chapter twenty-two
"you're out of your damn mind, Katherine," Alex scoffed into the phone as she drove to the Salvatore home, "that spell is dangerous, it's dark magic"
"you don't have to be there, Alex. just imagine how easy it'll be for us. we can travel the world for eternity, be free, just the two of us again like old times"
the only tie Katherine has to life, to her humanity, is Alex. she's been a constant for five hundred years, the only person she can trust with her life. the chance to live eternally like her, to be with her sister forever, is something Katherine would be a fool to deny.
Alex sighed. of course she wants Katherine to stay with her forever, and that's harder knowing that she can be killed easier than she and her blood siblings, but the immortality spell isn't something to take lightly.
"we'll talk about this tomorrow, don't do anything stupid"
Katherine giggled, "I can't make any promises!" and then ended the call.
it was perfect timing. the call ended just has Alex arrived at her destination, her home for the time being. she still has her apartment, but staying with the Salvatore brothers was much more entertaining, especially since she got a free show of watching them torture Elena till she got her humanity back.
Alex could hear their three voices as soon as she exited her car, and she decided to eavesdrop on their conversation before it would end when she would walk in.
"it all comes down to her, to Katherine. okay? Stefan said to focus on one thing, so I did, I focused on hate, and I hate her so much"
Alex heard Elena's voice, her tone dripping with anger, and inched closer to the door.
"I don't think that's what he meant" Damon spoke.
"Elena, Katherine is not worth your time. if you spend ten minutes of your life hating her, she wins"
she agreed with Stefan, simply hating Katherine was pointless. only a few people could get under her skin like that and win, and Elena certainly wasn't one of them.
"not if I kill her"
Alex froze. was Elena out of her mind? there's no way in hell she could kill Katherine.
"there's no way in hell you can kill Katherine," Damon said, saying exactly what Alex was thinking, "you'd have to get through Alex first, and she can't be killed"
"I know, she's immortal, but there's a cure for it. if I can use it on her, then kill her, I can kill Katherine too. both of our remaining problems will be gone"
"absolutely not!" Alex hears Stefan yell, "I don't care about the grudge you have against Katherine, but you're not touching Alex"
Alex smiles a bit at Stefan's words. he's defending her against Elena. it's proof that his love for her overshadows what he has, or really had, with Elena.
"come on, Stefan, Alex has been causing us problems since she arrived! she's a Mikaelson and Katherine's best friend, so you really think she won't turn her back on us for them? tune her back on you the second they need her?"
Alex reached for the door handle to barge in and give Elena a piece of her mind, but she stopped when she heard Damon's voice.
"I'm sorry Elena but i'm with Stefan on this. Alex may not be important to you but she's important to us. she's off limits. if she were here right now hearing this you would already be dead. we're not going to risk either of you dying"
my boys know me well. Alex thought to herself with a smirk. the only reason she hadn't gone in there and killed Elena was because of the Salvatore brothers. they both care for her, Damon loves her, and she won't cause another reason for them to hate her.
"you're both going to defend her over me?"
that was Alex's last straw. she opened the door immediately and slammed it closed, making sure they all knew she was back, and made her way to the parlor where they all were.
"you really are dumb, Elena," she made her way to the table behind them and poured herself a drink, "very rookie vampire if you to think that you can kill Katherine and I so easily"
Elena gave her a glare, "I killed two of your brothers, both Original's"
"not by yourself though, darling. the Salvatore's clearly won't help you this time, and though my sister is infatuated with your human friend, she won't help you either. Caroline and Bonnie can't do much damage, so fighting us is a death sentence for you all. you wouldn't risk your friends getting hurt, would you?"
"we're done talking about this," Damon stands up and takes Elena's arm, "let's go"

the following day, Katherine ignored all of Alex's calls. the heretic found it strange, Katherine never ignored her calls unless something was wrong. and so she tracked her down.
she started her tracking as the sun was setting. Damon and Stefan were called by the Sheriff for a problem at the hospital, so she had some time to herself to find her friend. as time passed, the wind started to pick up, and Alex felt a strange source of energy. call it witch's tuition, but Alex ended up at the high school.
she entered the dark school using her phone as a flashlight. the power was out all over town. whatever the energy was started the wind and caused the power outage. she started heading directly to the source, walking down the halls, when she saw a figure in the shadows.
she stopped in place. it was a man. their outline was so familiar, she knew who it was, but it was impossible.
"Finn?" Alex questioned in surprise. there's no way she was seeing him. she had to have been hallucinating.
