Chapter 143: Iâm Telling You, Itâs a Really Good Opportunity! (1)
The day after the banquet, things proceeded quickly.
Under the orders of the Marquis of Branford, slave traders from various regions came to see Ghislain.
As they dealt with non-human slaves, these traders were considered major players in their field. Yet, in front of Ghislain, they all seemed to be quite nervous.
âBut... are you really sure you can handle this much stock? I know youâre interested in non-human slaves, but the numbers are too high.â
âIf your cash flow gets blocked, you could end up bankrupt. Non-human slaves have strong pride, so managing them will be difficult.â
An ironic situation was unfolding where the sellers were more concerned than the buyer, who didnât seem to have any reservations.
Ghislain responded with a relaxed expression.
âIt is ironic to see slave merchants worry about their customer. The money has been prepared, and Iâll take care of the management, so thereâs no need to be concerned.â
The slave traders exchanged sidelong glances and nodded slightly to each other.
âDamn, itâs taboo to do a big deal with a kid like this...â
âHeâs someone backed by the Marquis of Branford. Thereâs no way to refuse. I hear most of the royal faction nobles support him.â
Ghislain glanced at the hesitant traders and issued a warning.
âYouâd better bring them all, without missing a single one. If thereâs any issue... you know what happens, right?â
âOf course, sir. Rest assured. But, please make sure to pay the amount. Itâs such a large sum, itâs making us a bit uneasy.â
âIâll make the payments as agreed, on time, so just focus on delivering the people.â
Ghislain replied curtly.
Even though cosmetics were selling well, he couldnât afford to handle such a massive sum at the moment.
However, because of the sheer amount of money involved, the traders insisted that they couldnât accept installment payments without collateral.
âDonât forget that the Ferdium Estate has been used as collateral.â
âI get it. Just make sure you handle the task properly.â
âYouâve received permission from Count Ferdium, right?â
Without batting an eye, Ghislain replied confidently.
âIâm the heir there, so donât worry about it and be on your way.â
âAhem, understood. We will prepare everything as quickly as possible. See you at the estate.â
âOh, and donât forget to send the dwarves as quickly as possible. Especially the dwarf I mentionedâmake sure he arrives safely, no matter what.â
âY-yes. We will prioritize that.â
âGood, I wonât be going far.â
The slave traders left with uneasy expressions.
âDamn it, if something goes wrong, weâll have to protest to the Marquis of Branford and hold him accountable... But will he even listen?â
âIsnât the collateral estate at the barren edge of the north? Just thinking about having to sell it in pieces gives me a headache.â
âIâve sold everything, so I should feel good, but why do I feel so uneasy?â
As the slave traders withdrew, Belinda clicked her tongue and muttered.
âIf Count Ferdium finds out, heâll faint.â
âItâs fine. My father is always in a difficult spot, even without me.â
Belinda sighed deeply and shook her head.
âBuying slaves is one thing. But what about the immigrants?â
âWhat about them?â
âWeâre talking about at least several thousand, possibly over ten thousand. Weâll have to cover all their basic needs until they settle in, and thatâs going to cost a fortune.â
âItâs fine. You saw the wheat growing back then. We can handle it.â
âWhat? Do you think people can live on just bread? What about everything else?â
âIt will cost money at first while they settle, sure. But once there are more people, the market will quickly revive.â
It wasnât wrong. But that would only be possible if the underlying issues were resolved.
âWhere will people who were suddenly relocated get money to go to the market? What work can they do? They need to work to earn money and then spend it.â
âThose who urgently need money can be employed in construction projects around the estate, just like now. And...â
âAnd what?â
âIâll turn all the able-bodied men into soldiers. Our estate severely lacks a standing army. This way, thereâs no problem, right?â
â...What?â
Belinda was stunned into silence.
Saying he would turn any spare hands into soldiersâthis was on a whole other scale.
She grabbed Claude and asked, âDoes that make sense? Can that really work?â
Claude nodded.
