze’s sudden mood change chose this time to be quiet.

“Blaze! Hey my baby,” we heard his mom speak. And that was probably the reason why he closed up all of a sudden. “Oh, and hello Cilantro, and who is this little guy? Blaze is this the reason why you’re marrying this girl? He looks a little old to be yours, and looks nothing like you.”

“My name is Sage, Mrs. Colton and no this is my little brother Cory.”

“Oh! Cory, such a normal name. What were your parents thinking when they named you Sage?” I wanted so bad to retort something along the lines of ‘the same thing yours were thinking when they named you Aurie’ but I left it alone.

“They named after the Sage plant, because of how pretty it is, I guess.”

“Mother, why are you here?”

“Well I was coming to see how my son and his future wife were doing. And I’ve heard that you two are moving into a condominium.” I was surprised she knew that the real word wasn’t just condo.

“Mother, Sage and I are doing just fine. As you can see just eating ice cream with her little brother.”

“Oh, that’s not all I wanted to invite you and Sage to the annual Colton Foundation Dinner.”

“Mother, Sage won’t be comfortable at those things, and I don’t want to go.”

“But what better way to initiate Sage into the family. I expect to see you two there. No buts Blaze, and in better clothes I hope. Maybe you should stop by my shop Sage; you might find something you’d like there.”

If this lady says one more comment about my clothes I promise I will blow up on her. But I’m always nice so I’ll let it slide.

“Oh, and I’ve heard from a Marnie girl, that you two have never kissed before. I want to see it, to make sure this engagement is legit.”

“Mom, we’re not a PDA couple.”

“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!” She started to chant getting everyone else in the Ben and Jerry’s parlor to chant with her.

Blaze was going to kiss me, and I still wasn’t ready for it. My heart was pumping against my rib cage, and my palms were sweating in anticipation mixed with nervousness. I felt like I was going to faint before it even happen. I heard Blaze sigh.

“Okay, mother.”

Blaze leaned in slowly, and came to a stop right before he kissed me. His cold breath smelled of sweet caramel and chocolate, and I still wasn’t sure if I was ready for this. I felt that I may go into cardiac arrest or an aneurism.

When his lips finally touched mine, I was spun into a caramel delight, a feeling that I’ve never experienced before. It’s like no one was around us, the sparks were flying from Blaze’s lips and running through my entire body. I was sure that when we finally let go that I would start seeing stars.

Blaze finally let go and fell back into his chair, looking back at his mom who had a smile on her face.

“That’s great darling! I will see you two at the dinner!”

For the whole time of driving my brother back home, I couldn’t look Blaze in the eye; I was embarrassed because he was the best kiss I’ve ever had in my life. Which is kind of not saying much sense only kissed one other person. But I’ve never felt that way before, it was better than I thought was possible. But I probably was only another girl on his kissing list. I wasn’t an experienced kisser, so he probably thought it was sloppy and gross.

After taking my brother upstairs and having a small talk with my mom about my brother’s party I made it back to the car.

“Sage why are you avoiding eye contact with me?”

“Why does it matter?” I asked using the response he used on me earlier.

We drove back to the house in silence, none of us wanting to talk. We pulled up to a beautiful apartment building; it looked something like out of a rich magazine.

When we got up to our floor, Zac was already there lounging on the couch.

“What took yall so long? I got bored.”

“Doesn’t matter,” Blaze grumbled and walked into what I guess was his new room. But he came out seconds later with an embarrassed look on his face, mumbling a soft ‘sorry’ and heading into the other door.

I sighed and turned to Zac, “So we kissed, and no not willingly, his mom and the whole Ben and Jerry’s basically forced us to.”

“You loved it didn’t you?” Zac smiled smugly. I rolled my eyes and fell back into the couch.