"my dear Aleksandra..." her brother Finn emerged from the shadows, a gleam in his eyes as he saw his youngest sister again, "I've missed you"
Alex ran to her brother, wrapping her arms around his neck as she hugged him as tight as she could, "how are you here? you're dead...I don't understand..."
tears fell down her face as she cried out in joy. her eldest brother was back. he was in front of her, she was hugging him again. if this was all a dream, it was perfect.
Finn hugged his sister back, holding her just as close, "the Bennett witch lowered the veil to the other side. I' not here forever, but I wanted to see you again, to apologize"
Alex pulls away from the hug but continues to hold onto her brothers, "don't apologize, brother, I understand. i'm sorry to you for not being able to save you"
"dying was my salvation, you know this"
Alex indeed did know that Finn wanted nothing more than to die, but it still pained her to know it. he hates what they are and would have rather died than live this life.
"but..." Finn continues, "I made a mistake on the other side, not knowing this day would come where the dead could mingle with the living again"
she shook her head, "it's fine, Finn. whatever it is you can tell me and then perhaps you can find peace"
Finn takes her hands, "i'm serious, Alek, there are dead souls here that want the opposite of a family reunion"
"so you're saying that someone's coming after me?"
Finn nods, "our ancestors are not happy you're still alive, especially with the power you have. Niklaus may not have told you this, but there is one thing in this world that can kill you, and because of me, they know where it is"
Alex shivered at his words. the same people who tried to kill her many times before in her life are back, and there's a possibility they may succeed this time.
"well, where is it? what is it?"
"it's the golden dagger. its-"
"-that's here! it's here in Mystic Falls!" she backed away from her brother and attempted to calm her breathing, but her nerves where skyrocketing, "Finn, we cannot let them get that dagger"
this time her brother initiated the hug, "I know, but it's too late. they're coming...you have to run, far away from Mystic Falls. we cannot leave the border, but you can"
Alex makes no motion to move, instead she clutches onto her brothers shirt. "no, I can't run again. I won't leave Stefan again, please, you can help me stop them! and-and if you're here that means Kol is somewhere too!"
Alex had lived a thousand years, and in that time she leaned to limit her fear...but if there was one thing she would always fear, it's her ancestors. they've done horrible things to her, controlled her to do atrocious things, and now they actually have a shot at killing her.
"please, Aleksandra, there is nothing more I want than for you to be with us, but I know you want to live. you deserve to live more than the rest of us, so please...go before it's too late"
Alex nodded rapidly and wiped her tears, "I love you Finn, make sure Kol knows too"
"I will," he kissed the top of his youngest sisters forehead, "run"
she did just that. she turned back and ran through the school with her heightened speed. she knew she should leave Mystic Falls as soon as possible, but before she made it out of the school she was met with someone else.
"there you are" a witch dressed in 5th century clothing shouted from across the hall.
Alex turned around and was met with more witches. they found her.
she clutched her head as the piercing sound and pain echoed through her. she fell to her knees and the witches surrounded her at a closer distance. one of them, one who had helped her mother put her to sleep all those years ago, held the gold dagger in their hand.
she tried to reach forward to grab one of them, but their power was strong, and pulled her hands back and forced them to her sides. she couldn't move, and because of the spell they were using, it forced her lips closed as well. every part of her was pulled closed and tight to her body.
"we've waited for this day for a thousand years, none of your tricks will save you this time" one said.
they all inched closer to her, the one with the dagger stood directly in front of her.
"it's time to put your down for good, Aleksandra Mikaelson"
every part of her body screamed for her to move, but it was no use. the second the dagger broke skin she screamed through her glued shut mouth. even if someone was here and could save her, her scream was muffled, too quiet to be heard from far away.
the dagger sunk deeper and deeper into her, with every passing moment she could feel her body go numb and her life slip away. this wasn't like any of her temporary deaths, this one hurt like hell. it felt as if the dagger was lit on fire inside of her, covered in thorns, and covered in lethal poison.
the witch let go of the dagger and then spell that bound her body broke. she let out a gasp as her body fell limp. there was nothing she could do to stop this. the affects of the dagger were fast and taking a heavy toll on her body.
"ALEX!"
she heard Stefan first, then blinked slowly and saw him run towards her from between the bodies of the witches.
she let in a deep breath to call for him, to tell him one last time that she loved him, but everything froze. she couldn't move, she couldn't speak, breathe, or hear.
her vision clouded as Stefan broke through the circle of witches, and it all went black as he knelt in front of her.