It was a bold idea, but it was plausible. In this era, there were plenty of people willing to become soldiers if you simply fed and housed them.
The only reason others hadnât tried it was because they didnât have the money to spare.
âIf we invest all the profits from Runestones and cosmetics, itâs possible. We just need to sustain it until the economy stabilizes a bit, and it should run smoothly on its own. However...â
âHah! Looks like youâve finally picked the day to die! What a fine day it is!â
Clang! Clash!
The unfortunate bodyguards, compelled by their mastersâ orders, clashed swords with each other.
âA fight! Thereâs a fight!â
Naturally, people couldnât resist the temptation of such an entertaining spectacle.
Even those who had no intention of buying cosmetics gathered in front of the mansion to watch the brawl.
âS-sir, thereâs a serious problem. The front of the mansion is in utter chaos. Thereâs no way to let people in. If this keeps up, it could turn into a riot.â
Claude urgently reported to Ghislain, who quickly went outside to see for himself.
âHuh... This wasnât part of the plan.â
The entrance to the mansion was pure pandemonium.
People fighting, people watching, even stray dogs from the neighborhood that had followed the crowdâit was complete chaos. Not even a battlefield would be this disorderly.
âPlease, move aside! Donât block the way!â
âI was here first! Hey, donât push!â
Woof woof! Bark bark!
âHey! Someone make those dogs stop barking!â
Watching the scene, Ghislain let out a wry laugh, almost in admiration.
âWow, this really is a mess.â
Claude, looking utterly drained, grumbled.
âWeâve closed the gate for now because everyoneâs trying to push their way in. If we open it, the mansion will be overrun by those people. Theyâll probably just take the cosmetics, too. So, what do we do now?â
âHmm...â
Ghislain found the situation quite tricky to handle. He couldnât just go around beating everyone up, even if it was his usual approach.
âAh, I need to return to the estate.â
When Ghislain muttered this, Claude gave him an incredulous look.
âIn this state? If you go back now, the entire mansion will be looted. The servants wonât be able to stop it.â
âThen what should I do?â
âYou need to stay and manage things somehow.â
âAh, I need to go back quickly.â
âYouâre not making any sense. We canât handle this right now. Do you think the servants can hold out?â
Ghislain hesitated for a moment before speaking.
âIf we canât handle it, we need to leave it to someone who can.â
âWhat?â
âFor now, letâs close up shop.â
âWhat do you mean...?â
Before Claude could finish his sentence, Ghislain leaped up onto one of the mansionâs walls and shouted loudly.
âWeâre suspending sales for now! Everyone, go home! Weâll reopen in a few days!â
The gathered nobles began to shout in protest.
âWhat do you mean? Weâve been waiting since morning! We must buy it today!â
âBaron Fenris! Itâs me! Me! We met at the banquet, remember?â
âBaron Fenris! You canât do this! At least let our group buy first!â
With Ghislainâs appearance, the commotion only intensified.
Despite the noblesâ protests, Ghislain didnât even blink as he shouted again.
âHey! Block the main gate completely! Weâre closing up for today!â
Claude and the other aides exchanged bewildered glances.
Things were going exceptionally well, and there was no telling what rumors would spread if they drove away all these customers.
âUm, my lord... No matter how bad it is, you canât just turn away so many customers...â
Claude carefully tried to speak up, but Ghislain interrupted him in an irritated tone.
âWhat are you doing? Hurry up and block the gates.â
âAh, whatâs gotten into him this time?â
Claude grumbled inwardly as he ordered the mercenaries to act.
Just in case of a disturbance, they used wooden planks and carts, which had been prepared earlier, to thoroughly block off the entrance to the mansion.
Thud! Thud!
With the iron bars of the main gate completely covered, it was impossible to see inside, and the nobles began shouting angrily.
âThis is an insult to us!â
âWhy arenât you selling?â
âOpen the gates now! I need to have a word with you!â
But there was no response from behind the blocked gate.
