Chapter 17

Sharkgator1,018 words~6 min read

I couldn't stay at the window and watch helplessly as the sharkgator continue to pull the helicopter. I had to figure out a way to help him and fast!

I moved away from the window and looked around the cabin for anything that could help me. I spotted a closet door and walked over to it and swung it open. When I looked inside, I breathe a sigh of relief. Hanging on the wall in a glass case was a rifle. I knew it couldn't do anything to the sharkgator, but it will be able to buy Brian more time to get out of the helicopter.

I took up a broken, wooden chair that was inside the closet and used it to break the glass. The glass broke in one hit and I covered my face as the broken pieces fly everywhere. I grabbed the rifle from off its hook quickly and checked to see if it was loaded. After I saw that it was, I slung the strap of the rifle over my shoulder and moved off.

"Allison, What are you doing?" Kate asked, as I walked passed her to the front door.

"I'm going to distract it." I answered.

"What? Ali, No! You can't do that! That is useless against the sharkgator." Kate said, shaking her head profusely. "And besides do you know how to use a gun?"

"No, but I'm sure as hell going to try." I said determinedly. Without saying anything else, I swung the door open and ran out.

As soon as I reached close to the helicopter, I got into action. I took the rifle from my shoulders and began to shoot at the sharkgator, who was still pulling the helicopter into the water. Most of the shots missed and hit the water or the ground, but I continued to fire at it. A few shots hit him, but it didn't faze him at all as he still clutched the tail of the helicopter into its mouth.

After the fifth bullet hit it, the sharkgator pulled back, releasing the aircraft. Another shot hit him and he went underwater to avoid the bullets.

"Brian! Get out, now!" I shouted at Brian in the helicopter. Even though I had stopped shooting at the sharkgator, I didn't look in Brian's direction. I didn't dare to take my eyes from the sharkgator in the water, in case he decides to reappear.

From the corner of my eye, I saw the door of the helicopter swung open and Brian stepped down into the water. The plane had only made it to the low part of the water, so Brian was only ankle deep in. He was jogging quickly towards me when the sharkgator resurfaced and started for Brian's direction.

I held up the rifle again and shot at the sharkgator twice. The creature was in a better angle this time, so both bullets hit him. The sting of the bullet on its face and body cause the sharkgator to shrunk back. By this time, Brian had reached my side.

"Come on, let's go." He said to me.

I nodded my head and began to walk back ways to the cabin. I didn't want to take my eyes of the sharkgator. As soon as we started to move, it started to move again. I sent out two more shots and it shrunk back again. We continued to move and soon we were a few distance away from the cabin. I shot at the sharkgator again and I heard a clicking sound. The bullets were finish!

Brian brought his mouth close to my ear. "I think this is a good time for us to run." He whispered.

"I think so too." As soon as the words left my mouth, we both turned and made a dash for the cabin. We didn't once look behind us, but we knew it was after us. It's a good thing we had a few feet head start because we wouldn't have made it. Brian and I finally reached the porch steps and we ran to the open door and closed it quickly behind us.

I took a few seconds leaning on the door to catch my breath before I moved to sit on the couch. When I sat down, Tamika came beside me and gave me a look.

"I can't believe you did that." She said.

"I can't believe I did that either." I replied honestly.

She smiled, then leaned towards me to give me a hug. "Well, I'm just glad you are okay." She patted me on the back then pulled away.

Mr. Ragland turned his attention to Brian, who stood leaning against the window. "Did you found the transceiver?"

Brian nodded his head. "Yeah, but the connection was bad. Too much static. The person on the other end was having trouble hearing what I was saying. I still told them everything. I just hope they heard."

"Did you get a response from them?" Patrice asked.

Brian shook his head. "No, I didn't. By the time I was finished talking, the sharkgator started pulling on the helicopter and the connection was cut."

"Well, I do hope they got the message." I said.

"Me too." Kate replied.

We all sat in silence and a full minute has passed before Patrice spoke again. "So what do we do now?"

Brian turned his attention to all of us. I could tell he was trying to remain hopeful. "There is nothing more we can do. Now, we wait."
