chapter nineteen

Alex had always felt weak under Stefans touch. she gave into him every single time. he was gentle, warm, and undeniably irresistible. every time his fingers grazed her arm or neck she practically melted into him; letting go of everything and just feeling numb.

and right now was no different.

one of his hands rested in the nape of her neck right below her jaw, and that single act alone was what let her bring down her defenses and fall into him.

"I don't want Rebekah or Elena... I only want you." he spoke. his thumb gently grazing her bottom lip, "it's always been you"

Alex knew that if she believed his confession that things would change. they're on opposite sides of the war for this cure. her family wouldn't be happy if she got back together with him, not after all the pain they put each other through.

but seeing his bright eyes so close to her again, the sound of his voice, his touch, she was blinded by her love for him that nothing else mattered to her.

yet even then, that small part of her brain, the part that held her doubts, wondered if everything was saying was true. that everything he says he feels for her is real.

Stefan's hand stayed in place as he whispered softly, "we can go back to how things were before; but this time we won't have to hide. no more secrets, no more mortality to keep us apart"

"what if I want the cure? If I take it i'll be human, my enemies will know in due time and come for me. everyone in this town will be in danger, and my siblings will only want to keep me alive"

"i'll get it for you and Elena"

that sentence alone told Alex everything she needed to know. Stefan still cared enough for Elena to risk everything for her. back in 1864 he would pick Katherine over her, and now he would pick Elena. it doesn't matter if she wants the cure, as long as Elena could get it too he would trust her with the headstone and believe she was on their side.

Alex scoffed, pulling back from his touch, "of course, it's still all about that damn face. what so special about those doppelgängers? you know what... i don't care anymore. I don't have your little headstone anymore, and I don't need it. I have a more reliable source than your little group. and my party actually cares about me. they don't use my love for them to their advantage"

"I do care about you Alex. why else would i be here now? why would I keep coming back to you and confess to you if I didn't feel something for you?"

Alex pressed her lips together in frustration. she didn't know if she could actually believe him while they're on this hunt for the cure. he only cares if Elena gets to be human again, but he tells her he wants her and not Elena.

"if you want the headstone I gave it back to Rebekah. you can tell her all the things you told me and see if she falls for you or not. she probably will though, I have more self restraint than my sister"

Stefan takes a deep breath and nods. he knows that Alex won't trust his word right now. but once they find the cure he'll try again. he'll get her to see that he's not in love with Elena anymore.

Alex kept a low radar the following day. her current source for information on the cure, a little wolf girl that used to be aquatinted with Tyler, had given her a solid lead. along with the information she had gathered from the people in Mystic Falls, she was ready to find that cure on her own. well, she wouldn't entirely be on her own. a little run away companion would be with her.

she couldn't wait to get her hands on that cure. the cure for all the torment she had been through for a thousand years. not only would this cure end the immortality spell placed upon her, but it will erase her vampire side as well. she could finally die. she could finally be reunited with her two brothers, her father, her mother. she could finally rest, even if it was without Stefan.

instead of going home to her apartment after meeting with her source, she headed to her family's mansion to visit her brother and sister before she departed for her journey.

when she arrived the house was quiet, which was quite strange considering her brother Niklaus was usually causing a ruckus over anything and everything.

"Niklaus? are you here, brother?" she called out. she was answered with more silence. until the sound of glass breaking lead her towards the dining room.

glass and liquor littered the floor. Rebekah was in front of it. hovering above the table where the drinking glasses and various liquors sat. Alex heard her sniffle, and she knew that she had been crying.

"Rebekah? where is Niklaus?"

startled, Rebekah turned towards her sister and put on a smile, "apologies, Aleksandra. I didn't mean to cause a scare"

Alex watched as her older sister tried to pick up the pieces of glass on her own, "Bex, you're gonna cut your hand if you do that"

just then Rebekah had cut her hand open. the blonde started to laugh at herself for being careless, but her laughter turned into sorrow as she began to cry. Alex knelt beside her sister on the ground and wrapped her arms over her shoulders.

"what happened? did Stefan break your heart again? he's known for doing that around here"

Rebekah let out a breathy laugh after hearing her baby sister try to lighten the mood. but she knew that Alex would be in much worse condition when she told her what happened mere moments ago.

"it's not that... it's Kol"

"did our brother start a war again? I've told him before that his intimidating charm is more threatening than swoon worthy, witches don't always fall for it-"

"-he's dead, Alex"

Alex blinked, "so Niklaus dagger-ed him again? well that's nothing new. tell me where he is and i'll take it out, it's not a big deal"

Rebekah turned around to face her sister, her face soaked with tears, "it wasn't Niklaus, Aleksandra. it was Elena and her brother. they had the white oak stake. they killed Kol just like they killed Finn"

Alex froze, a bone freezing chill ran throughout her body. there was no possible way that Kol was dead. he wouldn't be so careless as to let a newbie vampire and newbie vampire hunter kill him. he had to be alive. he has to be alive.

without uttering a word she sped out of the house, leaving her sister in a mess of her tears alone. Alex ran as fast as she could with her enhanced speed towards the place Kol last was. he's here. i'll get there and he'll be alive and well. the Gilbert's will be the ones dead. not him.

"Kol!" she shouted, running to the door. she was stoped at the entrance by the vampire barrier. she hadn't been invited in by Jeremy. though that didn't matter to her. what mattered was the burnt body laying in the kitchen. the body of her brother Kol.

Klaus turned from his magically sealed spot in the living room and he could feel his cold heart breaking when seeing the look on his littlest sisters face.

"Aleksandra... don't-don't look. just look away from it. you don't need to see him like that," he practically begged. his eyes were soft and his mouth hung open in surprise that she was here. he knew the bond she and Kol had, they were best friends. he was the only one who could save her every time she fell off the wagon. and now he was gone.

"no...it's not real...that's not him!" Alex cried out. with tears falling down her face she fell down onto her hands and knees, "it's not real...he's okay. he'll heal and wake up soon. he-"

she stopped mid sentence when something shiny caught her eye. a ring laid beside the burnt body. it was Kol's daylight ring. it all suddenly came crashing down on her. it was really her brother laying dead on the floor. her best friend. he was gone, just like Finn. struck by the white oak stake meant to kill her family.

Elena and her friends may have won this battle, but Alex would sure as hell win the war. she would get the cure before them. she would take it right from under them. she would watch them suffer as she took what they wanted.

her urge to kill was strong, and her urge for justice was just as strong. Alex knew what she had to do in order to win.

"i'll make sure they pay, Niklaus. and I know just how to do it"

++++++++++++++++++

Alex checked her GPS tracker once again as she hiked up the trail on the abandoned island. she had slipped another one into Rebekah's backpack before she had left.  "they're almost here. we need to hurry up and get inside the cave before they see us"

"why didn't you join the blondie and her new pals? you'd get to be with Stefan and torture Elena all you want," her hooded companion snickered.

Alex stopped to look at them, "Elena and her hunter brother killed Kol and Stefan happened to be apart of the plan... if much rather torture her by killing her brother"

"blood must have blood," the dark haired companion smirked, "much better saying than 'an eye for an eye'. it's more fun and gruesome"

"Kol deserves justice for what they did to him. they only care about themselves..." Alex grinned as they reached the entrance to the cave where Silas was buried, "it's time I do the same and take what's rightfully mine, don't you think? this cure was meant to reverse my immortality spell after all"

Alex's companion removed their hood, and a familiar doppelgänger face appeared in her line of sight, "so... ready to show off our famous Petrova-Mikaelson destruction combo?"

the heretic hid in the shadows as she watched Katherine pretend to be to be Elena for Jeremy and Bonnie. the witch and hunter duo had led them right to a fossilized Silas. and all they had to do to get the cure was to feed him human blood and wake him up.

"you have to help Bonnie. the hunter stabbed her,  you have to feed her," Jeremy said, kneeling in front of the injured witch who had been stabbed by another hunter looking for the cure.

"okay, but I just need to make sure you're okay first" Katherine posing as Elena urged.

"i'm fine. what are you doing?"

"the cure! Jeremy, after everything we've been through, it's right there,"

"it'll be there after we help Bonnie"

Katherine rolled her eyes at his stubbornness, "God, I forgot what a brat you were. i'm done playing nice"

she immediately grabbed his arm, cutting his wrist and taking him to where Silas laid. letting his blood be what feeds the fossilized immortal. Jeremy tried to break from her grasp but her grip and added vampire strength was too strong for him.

"sorry, family reunion is going to be cut short," Katherine shoved him away, leading him right into Alex's arms.

"hello, little Gilbert," Alex grinned before biting down onto his neck, having herself a little taste of his blood before pressing his open neck down onto Silas, "and goodbye"

she held onto his neck until Silas' arm broke free and held Jeremy tight for her. Katherine then grabbed the box containing the cure and sped off. Alex stayed, turning her head to see Bonnie laying in shock. the sound of something snapping made them both turn their attention back to Jeremy and Silas. Jeremy fell to the ground, his neck broke.

Alex hummed in satisfaction and looked back at Bonnie, "well that's over. I win"
